Celebrating Lughnassadh with Cornelia Amiri and Her Newest Release The Queen of Kings

I write Celtic/Romance novels so along with my brand new release, Queen of Kings, I wanted to write about the current Celtic holiday, Lughnassadh, pronounced Loo-nahs-ah, it is the Celtic Harvest festival, celebrated July 31 or August 1st.

Queen of Kings is set in Bronze Age Ireland. It is the story of Macha of the Red Braids, who is as wild, strong, and as beautiful as the land she rules. All men lust for her, warriors and kings bow to her might and magic, but one champion comes forth to gift her with a white bull and true love. And Queen of Kings begins at a Lughnassadh celebration, when the child Macha marches into the hall with her father and his men.

Men, women, and children in woolen tunics and plaid cloaks sat with legs crossed on soft wolf, deer, and fox pelts while they gazed at Aed, their king. He marched into the hall, tall and as straight as a spruce tree. His bulging, muscular arms and legs glistened from leek oil. Sporting a long, bushy moustache as red as a sundew flower, hair of the same striking hue hanging to his shoulders, and a shiny receding forehead, King Aed lifted his chin and led in his finest warriors to the rousing beat of the bodhran drum. His strongest champion and his seven best spearmen, along with his swiftest charioteers, marched in formation. A small redheaded girl with her hands planted on her hips pranced with quick, well-practiced steps in the center of this parade, with the full aplomb of her father, the king. For such a small child, Aed’s only heir didn’t seem tiny at all. She seemed larger than life.

Games, horse racing, and chariot racing were a big part of the Lughnassadh celebration. And in Queen of kings, when Macha is seven years older than in the above excerpt, she beats all the boys in the Lughnsassadh chariot races.

The druid stood smiling from the contagious zeal and energy of the young girl bounding toward him. Her flame-red braids waved in the wind with her springy gait. Her budding breasts bounced beneath the blue woolen tunic dress and the plaid cloak pinned over it. Her sweet adolescent face beamed with a bright smile as she called out in a tone breathy from running, “Druid Lasair, I beat all the boys my age.”

But before he could reply, a young warrior, his dark hair stiff and spiked like the mane on a racing horse, called out, “Congratulations, Macha. You drive a chariot almost as well as a boy does.”

She came to an abrupt halt and wheeled around to the young warrior. Macha’s anger crackled in the air around her, and her blue eyes blazed with fury. “I raced better than anyone.” She stepped so close to him her breath could be felt on his face. “And how fast or how well someone does something has nothing to do with their sex.” Her eyes gleamed with mischief. “Here, I’ll show you,” Macha said in a honeyed tone. She drew her arm back and swung with all her might, ramming her fist into his jaw. He dropped to the ground. As he lay in the dirt, gazing up at her with a groggy expression on his face, she said, “You see, even though you are a boy, you fell to the ground just as any girl would have. Even though I’m a girl, I put you there just like any boy could have.”

This Celtic fire festival is named after the sun god Lugh, a tall, muscular warrior with sky blue eyes and a hallo of golden light which blazed around his thick flaxen hair. He was also known as Lugh of the long arm because of his magic spear, which never missed its mark. The Irish earth goddess of Lughnassadh is Tailtiu.

The origin of Lughnassadh begin with a forbidden love between Cian, a Tuatha De Dannan and Eithne, a Fomorian. Eithne's father locked her in a high tower. With the help of a druidess, Cian flew on a cloud to the tower and climbed in Eithne'swindow. Nine months later they had twin boys. Eithne's father threw the babies into the sea to waylay the chief druid's prophecy that his grandson would defeat him in battle. Though one baby drowned, the other swam away. The sea god, Mannanann MacLir, found the babe and gave him to a warrior woman, Tailtiu, pronounced tell-shuh.

After Tailtiu taught him everything she knew, the boy, Lugh, went to Tara, the hill fort of the Tuatha De Dannan. The porter asked him what skills he had to offer. When he said he was a warrior the gatekeeper told him they already had warriors. Lugh continued, saying he was a healer, then a smith, and so on. Each time, the porter said they had someone with that skill. Finally Lugh told him if they already had one person who could do all those things, he would leave.

The gatekeeper let him in and Lugh became King of Tara for a year and a day.Leading the Tuatha De Dannan in battle against the Fomorians, Lugh struck the Fomorian's evil eye with his slingshot. When the rock hit the evil eye, it looked at Lugh's grandfather, Baylor. As the evil eye killed all within its sight, Baylor died instantly. Thus the Fomorians were defeated. But Lugh's foster mother, and a royal lady of the Fir Bolog, Tailtiu, had to clear a vast forest to plant grain for her people. She died from the strain and exhaustion. Lugh ordered a fair, with feasting and funeral games, be held each first harvest, in her honor, the Lughnassadh.

As Lughnassadh celebrates the marriage of the earth to the sky, hand fasting marriages were celebrated at this time. Single men lined up on one side and unmarried women on the other. They paired off and married for a year and a day. The couple had to return to the same place the following year to make their marriage permanent. They could also divorce the following year at the festival by simply standing back to back, facing north and south, and walking out. Going their separate ways. Single once more.

An important part of Lughnassadh was the harvest of corn, wheat, oats, and barley, as well as fruits like berries and grapes. A loaf of bread made from the new corn was dedicated to the goddess. The tribe's chieftain or druid may have taken loaves of fresh baked bread, broke off pieces, and handed them to each member of the tribe as they walked sun wise around a large bon fire.

Fruit gathering was also part Lughnassadh. Young men and women paired off to pick bilberries and didn't return until nightfall. The boys thread berries into bracelets for the girls. Before going home, the girls took off their bracelets and left them on the hillside. After climbing back down the hill the young men participated in games such as horse racing.

The White Stead is a common companion of Lugh. The horse is the embodiment of the Goddess of Sovereignty who delivered spirits to Otherworld. In the coastal lands, people drove horses down to the beach and into the sea on Lughnasadh.

To celebrate Lughnassadh at your home, make a centerpiece of dried wheat sheaves, whole grain breads, acorns, hazel nuts, and grapes. Get the whole family involved in baking homemade bread. Say a prayer, thanking god for the harvest or the bounty of food you have year round. Share your Celtic heritage with others at the table by telling them the story of Lugh or Llew.

And read a copy of Queen of Kings or at least an excerpt:

“You may be his heir, but you are still only a woman.” Cimbaeth sneered. “Leave us, Macha of the Red Tresses. Dithorba and I rule Ulster now.”

“Who are you to order me about? Take heed, my kings, for once sworn to rule as a triad, you cannot cast your pledge aside. My father passed through the oaken door to the Otherworld, but I am here.” Grabbing the thick gold band around her neck, she tugged on it. “I wear his torque and claim his throne as my sacred right.” She pivoted toward them, her arm outstretched and the fingers of her hand curled back except for one long digit, its claw like nail pointing at them. “You deny me the crown in my sire’s stead, but it is not in your power to do so. Fate deems I shall rule Erinn.” Her heart pounded. “You cannot stop me.” She flung her arms into the air in a stirring motion, brewing trouble. Anger pounded in her. She wanted to leave at once, and wings were faster than legs.

As Dithorba began to speak, a cold gust swirled inside the hill fort, blasting his hair across his face and rendering him silent.

Macha let out a cackle. “Crow goddess, my patron, great Morrigan, I summon flight from my foes.” She threw her head back. “I shall return to feed on them, as is my due.” Fiery heat blazed through her skin, tingling with magical energy. Twirling a bright auburn braid with her fingers, she transformed it to a midnight hue. All form and texture changed before her. She ruffled the soft feathers cresting her head; they were so dark and beautiful.

Macha watched Cimbaeth’s eyes grow wide in shock. Dithorba gasped.

A shivery thrill spiraled through her. Now that they knew of her magic, the kings would fear what else she might do. She let out a raspy cackle. Clenching her teeth, moaning, the prickling sensation grew to a piercing pain. Quivering, feathers sprouted out of her flesh. Skin and bones stretching, twisting, leaving her small, compressed. Her teeth and tongue vanished. Snapping her beak open, she cawed at the two kings, whose faces grew ashen.

Shaky, she flapped her large wings, fighting to gain balance on short, thin legs with claws where feet had been. Her heart hammered faster than any human’s. Beating her wings hard—more rapidly than arms could move—she bobbed up and down until she soared off the ground. She was free once again. Blessing the dark goddess, Macha swooped down at the two kings, who ducked. Circling them seven times, her croaks pierced the air. She throbbed with breathless pleasure, feeding off the fright glistening in their eyes. Cawing loudly and flapping with all her might, she—now a crow—flew away from the cowering kings.

Get Your Vampire Fix

VampChix has a new post detailing some of the upcoming vampire movies scheduled to hit a screen near you.

VampChix contributor Catherine Karp has an even more extensive list at her site Suburban Vampire.

And Marta Acosta's Vampire Wire has new vampire releases, news and links to vampire articles including clueless writers posting vampire hawt lists. Some people are just cashing in on vampire popularity and have no idea who the hawtest vamps of all time are. In case you missed it Marta ran a poll getting readers to weigh in on their most favorite vampires and who is the hawtest vampire of all.

The winner of the international Ultimate Hawt Vampire Poll, was Henry Fitzroy, played by Kyle Schmid. I totally agree. He played the sexy vampire perfectly. Not too cheesy, not full of angst just pure sex appeal. Yum.

If you need more to get your vampire fix then make sure to drop by Vampire Film Festival for everything vampire movies, shows and more.

Monday Musings- Being Human

Did anyone catch the new paranormal show on BBC America Saturday night?

Being Human casts a vampire, a werewolf and the ghost of human as flat mates. I watched it, twice. Not sure if I am enamored of it yet.

I am kinda tired of characters that sit around and bitch and moan about what monsters they are. The werewolf is a wimp and the vampire is not into being a vampire. Of course they make the "others" of their kind actual monsters. The werewolves are mindless killers and the vampires...devious killers that turn too many of their victims to vamps.

That's another problem I have. I hate when vampires "have" to kill to feed, totally unnecessary and I hate it when the mythology is that everyone who gets bit turns into a vampire. Seriously if vampirism spread through just one bite the whole world would quickly be overpopulated with vamps. That's like if every time a human took a bite of food they conceived. Totally unrealistic.

I suppose there are special circumstances but sometimes the general mythology is being bit equals turning into a vampire. I don't generally like that. I believe being changed into a vampire should be a little more complex than that. I guess on Being Human they do have to share blood but they minimized the importance of this. They totally simplified the experience.

Anyway, I'll keep watching Being Human to see how the show evolves, it does look like it might get interesting. Plus the vampire is a hottie.

I also watched the season finale of Primeval. I wonder if that's the end. I heard it was getting bad reviews and not very good ratings plus so many main characters left. That I didn't like. I was just getting into the show then they started killing everyone off.

BBC shows don't seem to keep the steam going. Robin Hood (which actually looks like it is coming back for a third season), Primeval...they all start out interesting then go downhill. I never did watch Hex since I didn't catch it from the beginning. I think I'll get the show on DVD and give it a try.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday

So in my announcements the other day I forgot to mention I am going to be blogging on VampChix at least once a month. This is a new site devoted to everything vampire, especially vampire books and authors.

My first post at VampChix will be Friday July 31, make sure you stop by to check it out.

Onto other things...I started reading The Devil Inside by Jenna Black last night...WOW! Holy hell on wheels that book sucked me in. Before I knew it it was 4:30 in the morning and I was on Chapter 17. Jenna Black has sucked me right into her world and I am itching to get back to that book and the rest in the series.

I have the first three books in the Morgan Kingsley series: The Devil Inside, The Devil You Know, and The Devil's Due. The fourth book comes out this week, Speak of the Devil and I am hoping to snag a copy soon.

So far this series is phenomenal. The characters are wild, the plot is mysterious and the whole world building is complex and complete. I am loving it. Urban fantasy with legal demons and demon hosts and crazy fanatics...OK I am not even done with the book so I am not going into full review mode but I am just loving this book. It's a book that will literally pull you in and not let you go until the book is finished.

I have to stop now or I'll write too much.

I have another book in my to read pile that I've been waiting for: Where There's a Witch by Madelyn Alt, the 5th book in The Bewitching Mysteries. I wonder what will happen with Maggie this time and will she ever hook up with the right guy?

I just received it from the library and am dying to read it but I have to finish this Jenna Black book first since it grabbed me out of nowhere and hooked me into a world full of demons.

Another book I've been waiting for comes out this week: Jeaniene Frost's Destined for an Early Grave the 4th book in The Night Huntress series. I've been waiting for this one for awhile.

I tried to get Jeaniene on Fang-tastic Books but she's currently too busy, she was over at Bitten by Books doing a giveaway though. I entered, would love to win but...I'll probably just have to buy the book. Maybe she'll drop by FB in the future.

Some authors don't have time or get booked way in advance for even their web appearances. I tried to get Yasmine Galenorn too but she was also completely booked. Too bad. Maybe in the future I can get some more awesome authors to drop by and join us.

Barbara Bretton, Susan Squires, Kimberly Frost, and Michelle Rowen will be here at FB soon and they are all fang-tastic authors. I can't wait. Once summer is over more authors will probably start booking appearances again.

OK, I've rambled. Now I am off to write something other than book stuff, well other author's book stuff. :-)

Until next time, happy reading.

A Review of The Highwayman by Michele Hauf

Four Fangs for The Highwayman by Michele Hauf

I've heard nothing but good things about Michele Hauf's books so I had to read one. I'm sure I have probably read others as well, I need to go through my romance gallery you would be amazed at how many authors I stumble across that I read ages ago that I now chat with or adore their new works.

Anyway back to Michele Hauf's The Highwayman. This is the first book of her new Wicked Games series and occurs in the same world as her Bewitching the Dark series.

Max Fitzroy is a lonley man that hasn't eaten, slept or been able to experience complete pleasure in 250 years. That's got to make a man a little cranky. In life he was a thief, a Highwayman. Now that he's immortal he is still The Highwayman but what he seeks now is demons...and the famaliars that bridge them to this world.

He seeks out Aby, the familiar rumored to be the best, the one he thinks can finally rid him of the demon shadow inside him the one that has made the last 250 years hell on earth. His plan is to find her, have sex with her, then kill her. Hah! Instead she entrances him. Everyday he is more fascinated by her that killing her becomes the last thing on his mind.

Can she rid him of the demon so he can live a normal life? Will she be the woman who can finally fulfil his desire? Or will evil forces come between them and make sure they don't have happily ever after?

I really enjoyed this book. Michele has done a great job with her world building. I have to go back and read her other series to get a solid feel for this world because this book did leave a few questions in my mind like: When familiars die and are reborn are they born back to the same body right where they left off just with no memory? If not, what good is the tattoo?

And what is up with Severo and Grim? I really hope to see more of the werewolf (his story is next) the witch, Grim (or was it Grimm), I can do without. There is something sneaky and sinister about that man. I do want to read MOON KISSED which is supposed to be out in September.

The Highwayman is a gripping romance novel full of everything you could want in a paranormal: ruggedly handsome man with a dark past, a sexy woman innocent yet not, werewolves, witches, demons and lots of action to keep the pages turning. Nice.

Check it out, you'll enjoy it. And make sure you check out Michele's other works. Visit www.michelehauf.com

Guest Blog With Elizabeth Black

Today we have erotic romance author Elizabeth Black joining us for a guest blog. Thanks for joining us today, Elizabeth.

Thanks for having me today, Roxanne.

Today I'm going to chat about ghosts. Are you bored with your very human partner? Find a horny ghost! You'd be in good company.

Here's something you don't read every day. The headline was surreal: Two Women Report Ghost Has Been Having Sex With Them.

Two women in Washington State in the U. S. claimed that a ghost " has been placing sensors on their bodies and visiting them in their house […] They said that the ghost has been having sexual intercourse with them."

I swear I'm not making this up.

I had heard of women claiming to have been attacked by ghosts, but it was surreal to see such a matter-of-fact article about it in a local newspaper. Have you ever seen the movie "The Entity"? It's a 1981 flick about a woman who was repeatedly raped by a ghost in front of her husband and children. The movie was slammed by critics when it first came out because it was rather explicit, but it became a cult favorite. It was supposedly based on the real life astral rapes of Carla Moran. Whether Moran actually exists has been up for debate for years. I've seen a reality show that supposedly interviewed her and had shown pictures of the astral being that had raped her, but the jury is still out on whether or not the woman actually exists. The movie was remade in Japan and is slated to be released in 2009. I'm curious to see it. Can't wait until it comes out on DVD.

It would probably be exciting to have consensual sex with a ghost, but being raped by a ghost would be horrifying. First off, you can't see the attack coming. Ghosts tend to be invisible. At the same time, a playful ghost could make otherworldly sex lots of fun. I often include ghosts in some of my erotic paranormal romance stories. In my short free story "The Storm", the ghost of a pirate returns to Gloucester, Massachusetts, bent on revenge. His appearance during a nor'easter is rather frightening, especially since he is not a nice fellow. On the other hand, in my new novel, "The Haunting of the Sandpiper Inn", a rather randy ghost haunts the inn in question, spying upon my main character Martha Ellis McKay as she undresses. He's able to do this because he remains invisible while she's puttering about in her room. He does eventually 'fess up, and she gets quite annoyed with him, but he's harmless so she isn't too upset. This ghost manages to help her solve the mystery of the Sandpiper Inn, so he isn't completely useless.

So, not only do ghosts make great characters for sexy fiction, they really do like to have sex with humans, if that Washington State case is any indication. Bored with your very human partner? Find a horny ghost! You'd be in good company.

Reviews:

"This is a rather gripping read...The relationship between the characters builds up quickly, culminating in some heavy sex scenes. I did enjoy this book and felt like I was on one of those ghost investigation programmes...This book is definitely worth a read if you like hot and steamy mixed with horror and hauntings."

"I loved this story by Ms. Black. I am a huge fan of her writing and I thoroughly enjoy her haunting storylines and characters. She developed a fun storyline that immediately pulled me in from the very first page and entertained me until the very last sentence. I felt as if I was walking along with Ellis and the GHOST team trying to debunk the hauntings that The Sandpiper Inn seemed to be experiencing. This is a great story that doesn’t just have to be read at Halloween. If you love ghost stories and love to read about haunted places, this is definitely one you must add to your library. Ms. Black did a wonderful job with this story and I can’t wait to read her next one. You’re definitely going to enjoy this story. Don’t pass this one up!"

Seth's a vampire who can shift into jaguar form, works with the police to track down miscreants, and faints at the sight of blood.
His best friend, Luke, is a cop whose partner, Paxton, is Seth's mate... only she doesn't know it yet. Oh, and it's too bad she hates vampires. When Luke, Seth, and Paxton are sent on the trail of a panty burglar, things heat up and Paxton can no longer deny the attraction she feels for Seth.

This was a nicely balanced story - some silliness, a bit of mystery, and lots and lots of steam! My only complaint? I wanted to read more about these characters. Please bring us more of their stories, Ms. McKenna!

Bad Girls and Badass Demons! Guest Post and Giveaway from Maree Anderson

I’d never written a novella before, so when I heard about the Red Sage Alpha Male Novella Contest, I figured I’d give it a go. Nothing like a bit of a challenge, huh?

Hang on. Red Sage publish erotic romance? Yikes! Not just a challenge, then, a really biiiiig challenge! So after I’d calmed the “no way can I do this!” demons, the first thing I got stuck into was some research. I bought a couple of Secrets anthologies and a selection of Red Sage novellas to read. Woot! Gotta love that excuse to buy more books ;-)

The research told me that Red Sage editors aren’t afraid to take chances.

I’d recently watched the TV series, Saving Grace. Grace is a cop who’s lost someone she loves. Her coping mechanisms are booze, cigarettes and sex…with her married partner. Only three or four episodes of the series screened here in New Zealand but Grace’s flaws, her strength and vulnerability in the face of her determination to do what she wanted and to hell with the consequences, stayed with me.

So I decided to take a risk and write heroine who’s not at all a “nice” girl.

Leisa, the heroine of Even Demons Get The Blues, sure looks like an angel but she’s on a slippery slope straight to Hell. Under the influence of a Destroyer demon, Leisa was provoked into committing a terrible crime. She’s lost everyone she loves and she’s filling the empty space in her soul with alcohol and casual sex. And those morning afters, when she wakes up next to some guy and can’t even remember his name, sure ain’t pretty.

So what kind of hero would be man enough to cope with a woman like Leisa?

Someone strong and determined, someone with a dark soul of his own, someone who wouldn’t be put off by the things she’s done. Hmmm. Perhaps not a man, then, but a demon. And not just any old demon, but the most badass demon in my version of Hell.

Introducing Rezon, the sole surviving Drakon demon.

Rez spent the last 4000 years as his king’s enforcer. And no-one kicked demon butt better than Rez. But he got fed up with all the gory bickering and back-stabbing, and much to King Asmodeus’s disgust, Rez opted out and took up Beguiling. When he can be bothered fulfilling his quotas, Rez is the quintessential poster-boy of the Beguiler Unit… until he cops a glimpse of Leisa.

Rez watches Leisa in a be-spelled mirror — he’s got that whole borderline stalker thing going on. Then Leisa picks up one loser too many and Rez convinces himself that if she’s going to fuck anyone tonight, it might as well be him. He whisks her off to his lair to show her what a real man — uh, make that horny demon! — can do for her.

Of course, Hell hath no fury like a Felinoid demon scorned. Rez’s current lover doesn’t take Rez’s unsavory obsession with a slutty human female lying down. She rats him out to King Asmodeus… who’s righteously pissed. Now that Rez’s transgression has been made public, Asmodeus must “officially” kick his scaly lizard ass into oblivion and beyond to teach him a lesson. And Asmodeus isn’t at all certain his own handsome ass wouldn’t get whupped in the process. Lucifer’s hairy balls, sometimes it just sucks to be king!

When the scales of good and evil are in balance, life is all peachy keen for my denizens of Heaven, Hell and Earth. But when Rez and Leisa indulge in a session of hot demonic sex and Leisa accidently breaks through Rez’s defenses and bonds with him, the scales aren’t just tipping, they’re verging on meltdown!

The sole surviving Drakon demon bonded to a human whose soul is tagged by a Destroyer? Now there’s Hell to pay. Not to mention Heaven. And an even higher power that has the potential to redeem both Leisa and Rez… if they manage to fulfill their destinies before they’re obliterated from this life and the next. Now they just have to figure out what those destinies might be!

I was rapt when Even Demons Get The Blues finalled in the Alpha Male Novella Contest. I was even more delighted when Red Sage offered to publish my manuscript—it was a June 2009 Red Sage Presents release. I hope you enjoy reading about how Rez and Leisa finally get their happy ending, despite some pretty dire odds.

And for those of you who might be wondering what happened to Rez’s Felinoid ex, Naamah’s story is currently with my editor. In “Let Sleeping Demons Lie” Naamah tangles with a Leonine Lycan prince, so it’s kitty vs lion, with some truly heinous hyenas thrown into the mix…mwah hah hah!

If you’d like to sign up to my website newsletter I’ll keep you posted on my progress. Oh, and don’t forget to leave your postal address in the confirmation email, so I can post you an Even Demons Get The Blues bookmark!

Monday Musings

OK since I have no more vampire poetry to publish right now I'll start a new thing on Mondays where I'll just post random musings and ramblings. :-)

I had a wonderful weekend alone with my husband. This was something of a miraculous feat since we haven't been kid free in over 3 years. We have a 3 year old, a 10 year old and a 17 year old. We used to be able to send the older kids off to friends and family and have time alone together every now and then.

Then the little guy came and turned our world upside down. He's a handful and a half and no one can handle him. We didn't have the support systems I enjoyed so much when the other ones were little. Not even my mother could handle this kid. So it's been a long, rough road with our baby demon. Though now he's finally semi stable enough to leave with friends and family. Woo hoo!

So hubby and I spent the weekend kid and whine free.

We had lots of quiet romantic time together ;-) and then we did some of our favorite things like antiquing and yard saling. I know doesn't sound like fun to some but hey it is something that both of us enjoy so it was great because him and I don't share a lot of the same interests. I like books and art he likes trucks, mud and fishing. See? Antiques are something we share and shared interests are good.

OK so this week I have a couple authors joining us. Tomorrow Maree Anderson author of Even Demons Get the Blues will be joining us and Thursday Elizabeth Black will be guest blogging with us about her latest, The Haunting of the Sandpiper Inn.

August is looking like a sad month here at FB as far as guest spots with authors and author interviews go. I have a few scheduled but am in need of authors. If there are any paranormal or urban fantasy authors out there who would like to guest blog or be interviewed here at Fang-tastic Books please let me know, I would love to schedule you.

Meet the Faustin Brothers with Author Evie Byrne

Today we have guest author Evie Byrne discussing her Faustin Brothers series and giving away a copy of Bound by Blood . Thanks for joining us Evie!

I didn't really intend to write a trilogy of vampire books, but the vampires found me. Well, one did. Alex.

In those minutes between sleep and waking, when all my ideas come, Alexander Faustin showed up on the doorstep of my imagination, cute and goofy and incredibly hot. I eavesdropped while he talked with his decidedly eccentric mother, who sounded like Natasha from the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. Between drags on her cigarette, she said to him, "Alexander, without he has family, a vampyr ezz nuthking."

Huh?

I hadn't planned to write a vampire book, but heck, talkative vampires had moved into my head. I had no choice.

I knew from the start that these would be different vampires. Alex had a mother, so he'd been born, not made. He had a soul. He was mortal.

Huh.

I began to see his vampirism as both a blessing and a disability, and was intrigued by all the possibilities of writing about the adventures of an all-too-human vampire.

While I worked on Alex's story, I caught glimpses of his charismatic big brothers, and I realized each of them had a story too. So one book turned into three: The Faustin Bros. Trilogy, three erotic vampire romances made up of surprising twists.

In each book, the hero has to hunt down and win his bride. Yes, they have destined mates, but I swear it's not an authorial cop out! Each of the brothers has to work hard for their Happily Ever After, because their women are not pushovers.

This is the series in a nutshell:

Alex, is the youngest and the family romantic. He's always wanted to marry, but his human mate has no interest in marrying a monster. His story is Called by Blood.

("A new and refreshing twist on vampires..." Paranormal Romance)

The middle brother, irascible, workaholic Gregor, has no intention of marrying, prophecy or no prophecy. Fate is about to knock him on his ass. His story is Bound by Blood.

("It had me laughing one minute and teary-eyed the next…Evie Bryne’s erotic vampire tales are not to be missed." Romance Junkies)

The eldest, Mikhail, is a lonely prince. When he learns his destined bride is his arch enemy, he knows he'll be mated or dead within the month. His story is Damned by Blood, and it will be released at Samhain on September 22nd.

The giveaway:

I'm giving away a copy of a Bound by Blood to a lucky commenter. Please note, this will be an ebook. If you follow this link, you can read the first chapter at Samhain. You can read a sexier excerpt here at my website.

Release-wise, Bound by Blood is the second book in the series, but chronologically it is the first, so it is actually the best place to begin the series. Strange but true. I'll return here in September to give away a copy of Mikhail's story.

To win, all you have to do is comment below on the following questions. You don't have to answer all of them:

Have you noticed a lot of snark lately directed against vampire romance? If so, what do you think has caused the burn out? What makes you insatiable for vampire books?

I'll draw a winner at random. Make sure you leave some way for me to contact you!

Many thanks to Roxanne for graciously inviting me to blog here today.

Happy reading!

Evie

Join Guest Author Michelle Houston for a Chance to Win a Book and Goody Bag

I think the concept behind the Fang-tastic blog is cool, and when I got the opportunity to contribute, I jumped all over it. But then I got stuck – what to write a post about? The bounds of the post hold me only to something to do with the paranormal and writing.

I have never been good at narrowing a topic down. : ) Give me a theme and I can write on it, but let me pick a theme? Youch! So I may ramble a little, but I have to say, I had a lot of fun thinking on this post, and why I love writing paranormals.

Like many people, when I think of paranormal, I think of vampires and ghosts and werewolves.

Since starting a series about shifters though, I have really pushed past my werewolf view, although I admit I did start the series off with a wolf, and started seeing all of the possible shifters out there. Recently I did a poll, just out of curiosity, about what readers would think made a sexy shifter and I was surprised at the number of people who thoughts snakes would be sexy.

I guess I can kind of see it, since one of my favorite books has an alien race that has some reptilian trails, including no hair and very soft scales on their bodies. But a shifter that would actually turn into a snake?

Wow. I am not certain I have the imagination to pull off writing something like that. I have considered owls, hawks, the various cats and canines, and ever written one story a while back about a woman who turned into a bat-eared fox.

But there is so much more to the paranormal realm that just shifters, biters, and haunters. LOL What about succubus and incubi? Gods and Goddesses of lore? Creatures of folklore and myth?

I’ve given each of them a try, and I have to say, it was a blast each time. Mythology has so many wonders to it, that with a little creativity, an untold number of stories can emerge. The same is true for folklore.

During one of my English classes, we had to read nine different variations to the Cinderella story, then write a paper on our own interpretation to one of them. While the various stories did get a bit monotonous, it was fun to try and read deeper into the core of the story.

I think that’s what’s so fun with writing paranormals. There can always be more to them than meets the eye, because the bonds of science and math do not hold you back. Anything, and everything, is possible. As a scientist, I deal with fact and objectivity every day. But as a writer, I get to screw with the laws of physics, tweak what I want to, and make up the rest. I also get a chance to reexamine the laws of biology in the context of the supernatural.

I think that is the best part for me, when the scientific and creative parts of my mind decide to collaborate. It makes for an interesting ride, and I think that more than anything is why I enjoy writing paranormals so much.

Take for example, my newest series, all about gay shifters. Now, in the higher order animals, it takes a male and a female to replicate. So by necessity, nature isn’t all that worried about being nice, and instead is focused on reproduction and replacing the two parents with viable offspring.

So what happens when a gay man is bitten by a werewolf and turns into one himself? What if he is the only one, since gay werewolves didn’t happen naturally?

Oh yeah, I had a lot of fun crafting this series. And even though ‘Taming the Wolf’ is a short story, it was a blast to write.

I have another set of shifter stories where the genetics of the line had become so mixed, it is possible to actually select the animal one wants to turn in to. In families, each person could theoretically turn into a different animal. So no longer are they held to a predetermined creature, they have a choice, but can pick only one.

Heck of a hard decision. I mean, there are so many cool creatures out there, how do you pick just one? What would you pick?

And while you are crafting your answer, let me share an excerpt from
Taming the Wolf with you.

Ben felt the first ripple rising to the surface, skin turning to fur, as his wolf felt him thinking about it, and was demanding its share of time. The last few days he hadn't allowed it control as much as normal and it was starting to get frustrated. Snarling, he regained his feet and stalked off, forcing the beast back. For Nathan's sake, he had to teach him control, then teach him how to partition his time between wolf and man.

Nathan moved to stand behind him, his hand light against his shoulder. "Ben?"

The question in his voice elicited a moan from Ben. It had been so long since a man had been this close to him, so long since he had felt the touch of another on his skin. He wanted it, craved the feel of two bodies sliding against each other in passion, of thrusting deep into another man's body and feeling him tense in pleasure. More than that though, he was coming to crave Nathan's touch; not just anyone would do anymore.

Ben flashed back to the previous day when he had provoked Nathan into a fight, had felt the pressure of the other man attempting to pin him down. Ben had almost given in to the sensations cascading over him and kissed the younger man, especially when he felt the press of Nathan's erection against his hip. Then he had felt the brush of fur against his skin as Nathan lost control of his body and the wolf worked its way to the surface. That fact allowed him the control he desperately needed.

"It's nothing you did Nathan. Nature is just kicking my ass at the moment."

The warmth of his touch shifted, as he slid his hand down Ben's back, lightly caressing him, trying to sooth as was his way. Tipping his chin to rest against his chest, Ben closed his eyes and fought the dueling sensations. Selfishly, he wanted to enjoy Nathan's touch, but by the same token he was denying the wolf the same courtesy. And it was biting and clawing at the injustice.

And now to thank you for joining me today, I’d like to offer a prize. All you have to do to enter is to leave a comment (and hopefully shed some insight into what animal you would shifter into if you could and why). The prize will be a goody bag, (which I will need an address to send it out to you, so make sure to leave a way to contact you, so that I can get that from you later), as well as a title from my back list. I write in a lot of different genres and sexualities, so I hope to have something to match your reading preferences.

A Review of Blood Slave by Michelle Houston

by Michelle Houston

Phaze, 2008

ebook,

$2.00

paranormal, shorts

erotic, M/M, BDSM

4.5 fangs

When it was discovered that vampires weren't myths, many people wanted to kill all of them. A virus to do so was crafted; however, instead of killing the vampires, it mutated the vampirism virus. Now all vampires, old and new, are blind. Vampires have become a protected race, and carefully screened human submissives serve as blood slaves and guide dogs for the vampires. Blood Slave contains two related erotic short stories about this vampire and human relationship.

In the first story, "Where the Blind Leads," human Brandon has completed the required testing to become a blood slave and now has an "interview" with his potential vampire master, Daren, to discover if they're physically compatible.

In "Leading the Blind," former blood slave and submissive Nicholas has become a vampire. His former master, Daren, understands that Nicholas doesn't have it in him to be dominant and arranges an "interview" between Nicholas and Dominic, a dominant human.

These were very well-written and steamy M/M BDSM shorts. Although each story is less than 20 pages long, Michelle Houston does a wonderful job creating compelling characters and situations with hot outcomes. I'll be looking for more of Houston's stories, and I hope that she has, or will, write more stories set in the Blood Slave world.

A Review of Stakes and Stilettos by Michelle Rowen

Four Fangs for Stakes and Stilettos By Michelle Rowen

Sarah Dearly is back in the 4th book of Rowen's series and getting into trouble again. Poor Sarah has the worst luck. Ever since getting turned into a vampire on a blind date she gets into more trouble than any person (or new vampire) should. This time her trouble starts when she goes on a job interview and ends up not with a job but with a wooden stake sticking out of her chest.

She gets saved by the Red Devil, too bad her much too serious master vampire boyfriend, Thierry, doesn't seem as thrilled about that as he should be. He claims the Red Devil doesn't exist, if that's the case then who saved Sarah and why?

To make matters worse when Thierry and Sarah go to her ten year high school reunion a witch places a curse on Sarah that turns her into a blood thirsty nightwalker, a type of vampire Thierry helped become extinct.

The results of the curse are sometimes comical and other times very serious as Sarah deals with new symptoms and tries to find a way to break the curse. While Thierry tries to take their relationship farther by giving her a ring and sending his wife divorce papers. Too bad wifey sudden;y decides she doesn't want a divorce even if she has no problem with Thierry and Sarah being together.

In the end Sarah is faced with some tough decisions after discovering who the Red Devil is. What will she do and will the curse ever be broken before Sarah is stuck being one of the true undead forever?

Stakes and Stilettos is a wild romp that keeps you wondering. Highly entertaining and fun to read, Sarah Dearly is such a quirky character. I pity the vamp with such bad luck. Poor Sarah, being a vampire shouldn't suck that much. She just keeps getting the wrong end of the stake.

Part romance, part mystery, part paranormal chick lit Rowen's Immortality Bites series is fun, witty and a pleasure to read. For fans of fangs this series is for you, especially if you like quirky characters and crazy story lines to shake things up a bit.

The next book comes out in September ( maybe late August) and I am sad to say that; Tall, Dark and Fangsome; will be the last book in the Immortality Bites series but at least we'll get to see what happens with Sarah and Thierry and hopefully get some closure. It's been a fun and fanged series and I look forward to the next ( and final) book.

Michelle Rowen does have some other books coming out, including a new YA series that sounds fun. To learn more visit www.michellerowen.com and drop by in September when Michelle will be a guest here at Fang-tastic Books.

Genre: Science Fiction
SubGenre: Horror
EBook formats
ISBN: 978-1-60313-601-3
Trade paperback ISBN: 978-1-60313-602-0

I have something to introduce to you today, this is especially for those of you who love a bit more sci-fi blended in to your paranormals: Ann-Marie Desiree's Whiskey Creek Press -paranormal murder mystery novel......

by Ann-Marie Desiree

On the distant planet of Erda, in a distant future of uncertainty, a dark and evil alien force haunts the space colony’s hotel. Travelers to there think they will be able to enjoy a nice stay in the luxury suites, only to be horrified beyond all belief. More and more bodies of murdered Earthlings - especially children - are being found. And a garden of paradise is exactly the opposite: a garden of death! But there is no known entity found to be behind these mysterious killings.

An elite unit of investigators is hastily put together, from all parts of the galaxy. Foremost among them are a special male and female team, with yet to be discovered psychic and ESP abilities. But what are the ranges and limitations of their secret talents? And will the authorities of the all powerful Imperium even officially acknowledge their findings?

It is accepted that uses such as clairvoyant and telepathic powers can help solve murders. But these are for the living, and not for the dead. Plus psychics from Earth are used to investigating others of their own kind. How would these special abilities work with aliens? And most importantly, what if the alien isn’t even an actual living being at all?

This exciting tale combines the future of science fiction with the paranormal, the abnormal, and the unbelievable. It is an endless experience of suspenseful thrills, interrupted by too many terrible chills. The psychology of detectives interrogating suspects, and the uses of DNA and other futuristic methods are well included. But it is still old-fashioned police work, slow and methodical, that could provide any real results in the end.

Their findings unfold to become quite a surprise conclusion for all of the participants involved. And the male-female psychic team especially gets an unexpected shock, and when they least expect it. They must somehow first fight their own fears, if they are ever to match the dark terror.

And they must first find it, if they are ever to fight it.

That is if it truly exists beyond mere imagination.Truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and the fiction presented here will definitely come true..... if it hasn’t done so already.

Predatoress and Blood Wine Giveaway

Immerse yourself in the story of the war, waged inside me, against forces over which I had no control. I confess, I’m ashamed of some of the things I was compelled to do. Yet this is the story of love’s victory, which is becoming known to the world just now.

Predatoress: Hungarian Bride starts in September 2003 in the ancient town of Sopron, Hungary, when one of Dracula’s spawn turns me, Emma Gabor, an 18-year-old college freshman, into one of The Undead. I become a blood-thirsty but reluctant vampire, constantly questioning my morality as I foist myself upon victim after victim.

Compelled by survival and unwilling to tread this path alone, I vampirize my three best friends, Kati, Gizi, and Eszti. We go on bloodthirsty rampages every night, luring our victims through charm and sexuality or simply overpowering them with tricks and violence.

Out on the town one night at Club Colosso for a joint feeding session with my friends, I dance with Zoltan Szabo, a genetic research fellow at the university, who is also the love object of my friends, Kati and Eszti. We form a friendship based on scientific interests and fall in love at a charity ball held in the ancient castle of Frakno. We consummate our passion! I now realize that working with Zoltan could be the key to freeing my friends and me from this terrible scourge of vampirism! I must, with great pain, hold back from telling him the truth and from making him one of The Undead...

Interview with Charlotte Boyett~Compo

Today we have an interview with the very prolific author, Charlotte Boyett~Compo. Thanks for joing us today Charlee. Let's get started with your interview.

Have you always wanted to be a writer or is it something you discovered along the path of life?

From the age of six I knew I wanted to write. I was fascinated by television…which hadn’t been out that long…and I began making up stories to go along with what I was watching. Inner Sanctum was one of my favorite shows as was Shock Theatre so I grew up being mesmerized by the macabre, the supernatural, and the unexpected. My Irish grandfather and I would sit in the swing on the front porch as the cicadas and crickets sang and Venus appeared in the sky over rural Georgia and he would start a story then insist I finish it. It had to make sense and not be ridiculous…which is hard for a six year old child not to be…or he’d make me ‘re-write’ it. We’d spin tales until my mother dragged me in to bed. I’d lay awake and think up more stories I could tell my PaPa the next night. I believe he helped me hone my skills for he was a master seanchaí, an Irish storyteller of the highest order. The stories had to be believable and they had to hold his attention or he’d tear them apart, explain what was wrong with them, and make me start over again. I credit him with giving me the ability to make my tales believable.

How has your writing path evolved? Where did you start?

I wrote my first ‘novel’ at the age of twelve. I was enamored of Michael Landon’s character of Little Joe on Bonanza. My first crush had been on cowboy actor Lash LaRue and westerns were like a drug to me. I spent every Saturday at the movies watching Gene Autry, Roy Rodgers, and Bob Steele. It was natural I’d fall in love with Little Joe. He was cute, had a killer smile, great hair, and he was a cowboy. So I filled up a spiral bound notebook with a book called Western Flame. I wrote my next book at age fifteen. By then I was madly in love with Robert Vaughn who had been one of the stars of my favorite movie of all time: The Magnificent Seven. He had done a circus movie called The Big Show so my next book was about a circus lion tamer. It was titled The Great Giovanni and it was terrible! By the time I reached high school, my best friend and I co-wrote a play that was put on by the ninth grade assembly for the entire school. It was called Did You Say Ghost? It was a silly comedy but it impressed the hell out of our English teacher who encouraged us both to take up writing in college.

Do you commit to a daily writing goal? Like so many words or chapters?

No, I’ve always felt that limits you, boxes you into a set routine. I’m not a linear thinker. My mind wanders and when my characters go off on a path I hadn’t planned I just sit back and enjoy the ride. I’ve had reviewers comment that they thought they knew where the story was going and then were blindsided by something totally unexpected. It’s that unusual element that has drawn so many readers to my work. If I planned a certain number of chapters or a specific word count, I would be restricting my creativity. I give it free rein and if I write two chapters today or only a few dozen sentences, it is what the muse has dictated and that’s where I go.

If you could give a new writer one piece of advice, what would it be?

Don’t ever let your family, friends, co-workers, or neighbors discourage you. Too many would-be authors have been stopped cold in their tracks by a ‘well-meaning’ relative who didn’t want them to ‘get your heart broken’. I’ve seen a lot of writers who I thought were very talented lay aside that talent because no one supported them, believed in them, and did everything they could to ‘make them see the light’. The thing is: if you want something bad enough you’ll find a way to get it. Wait until the kids are in bed, the hubby is snoring, the interfering parents or in-laws are occupied and then take your laptop or your pad and pen and have at it. Live the dream because one day it just might pay off for you. I was very lucky in having a husband who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. He was my staunchest supporter and my biggest fan. He read everything I wrote and was the first eyes to see every book. He died in April but I know he’s sitting beside me right now…just as he did at every book signing I had…with his hand on my shoulder to encourage me. He never allowed me to give up and when my grieving is less intense, I’ll get back to the writing he insisted on his death bed that I continue.

Are you a long time paranormal fan or new to the “Other” world?

As I said, I grew up watching Shock Theater. My mom and I would sit glued to our chairs in her bedroom as we watched Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, and a host of the scariest creatures that era could produce. The only light in the room would be from the screen so it was eerie and set the mood perfectly. I loved the horror movies and when I got old enough, subscribed to Famous Monster Magazine. Most of those old movies are cheesy by today’s bloodthirsty standards but some of it still scares me. The sight of the Mummy lumbering toward you with his arms outstretched, the Blob oozing under the door, the Creature from the Black Lagoon emerging from the watery depths, the werewolf stalking its prey….thrilled me at the same time they sent chills down my spine. To this day, I don’t like anything that comes at me with steady intent. Something unstoppable, incapable of being killed because it’s already dead, or so powerful that nature can’t rein it in, scares the bejesus outta me. I loathe robots and although I enjoyed Transformers and intend to see the sequel, I still get gooseflesh when something lumbers toward me…even if it’s on a movie screen.

Tell us a little about your newest book.

WyndStones is the first of two long-awaited sequels to one of my most popular books, NightWind. I have had readers begging me for the continuation of the story. Wyndstones tells the tale of a young woman who goes to join her brother in the high mountains of Appalachia where he has been assigned as a priest to the people of Tabor Hill. What she doesn’t know is that Fate has arranged for her to be there. The people of the Hill have been waiting a long time for her to join them. Something else is awaiting her arrival with plans of its own. A Nightwind demon, a succubus who is blood sworn to protect the women of her family, has come to see that she unlocks the door to the Abyss in order to free more of its kind…especially the Prime Nightwind, Syntian Cree…and unleash an unholy vengeance on womankind. There is a lust story mingled in with the plot and the sex scenes are very explicit.

How did the idea for your newest book/series come about?

I had always planned to do two sequels to NightWind. I just hadn’t found the right formula that intrigued me until I had a strange dream one night. I dreamed I was living in the Appalachian mountains and was married to a blacksmith named Josia. We didn’t have any children but all the village children flocked around me because I’d sit and spin tales to them. I didn’t love Josia because he was a cruel, hateful man so when a handsome stranger suddenly appeared out of the night, my hormones went haywire. He could not come into the village because there were white-washed stones circling the entire settlement to keep him out. Josia called them wyndstones and said they were there to keep the demons away. The stranger…who never had a name in my dream…couldn’t cross the wyndstones but I could so I joined him in the forest only to find out he was a succubus there to claim my soul. I woke up with my heart pounding and couldn’t get out of bed fast enough so I could write down the impressions from the dream while they were still fresh.

What kind of research do you do for your books?

Unless there is a plot point that I want to make sure is correct in regard to history or location or an it requires an explanation of what something is, I don’t do research. I love to world build, to create creatures of my own imagination, mix vampires and werewolves traits…as I did when I created my signature Reaper shape shifters…so a new entity is born. I will incorporate as much of the original legends and data on any creatures I use as I can find to make it believable to those who are familiar with them but I try not to go into too much depth because most readers don’t really want the ‘research’ laid out for them to have to wade through. They want the meat and potatoes, hold the beans. Although I might bend the facts a bit, I don’t stretch it so far that it isn’t recognizable or believable.

What books are currently on your to-read list?

I am reading John Sandford’s latest novel, Wicked Prey. He is one of my favorite authors. I just finished Stuart Woods Hot Mahogany so when I finished Sandford, I’ll pick up the latest Christine Feehan or Sherrilyn Fenyon novel to even out the interest. I go from mystery/thrillers to paranormal to something by Dean Koontz or John Saul then skip over to Fr. Andrew Greeley’s Irish series of novels. I have very eclectic tastes and get bored reading the same genre over and over again. I liked it to having to eat oatmeal every morning of my life when I was growing up and hating it so much that I can’t even look at oatmeal now without cringing. I need variety so there are four or five different genres of books sitting on my nightstand.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

John Sandford, John Grisham, John Saul, Dean Koontz, Robin Cook, Andrew Greeley, Michael Connelly, Ken Eulo, Dennis Lehane, David Wiltse, and Brian Lumley are my favorite male authors. Christine Feehan, Shirlee Busbee, Johanna Lindsey, Rosemary Rogers, Jude Deveraux, Sherrilyn Kenyon, JR Ward, Lucy Blue, and Kresley Cole are my favorite female authors. I never miss a book by any of them. My favorite book of all time is a tossup between Anya Seton’s Green Darkness and Rosemary Rogers’ Sweet, Savage Love (which was the first bodice ripper romance I ever read and I was hooked!)

When you are not writing, what can you usually be found doing?

I watch a lot of television because I have certain shows and actors I follow. I love movies and have a large collection of horror, SF, and fantasy movies on DVD. I go to the theater to see the latest big, sweeping movie like Transformers or Star Trek, Terminator or Wolverine. In order for the movie to get my money, it’s got to be a cinema graphic experience for me. I wouldn’t pay to see a chick flick or a comedy or a romantic movie on the big screen. There’s got to be explosions, complex graphics and thrilling music for me to sit in a theater. Movies like Braveheart, Titantic, 300…those I will stand in line to watch. I can’t wait for Gerard Butler’s The Gamer to come out or G.I. Joe. I’ll be there with SweetTarts in my purse alongside a bottle of orange juice. :-)
