Black Cats Rule Guest Post & BLONDE WITH A WAND Giveaway with Vicki Lewis Thompson

TGIF and TGTBID! (Thank God The Book Is Done). I’m delighted to be hanging out with the Fang-tastic bloggers today, and I’m ready to party because I made my May 3rd deadline! Woot! I’ve just finished writing two books about sexy werewolves, but they won’t come out until 2011, so you may not want to talk about those yet.

We could talk about black cats, though. A friend of mine just rescued a little kitten lying in a puddle of rain beside the road. Another few hours and that kitten would have been dead. My friend put him in her car (gender was figured out later) and took him home to a heating pad and some kitten replacement milk.

At first the little guy couldn’t even hold up his head, but within hours he’d begun to show signs he’d make it. Soon he was prancing around and hissing at the dogs. My friend couldn’t keep him – too many pets already – but she found a woman who is thrilled to have him, so I’m happy to report he’s safe in a new home.

My friend thinks the kitten was thrown out of a car window and that his only crime was being born black. Someone was superstitious and thought that a black cat was a really bad thing. So out the car window he went, and only lived because my friend found him in time.

What I have to say to the person who would throw an innocent kitten out of a window is unprintable, but I’m doubly outraged if the reason involved the cat’s color. I love black cats. I live with a black cat named Eve, and she’s my buddy and my muse. She was the inspiration for the magical cat Sabrina in my Hex series.

I love black cats so much that when Anica, my heroine in BLONDE WITH A WAND turned her boyfriend Jasper into a cat, he became a sleek black cat. He looked, in my mind’s eye, like a miniature panther. Black cats are so elegant.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m a cat lover who appreciates other colors, too. I’m in a July anthology called CUPID CATS with Katie MacAlister and Connie Brockway, and the cat in my story is silver-gray with black swirls. He’s a magical matchmaking cat, as are all the cats in that collection.

But I can’t help favoring the black kitties. I know they are often the last to be adopted out of a shelter. Eve came from the Humane Society, and I can’t imagine anyone giving her up, but someone did, and now she’s the light of my life.

I’ve also heard that black dogs don’t get adopted as often, either. Do you have a kitty or a doggie in your life? What are your favorite colors, or does it matter to you?

Let’s talk! Anyone commenting gets a shot at winning an autographed copy of BLONDE WITH A WAND, by the way.

Did I mention I’m ready to party?

Good Morning,

We do not currently have any pets - but our daughter is graduating May 29th and she has asked for a kitten. :) At first she wanted a ginger kitty, then a gray striped kitty - now she says it doesn't matter.

We are going to the Humane Society to adopt the kitty, and unfortunately she will have a great many kitties to choose from.

I am a follower and would love to be entered into the drawing for Blonde With A Wand.

I have a kitty. His name is New York, we found him and his brothers & sisters in the back field of our old house. And though I was able to tame them all New York is the one that liked me the most. His name is New York because I told my dad "if you get rid of this kitten I am running away to New York and never coming back." LOL, it just kind of stuck.

In cats I tend to like the black ones. But New York isn't black he's a smokey white with a few smokey grey tiger strips on different areas of his body... sort of like a patch work cat. LOL. In dogs I like the carmel colored ones but it doesn't really matter, because if I think they're cute I'll still try to sneak them into the house. LOL.

** Don't worry about entering me for the giveaway, I already have a copy. And I love it. **

When we went to pick our dog, the color really didn't matter to us. It was more the breed and personality. We wanted a labradoodle because my hubby has allergies.

I have a dog that is black but when I adopted her she was a puppy so I don't think color mattered.

I have a little hamster, which I believed to be a girl...until the incident! Haha! Did not want to see that! Anyway, it is a little tan and white fellow. He loves to keep himself clean, so you'll either catch him napping or spit washing his fur. His name is Prissy (aka Pissy aka Hamchee Bodalee).

My mom's 2 cats are both black: one long-haired & one short-haired. They're both entirely catty, too. : ) The short-haired kitty was mine before I had to go to college & leave her with my mom, but now she loves my mom the most, & I decided not to hold it against either of them. lol.

Hi, Michelle! Congratulations to your daughter, and thumbs up on her choice of a graduation gift. Some kitty is going to be very lucky.

Jessica, I just *knew* you'd be a black cat fan, but sometimes cats choose us, and that sounds like what happened with New York. Love the name.

Unknown said...

Bethie, I love that you went ahead with a dog and just found one that didn't bother your hubby's allergies. That's awesome!

Those puppies are irresistible, Cait! But boy, do they know how to chew stuff, huh?

LOL Marianna! Did you name him Prissy before or after "the incident"? Too funny.

Unknown said...

Very noble of you, Christa! I'll bet your kitty was also punishing you for leaving her, LOL. Cats do know how to hold a grudge. :-)

Sherry, it sounds as if you just love animals, period. That's a good thing!

I love cats and I also think black ones are very sleek and sexy- definitely like little panthers.

I don't pick cats based on color- in fact they usually pick me. I don't think I've ever set out on a "I am getting a pet" mission, they usually come to me.

One of my cats, Angel, is now almost 13 years old. I found her crying under a pocrh when her eyes were barely open-her mom had abandoned her. I brought her home and fed her with a tiny little baby doll bottle and she thrived- had her ever since-also have one of her kittens Blue.

Then my other cat, Ginger, was also a finder. She showed up at my mom's then followed me home and decided to stay with us. That was 7years ago.

We have a our first coton de teleur..(not sure if I spelled that right, lol) My whole life we had shelties, so this a new experience. It amazes me how different breeds are. For the color, it doesn't matter. I love all dogs, even the ugly ones :). What's going to be interesting about our puppy is, she has a black coating but her fur on her head will turn a creamy color and the rest of her will be black.

Have to admit, I'm not a cat person. I love my friends cats but would never own one.

Roxanne, you must give off "cat lover" vibes, LOL! I'm glad you've rescued those kitties.

Have fun with your new puppy, robsad! I feel about dogs the way you do about cats. Love my friends' dogs, but don't want to adopt one.

Sullivan, I'll bet that's how most of us are about color -- we remember one certain cat or dog we loved and the color reminds us of them. If I ever got a dog, I'd get a black and tan German Shepherd, because that's the dog we had when I was a kid.

My son decided he wanted one gift for his birthday . . . a cat. So, I've been scoping out the shelter websites to adopt. We're going to hit Petco and Petsmart, both of which have adoptions on the weekends. I'm jonesing for a black cat and I think he'll agree with me!! LOL!

I'm looking forward to reading Vicki's new series. They look like cute books!!

I didn't realize that black kittens are often adopted last. That's so sad! I'd take a million kittens home but I have pretty bad allergies and so mu husband won't let me have any. I still ask every few months:)

We just got a puppy around Christmas and she is awesome. We bought her out of the back of a van while on vacation. I just had to have her and I hated the thought of leaving her behind. The folks seemed nice enough but she was the runt and seemed really sad. She was sick for the first few weeks we had her but now she is doing great. Well, except she just had spay surgery last week.

My kids named her after the town we bought her in and because they couldn't decide on a middle name they combined theirs- her name is Murphy Farrison (Faye and Harrison). So cute:)

Unknown said...

Rosie, I'll bet a cat will let you know he or she is the right one. What fun for you and your son!

Crystal, you were smart to get two. Sometimes I wish Eve had a buddy, but after almost 6 years, I don't think she'd want to share me, LOL.

Murphy Farrison is an adorable name, Anna! Good for you, taking the runt. I'm a sucker for the sad ones, too.

Our cat isn't a brunette but the next one we adopt will be! Black cats get a nasty rap but they're very beautiful. However, I'm a brunette and I hear that blondes have all the fun. If there's a blonde with a wand then there must be some truth to it. Crossing my fingers and looking forward to the magic! :o)

Hi Vicki, I would love to win Blond With A Wand. I have you on my new author list and wish list and can't wait to read this book.

I have 3 cats, a Silver grey persian female, black & white female and Garfield who looks like garfield but slimmer with long hair. I can't understand how anyone can abuse an animal. They need to be punished when they are caught. I am glad of the laws we hace now.

van pham, color definitely isn't the most important thing about an animal -- to me it's a bonus.

Kelsey, I like the "yet" part of your comment. Maybe there's a black kitty in your future!

Absolutely, Witchy Woman! Redheads deserve wands, too. :-)

Isabel, I've been a blonde all my life, and I have had quite a bit of fun, but I have some brunette friends who seem to be having fun, too. ;-)

Thank you for putting me on your wish list, Miss Callie! As for anyone who would abuse an animal . . . as I said in the post, my response is unprintable.

Vicki I love cats too - I have two grey and white kitties right now, I lost my older tortoiseshell (multicolored) cat a few years ago. I've always loved black cats, and before I adopted the current cats, I almost picked a lovely black cat - who did get adopted shortly after.
I love your books, and somehow I haven't picked up either of these new ones, so I'd be thrilled to win a copy.

Barbara, thanks for the lovely compliment! And chin scratches to your two kitties, too.

I'm so sorry, Estella. I'm sure you miss your sweet kitty a lot. Thirteen years is a long time.

Robin, what a great name for a gray cat! I like gray, too. One of my favorites cats was gray.

Poodles are so smart, Sandy. A poodle mix might even be smarter, with those extra genes added in. Sounds like a beautiful dog.

Marlene, I hope you get a black kitty one day soon!

I love cats and dogs, but I live in an apartment complex that doesn't allow pets. I've never had a black cat, my last one was a beautiful silver tabby, but I have had a black dog. She was a beautiful cocker spaniel and I called her Velvet because her shiny coat looked like black velvet.

We have two cats and a Pug. I've always liked black cats but never seem to find them for adoption when I'm in the market for another kitty.

I hadn't heard that black dogs and cats were more difficult to adopt. Must be tied to some superstition re black = evil or something. *eyeroll*

I do have a pet in our life. Chloe was a shelter dog who had separation anxiety. When we first got her, my husband called her my shadow as every time I left a room she followed me. She was very skittish and fearful of men. She didn't know how to play. Now a year later, she has blossomed. She plays outdoors and in the house with her squeaky toys. She even will lay on her back in the crook of my husband arm.

I can't understand why people would discrimante black cats and dogs, me and my family we especially love black animals (we had a black cat, a black dog and a black rabbit too).

Our dog was black and cute as a button, she passed away after 16 years, still miss her. I lived more with her than without!
