FIVE THINGS UNDER THE FULL MOON -Guest Author Margot Berwin and a Giveaway

Last night was one of the first warm nights in New York City and it was a full moon too, so I took the elevator up to the 15th floor and sat on the roof all night under the moon and wrote. I was thinking about how much I love being a writer, especially when everyone else is asleep and no one is bothering me, and so I decided to write this post on my five favorite things about being a writer.

Daydreaming
Guilt-free sitting around is one of the best perks of being a writer. My ideas come from dreams both at night and during the day—I actually get paid for closing my eyes and laying in bed and then getting up really fast and writing everything down before I forget. My bed is always covered with books and notes and I even sleep with my laptop. I get some complaints about that-but I don’t care!

Travelling
I don’t always love writing in NYC—it’s noisy and crowded and there’s too much going on all the time, so sometimes when I get an idea for a book I’ll go live somewhere else for awhile. I sublet my apartment and rent a place in a new city where no one knows me and I can be a whole new person. For Scent of Darkness I went to live in New Orleans.  For my first book, Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire I lived in the south of Mexico.
Sometimes I travel in my own neighborhood too. I’m a huge perfume fan as you can tell from the topic of my book. I like to walk from my place on 14th street, all the way uptown to Bergdorf Goodman’s fragrance department and spend a few hours surrounded by beautiful cut glass bottles and awesome un-affordable scents!

Saying I’m a writer
Well, to tell you the truth, this one works better if I say I’m a writer of paranormal erotica. Guys are instantly more attentive--no surprises there. Although my books are more mind manipulation than physical, I do have a dating and sex column in the bushwickdaily.com and I have written erotic stories for nerve.com. Another funny thing is that when you say you’re a writer, people always want to tell you stories so that you’ll write about them!

Book touring
When I go on a tour I go to a different city every day and I never stay anywhere for more than 14 hours. With Scent of Darkness I went to New Orleans, Miami, Nashville, Connecticut, Colorado and Alabama. Oh Brooklyn too of course, but that doesn’t count because it’s only five minutes away on the L train. I got to see a lot of places, really quickly, and more importantly I got over my huge, lifelong fear of public speaking.

Just saying
Saying what I want to say without too much interference from other people is one of the great pleasures of being a writer. My editor at Random House always says “at the end of the day, it’s your name on the cover of the book, so do what feels right to you,” I love her for that!
