Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
My name is N. Dunham and I am the author of Visionary- Unleashed which is book 1 in a young adult trilogy series. I enjoy reading young adult books along with many other genre’s but I feel that it is important to capture readers when they are young so that they are inspired to keep on reading.
What inspired you to write this book?
As a teen, I didn’t read much at all. I started to read a lot more as a young adult and discovered that I love books, all kinds of books. This led me to think about what kinds of books I might enjoy.
I have had so many ideas, but never had enough time to put the pen to paper. Last year, when I started writing, the time just worked out. I started writing late at night when the house was quiet and my ideas were able to flow. Nature and Red-tailed hawks have also inspired this story!
Please tell us about your latest release.
Visionary-Unleashed is centered around sixteen-year-old Aislinn Lee Murphy who accidentally unleashes her hidden ability to see things before they happen, making her a Visionary.
While Aisilinn tries to make sense of what is happening to her she meets the handsome Sebastian, a fellow Visionary, who introduces Aislinn to other Visionaries. Sebastian shows Aislinn the ropes and saves her from precarious situations, including the secret agency, whose soul mission is to terminate all visionaries.
Aislinn soon learns that she also has a spirit animal that can provide her with exceptional gifts and abilities. A Visionary can have one of twelve spirit animals based on their zodiac. However, Aislinn may have one of the three the rare spirit animals, the Red-tailed Hawk, which makes her future unpredictable and possibly immortal.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
For some of the character’s names in this book I looked at meanings and origins. The main character’s name was the most important to me.
For example, the name Aislinn, means vision or dream and its origin is Irish. I fell in love with the name Aislinn the first time I found it.
And Sebastian means venerable which describes him. I also find this Greek name to be uncommon and attractive.
And Caleb means faithful or bold and brave depending on the origin of choice.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
I enjoyed writing the protagonist, Aislinn because I really wanted to make her sound and feel like a typical sixteen year old girl. Aislinn goes back and forth with her feelings about being a visionary. Some may think she’s flaky but really she’s being herself. Most teenagers aren’t sure of who they are at this tender age. It is a time for self-discovery and growth. I took all of this into consideration when developing her character and found that her choices and feelings on being a visionary are very realistic.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I have an idea of how I want the characters personalities to be, but for the most part I pretty much just let the characters tell their story.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
I definitely enjoy the first meeting of Aislinn and Sebastian. It’s the beginning of a possible blooming romance and who doesn’t like that?
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
This world is made out to be very realistic. When Aislinn discovers that she has this new incredible gift, she realizes that this world of Visionaries has always existed but she just wasn’t able to see it until now. And now she’s a part of it!
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
This trilogy should be read in order. The story builds and many things uncover in each book.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
I do love food and ice cream in particular so I wanted to incorporate that love into Aislinn a little bit especially with the ice cream scene and in regards to the Coffee Beanery and restaurants. I wanted her to be a young girl who wasn’t afraid to eat in front of the opposite sex.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
Ice-cream, writing, and reality shows- there I said it- I feel better now, thank you!
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I love cooking (even when it doesn’t come out quite right), hiking, reading, writing, laughing and being silly!
What can readers expect next from you?
I hope to have book 2 of the Visionary Trilogy released by late summer.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
“So, how are you enjoying your gift, Aislinn?” he snares as he sits down on the wooden desk beside me carefully placing his cup of coffee on the table.
He has an accent that I simply cannot place. It sounds like a European accent of some sort.
I am immediately nauseated by the stench that radiates from his body. It smells like a combination of cigarettes and liquor. I was never much for the smoker type. It has always been a big turn off for me. I can’t stand the way smoke lingers in people’s hair and clothes. It’s just gross.
“My what? What gift?” I ask attempting to look sincere and confused.
“Don’t play with me. I know that you have it. I just want to know how you are enjoying it?” he retorts in an angry tone.
He’s toying with me like a little puppet. He’s trying to break me and I will not be broken. Stay strong, I remind myself. He moves closer to me and picks up a few strands of my hair. He brushes the hair gracefully under his nose. Did he just smell my hair?
I maintain my composure. I start rambling, hoping to change the subject.
“Mmm,” he grumbles in reference to my hair.
“I really don’t know what you’re talking about and it’s getting very late. I have to get home. I don’t want my mother to start looking for-”
The man instantly cuts me off and obnoxiously bangs the table three times with his powerful fists. He knocks his coffee over with his barbaric tantrum. His anger causes me to jump fearing that he might strike me next.
“She’s sleeping,” he says with a sinister smile.
I quickly and worriedly ask, “How do you know that?”
He snaps, “I ask the questions and you answer them! Got it! Aislinn Lee Murphy of five Hunter Ridge Lane!”
What? He knows my address. I lower my head and begin to question myself. Can I do this? I don’t know how to handle this. I’m just a girl. I say nothing in return. He knows too much.
He gets up and grabs a manila envelope from one of the men standing at the doorway and takes out what appears to be black and white photos.
“You want to play do you? Look here!” he screams.
Thank you for this super fun interview. It has been my pleasure!
