The Jinn
Many
people are aware of angels and demons. But how many recognize a Jinn?
In my novel Covenant and
its prequel Archon, one of my favorite characters, Troy, is a Jinn. In the
fictional universe I've created, she is a female of her race named after the
illustrious Jinn city decimated by angels and demons long ago. Her kind are descendants
of angelic offspring deemed imperfect and thrown down to Hell to fend for
themselves. Gradually, they evolved into dwellers of darkness with predatory
tendencies.
Like most other Jinn, Troy has chalk-pale skin, sharp
teeth and nails, large sickle-shaped black wings, phosphorescent eyes, and
elfin ears. But unlike many of her kind, she longs for a different life for her
people. One without the savagery and starvation that have tragically ended up
defining her race.
In our real world, Jinn
are beings of Islamic belief. They are not angels or demons, but something else
entirely, and are said to inhabit a dimension only one step away from ours.
They are known to be fickle and dangerous to deal with.
Some Jinn are very much like our image of demons, and
are truly evil. Others are good and enjoy helping people and communicating with
them. Over the past few decades more and more people throughout the world have
claimed to see 'shadow people'--ghost-like beings that look like living pitch-black
shadows with glowing red eyes. These shadow people are said to be intensely
interested in human lives and activities, but are rather shy and don't like
being noticed or seen. Once again, some are claimed to be harmless, while
others give off auras of terrifying evil. More than a few individuals in the
paranormal field have brought up the strange parallels to these 'shadow people'
and the Islamic Jinn.
Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction. But
every author has to get inspired somewhere.
Have you ever encountered a shadow person? A Jinn?
If you have, I hope that I don't have psychic author
powers I'm unaware of. I certainly wouldn't wish Troy in one of her fickle
moods on anybody. Troy isn't evil, but she can darned well scare the living
daylights out of you. For a taste of what she's like when you tick her off,
check out Chapter Zero of Covenant, where she has a close encounter with a
half-human cousin who's unluckily earned her distaste.
And remember: apparently, just like Troy, real-life Jinn
and shadow people don't like light.
It never hurts to keep that flashlight handy.
