I don’t believe in destiny. A few years ago I met a guardian
(guardians are sort of like angels, but not) named Quintus.
He believes I have a destiny and that my path is laid out in front of me. In
fact, he has a lot of ideas about what I should or should not do and who I
should or should not see. And maybe he’s right. Maybe I can’t do anything to
change what the future holds, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stop trying.
Destiny to me takes away my free will—my ability to choose.
Perhaps having been born a guardian means I don’t have any free will to begin
with. But if that were the case, how did I fall in love with Holden? Holden is
a jinni who works in direct opposition to guardians. Where we create, he
destroys. Where we love, he hates. Where we forgive, he avenges. I should be
repulsed by him, but instead he is like gravity. No matter how many times I
jump, I always fall back to him.
Quintus doesn’t understand. I’m not sure that I understand
either, but I know if destiny exists and if my destiny is what Quintus says it
is, then it’s not absolute and my future has yet to be determined.

Many authors claim to have known their calling from a young age. Liz Schulte, however, didn't always want to be an author. In fact, she had no clue. Liz wanted to be a veterinarian, then she wanted to be a lawyer, then she wanted to be a criminal profiler. In a valiant effort to keep from becoming Walter Mitty, Liz put pen to paper and began writing her first novel. It was at that moment she realized this is what she was meant to do. As a scribe she could be all of those things and so much more.
