Vampires: On Their Way Out?

Vampires: On Their Way Out?

I can't tell you how many times I've heard that vampires are on their way out. Steampunk is all the rage. Zombies are the new vampires. No slight intended to either of those sub-genres of romance and erotica, but it's going to take a whole lot more than a few popular books to dethrone vampires from their spot atop the paranormal world.

It's easy to see why vampires aren't going anywhere any time soon. They're so much like us, and then they're everything we want to be. You won't find a more human paranormal creature than vampires. True, zombies used to be human too, but for heaven's sake, look what's happened to them after they stopped being human. Poor things are losing body parts. Life after humanity is a whole lot better for vamps. Can you think of more than a handful of vampires who don't look incredible? You may find more in straight horror, but in romance, those paranormal men and women have what's become the American dream--eternal youth. No wonder they're so popular.

Vampires also possess what no other paranormal creature can lay claim to. A sensuality that is unrivaled. Sure, weres and shifters have a definite animal magnetism. That can't be denied. But it doesn't outdo the vampire in sensuality. It's something in the way a vampire claims another through the use of his or her mouth. The mouth is one of the sexiest body parts that doesn't have to be covered by clothing. It involves all the senses--the sight of a full pair of lips, the taste of the tongue on yours, the feel of another's mouth on your skin, the sound of someone's tongue melding with yours, the smell of fresh breath (or whatever kind turns you on) as someone comes in to kiss your lips. And all this is the focus of the vampire.

Combine the sensuality of vampires with the danger inherent in a creature that can kill with the very part of his or her body that brings such pleasure, and you have a paranormal superstar. Undoubtedly, there is a place at the paranormal table for all kinds of creatures, but the head of the table won't be vacated by vampires any time soon. As an author of erotic paranormal romance, I'm thrilled by the idea of vampires sticking around. They're so delicious to write! My current release, Blood Avenged, is an excellent example of the sensuality of the vampire. Vasilije, the main character in the book, is nothing less than a hedonist.

Here's a taste of him in all his glory: (warning R rated + adult content ahead)

Vasilije didn’t bother to turn the lights on once inside. In truth, as a vampire, he saw as well in the dark as humans did in the light. Even more, there was no point in acting like they were going to sit on the couch and talk or watch television.

He knew what she wanted and he wanted it too.

Closing the door behind him, he reached out to her and pulled her to him, enjoying the feel of her body pressed to his. She was so warm. So willing.

Her hands slid over his stomach and chest as she arched up to kiss him. Bending down, his lips grazed hers for a moment before he pulled her closer, wanting what she offered.

Warm and wet, her mouth eagerly pressed against his and her tongue met his, teasing him with the tip. His fangs had slid into his mouth at the first touch of her hands on his body, and each playful flick of her tongue came so close, just missing them. To feel her tongue against his fangs would be heaven.

His hand tightened its grip in her hair and tugged, making her moan into his mouth. God, he wanted to hear that sound again. The sound of a woman needy for everything he could give her.

Sasa slid her hands over his shoulders and pulled him to her, pressing her breasts against his body as she devoured his mouth. Her tightened nipples rubbed against him, exciting him. Instinctively, he slid his hand under her thin t-shirt and plucked at one hardened pearl through her lacy bra, squeezing it gently between his thumb and forefinger as he cupped the fullness surrounding it.

Again, she moaned, making that sound that hit him directly between his legs. Already rock hard, his cock strained against the front of his pants. Whatever his mind may have thought about sleeping with her, his body had different plans.

And then her tongue flicked over the tip of one fang and sensations raced from his balls, up his cock, and through his body.

“Fuck,” he groaned as she seductively slid her tongue over his fang again. She had to know what she was doing to him. She had been a vampire’s girlfriend.

The idea that he was about to fuck the girlfriend of his dead vampire momentarily made Vasilije pull back from her, but the touch of her hands on his stomach made him forget every guilty feeling he had. Looking down, he watched her fumble with the shirt buttons.

“Sasa.”

At the sound of her name, she looked up and even in the darkness he saw the look of desire on her face. In one swift movement, he pinned her hands above her head. Pushing her up against the wall, he leaned into her and pressed his thigh between her legs, feeling the heat coming from her. Slowly, a low growl slid from his throat.

Sasa pushed against his hands, but he wouldn’t release her. Grinding against his thigh, she arched her body toward his.

His free hand lifted her shirt over her head and in seconds she stood before him in only her bra. A quick flick with his fingers and it was sailing to the floor to join her shirt.

Vasilije cupped one supple breast in his hand and tenderly stroked her silky soft flesh with his fingertips. Eager to feel her on his tongue, he bent his head and captured a nipple, quickly sucking it to an excited peak. A moan drew his attention from her tightened pink nipple, and he looked up to see Sasa’s face. Brown eyes clouded over with need stared into his.

“Please let me touch you. I want to feel you.”

Silently, he released her hands and returned to what his mouth craved. She felt so good in his mouth. Each pull made her grind her pussy against his thigh. Her hands raked through his hair, stroking and tugging as he sensually nibbled on her.

Vasilije couldn’t remember when he’d been with a woman who was so responsive. Every spot his mouth and hands visited aroused her, and she seemed to worship his body as she moved her hands from his hair to caress his neck and shoulders through his shirt.

Softly, he grazed her nipple with his fangs and from above he heard her cry out. He stood up and smiled with satisfaction, his sharp fangs aching to sink into her. He was surprised to find not fear in her face but desire—pure desire. Her cry hadn’t been of pain but pleasure.

Was she just drunk or did she realize what he planned to do?

As he studied her in the darkness, she pulled him to her and kissed him with a need that sent a jolt to his cock. His hands made their way to her jeans, and he made quick work of the button and zipper. Only cotton panties stood between him and his goal.

Vasilije slid two fingers under those panties and down through her bare slickness. Sasa wriggled against his hand as her mouth fed on his, her tongue darting in and around the inside passionately.

Bending down to pull her pants off, he whispered in her ear, “Careful, love. Teagan may have been able to control himself when you toyed with his fangs, but I won’t.”

Sasa stood in front of him naked and looking up at him as she licked her lips. Lifting herself onto her toes, she whispered next to his mouth, “You mean like this?” and then slowly ran her tongue over the point of his left fang.

His head thrown back, one thought controlled him now.

So why do you love vampires so much? Let me know. I'd love to hear your ideas.

Thanks, Roxanne, for letting me hang out at your fangtastic blog today! It's been a pleasure.

I love vampires. They are sexy, strong, very alpha, territorial, and love to bite. Of course not all are from stories and books this way, but in my world all of them are good and only a few bad apples. I love vampires, I love their stories. I have read some good ones like Jeaniene Frost, Laurell K Hamilton, Lynsay Sands, Charlaine Harris, JR Ward, and just found Felicity Heaton.
Not much of a fan of Steampunk and the only zombie stories are Anita Blake killing them in Laurell K Hamilton's stories. Always though Zombies are supposed to be bad?
Love this blog and keep up with the great reviews and fun posts.

I've just discovered your blog by way of the FB Romance Authors and Bloggers page,so first of all hi.

I agree with you on this one, I think vampires in some form or another are here to stay. I don't know what it is, but you're right on the sensuality. I'm not a huge fan of paranormal, and the novella's I've written are definitely paranormal lite, but there is something sultry and very adult about a vampire. I love the way they're so suppressed and so powerful yet contained. Their power isn't overt, which makes it all the more alluring, and they are so very dark and conflicted. I struggle with the blood and the fangs, I admit, but I discovered with my own attempt at a Regency vampire (Bitten by Desire) that you could actually almost disregard them, and if you focused on the blood sucking as opposed to feeding, it could be really sexy. (BTW, seriously rude-sounding catchpa. Slitymok!)

Well, damn, Roxanne, I'm convinced!

Actually your argument could not be more correct. While the large houses might be saying no to any "new" mss. with vampires-anything (because of a glut on the market), the rest of us know what women want to read and we don't have to be bound by them, and what they deem as "popular" in the next few years.

Besides, like the actual vampire, where everyone wants to kill it with words of doom, it is resurrected every time to enjoy a good romp of popularity. I've a feeling a number of us have found a favorite romantic hero to continue to use in our novels. And rightly so!

Happy writing!

I couldn't agree more with all of you. And Lorelei, no matter how many times the large houses say no, readers keep saying yes. Thanks for stopping by!

that..that, that, that is why I'll never tire of vampires. What an awesome tease. I like to change it up sometime like demons, fey etc....but I always come back to vampires. I tried reading a zombie book but did not like it so much. I hope that authors never listen to that garbage about vampires are getting tiresome because they're not. I love reading about them.

I'm not sure, but I've been into vamps since I was 7 and there were only bad vampires.

I've loved vampires ever since I first saw Lestat. Later, my love of vamps was renewed with the TV show Moonlight. The character Mick St. John was too sexy to resist.

For me it is definitely the sensuality and danger of these creatures. It's what made me want to become a writer. I keep saying that I hope vamps don't go out of style any time soon because I intend to write vampire romance stories for a long time to come.

After reading this excerpt today, I went straight over to Smashwords and bought the book. Can't wait to read it, and can't wait for more in the series.
