Interview With Cornelia Amiri Mother's Day Magic Box Set

An Interview With Cornelia Amiri
Bestselling Author and Queen of Celtic Romance

The Story I’ve Contributed Is I Love You More

On turning sixty, Garland recalls memories of her life’s journey from an abusive childhood to a bad marriage to the ups and downs of a single mom. She is rewarded with a magical mother’s day with her loving family.

What Was The Inspiration For Your Mother’s Day Magic Story?

A good deal was drawn from my own experiences as a single mother. I think most moms, especially single moms, can relate to it. There are a lot of families that are headed by women, sometimes just one mom and her child, but they are still families in every sense of what a family means. I wanted to acknowledge these strong, loving single moms and the wonderful children they are raising or have raised. They’re doing a great job.

How much research was involved in writing your story? How did you go about it

Because it was contemporary and set where I live, I really didn’t have to do much research. That’s unusual for me, most books I write require a great deal of research.

How often do your characters surprise you by doing or saying something totally unexpected?

In every book, there are moments when that happens. It’s one of the things I look forward to when I’m writing the first draft.

Do you miss spending time with your characters when you finish writing this story?

I will think of my characters forever. Certain ones are very close to my heart.  My characters are part of me. In an emotional sense, they will always be alive to me.

What writer has been your biggest inspiration?

Morgan Llewellyn and Marion Zimmer Bradley are my strongest inspirations. Marion Zimmer Bradley wrote fantasies, Morgan Llewellyn writes historicals, and I write romances, but like them, I use historical knowledge and realistic fantasy that pulls from the ancient Celtic belief system.

What non-writer had the most influence on your life And why?

The Celtic Warrior Queen Boudica is a main one, she made me start writing. I love history, and in reading a book about the dark ages, I came across Boudica. I was so inspired, I started jotting down notes, but they were fiction (it-must-have-happened-like-this type). Before I knew it, I had written a novel. I thought, gosh I can really do this. So after accidentally writing that novel, I wrote one on purpose, The Celtic Fox, which turned out to be my first published book.

How important is the choosing of character names to you? Have you ever decided on a name and then changed it because it wasn’t right for the character?

The character names are important and yes I have changed them. Garland and Judson seemed the right names for the characters. When I write stories set in the bronze age or iron age, I have to try to find ancient Celtic names. When I wrote about the Picts, I could only find one authentic female Pict name, Bethoc, so that was the name of my heroine in The Scottish Selkie, there was no other name for her. However, it worked out perfect, because no other name would suit my Bethoc, her name was clearly meant to be Bethoc.

Do you allow others to read your work in progress, or do you keep it a secret until you’ve finished your first draft?

No one reads the first draft but me. When I have it polished enough to show my critique partners, then they see it. I send it to my editor when I feel I’ve done all I can for it. I don’t show it to anyone else until it’s published or submitted to a publisher.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I had an idea for a plot in my head that was inspired by the fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, with the dwarfs. But nothing much more than the plot idea. I was working as a file clerk at the time, and one day I was having an allergic reaction to dust. I closed my eyes to get a grip and in my head I saw the face of this man with reddish brown eyes and thick auburn hair, he reminded me of a red fox. Suddenly, the plot I had been kicking around had a hero and a title, The Fox Prince. I later changed the title to The Celtic Fox.

What might we be surprised to know about you?

That along with the romances, I sometimes try my hand at other genres. I wrote a contemporary mystery called Dead End Job, a horror story called Taliesin’s Song, a Young Adult fantasy, non-romance, called Samhain Calls, and a modern-day, non-romance fantasy called The Ghost Lights of Marfa. The later is published by itself, and the other three are in book called, Reach…Reach across the genres.

Felt by the Heart by Angela Ford
#1 Bestselling, Amazon Top 50 and Award-Winning Author
Rachel fiftieth birthday approached, the forever she found with Ryan ended with heartache. And for her daughter, the second chance of having a dad. Will Rachel find the strength to rebuild her life and her daughter's?

Excerpt:

“Rachel, my darling angel, how is your heart? Is what I mean.”

Her eyes drifted toward him, she smiled and hid her emotions as she usually did.

“It’s good too.”

Allan patted her on the back and walked toward the oven as the timer beeped.

“Someday, someday, my dear angel; you will have to talk to someone. If you continue to keep it all bottled up and ignore your emotions, your heart will never heal.”

Words of wisdom came from his heart. Rachel knew it. She appreciated her dear friend and knew he was right. Life had been so busy over the past six months; she hardly had the time to think about it. For the most part he was right; she ignored the matters of her heart. She left her marriage, her best friend, and her daughter suffered from yet one more broken family; among other stressors as a teenager, her son left for Toronto and she had started her own business. Her days had been filled with sorrow, happiness, success, and confusion all at once. She had not heard from Ryan. Some days she wondered if he had moved, was drinking himself into oblivion, or if he simply wanted to avoid her. Rachel never did reply to his last email. So many times she’d thought about it, but the hurt she felt in her heart kept her from doing so. She attempted but would hit the delete button. Each time she tried, tears formed and made her stop. At that point, so much time had passed; it only confirmed that it was over for them. Their forever had disappeared. His hurtful words of “wasted time” still lingered in her heart.
*****

She had made her decision and was going to live with it. It was a great price for peace in her life, and for her kids.

She grabbed her coffee and headed to the sunroom. She looked up when she heard Brooke. Sleepily she said good morning and told her mom she was starving. For such a small framed girl, she could eat.

“Come join me for breakfast, Mom. I don’t want to eat alone.”

Rachel heard her slippers drag across the hardwood floors, still half-asleep. She chuckled inside. Her daughter was just so darn cute and confident at the same time. The invitation was time with her daughter and that was priceless. It would also distract her from the thoughts that raced through her mind.

“Right behind you, sweetie.”

Brooke’s idea of making breakfast was two bowls, the box of Fruit Loops and a gallon of milk. Rachel smiled. It wouldn’t matter what they had to eat. Their time together was the best gift. Brooke always loved her Fruit Loops. Rachel envisioned her daughter across the table as a five-year-old eating them. Treasured memories she held dear in her heart.

Garland recalls memories of her life’s journey from an abusive childhood to a bad marriage to the ups and downs of a single mom. She’s rewarded with a magical mother’s day with her loving family.

Excerpt:

She woke, changed Judson’s diaper and put him in his walker. Then she threw on a t-shirt and jeans and headed into the kitchen.
Her husband stood by the counter, drinking a cup of coffee. “I’m going to take a walk and get a newspaper from the little store,” he said.
“Okay. You’re not going to take the car?”
“No. I need to walk.”
Samuel left and Garland let out a sigh of relief. This was her chance to leave with the baby. She couldn’t help but think how ironic it was that today was Mother’s Day.
Her mind flashed back to earlier that week, when she got home from work, and stepped inside her apartment, her husband had smacked her in the face.
She recalled he’d yelled, “Where have you been?”
She’d still been reeling, trying to get her bearings. He’d never hit her before. She didn’t’ know what was going on. “I had to work overtime, I called and told you. What’s wrong?”
“The baby was crying for you and you weren’t here. You were at work with your boss.”
“Not my boss, a co-worker. The boss went home at the same time he always does.”

He slapped her again and again. Finally, he stopped and walked away into the family room.

Two Hearts Unspoken by Tamara Ferguson
#1 Bestselling and Multi-Award Winning Author of TRR Readers' Choice Award
Retired air force captain and wounded warrior, Zach Logan, discovers that his scars are more than skin deep, when he falls in love with Beth Bowen; the lovely single mother of an autistic son.

Excerpt From Zach: As A Wounded Warrior

Zach grinned at the thought, stepping out from the shower—until he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror across the room. Studying the puckering scars and the mangled skin covering much of his torso, along with the skin over his lower back and buttocks, his frown was fierce as he stared at his naked body in the mirror. The first of the series of skin graft operations had begun—not so much to make his appearance presentable, but to increase the flexibility of his skin, while decreasing the amount of pain and discomfort in the future. There was a lot of heavy scar tissue covering his torso and upper arm, along with some more extensive scarring running down one of his thighs.
What in the hell had he been thinking, earlier today? Sure, the burns only covered about twenty percent of his body—it could’ve been a heck of a lot worse. His face had been saved—although there was still a lot of scarring covering his neck and the underside of his chin. But looking at himself in the mirror, he couldn’t help thinking—what female would even want him, the way he looked now? His chest was a mess, all wrinkled and mangled, with the hair on his chest beginning to grow back in spotty patches. And one of his nipples was barely recognizable. He couldn’t even stand looking at himself. What’d made him think he could ever expose any woman to the horror of his naked body the way it was right now?
Quit feeling sorry for yourself, you idiot,” he muttered out loud. “Luke lost his limb, saving your life, and his burns were a hell of lot worse than yours. You don’t see him feeling sorry for himself.”
Zach smiled wryly, still staring at himself in the mirror. At least his anatomy was still in working order.
But what kind of woman would ever want to make love to a guy like him?
He took in a long, deep breath. Beth? Something weird had happened to him, when he’d seen her standing alone and isolated on the beach at Dragonfly Pointe. She’d reminded him a little of himself—at peace, but not quite whole—as if she was searching for something elusive—something… Hmm—Zach supposed unspoken would be the right word to call what was definitely undefinable.
What a chore it must be, raising that kid of hers. The dedication, the time involved was inconceivable.

December Roses by Daisy Banks
Bestselling Author
A present day gift of flowers sets off delightful memories for Jean. The recollections of the day love first bloomed, and trust overcoming a frightening challenge, are carved deep into her heart.

Excerpt:

Smiling, she walked with him and clung closer on his arm than she ever had, except for the secret end-of-evening kisses they’d shared. They passed a couple of fishermen at the riverside and paused to watch a set of swans gliding downstream on the smooth water. “This is such a peaceful place.”
“Look,” Jack whispered, nodding toward a low branch that hung over the riverside edge. “A kingfisher.”
She caught the stunning flash of gem-bright wings as the bird dived into the river. “Beautiful.”
Jack turned to look at her full on. “So are you. I ought to tell you every day.”

Her heart thumped so loud he might well hear it.

EXCERPT
“I ain’t got no pants!” Andy bellowed. It was about five minutes until a carpool mom was scheduled to pick him up and drive him to school. My 7-year-old brother stood there wearing a t-shirt, underwear, and space helmet. I was torn between helping Andy find his pants and heading to the bus stop to catch my own ride to school. It was May, and the school year was coming to a close. Year-end assignments were due and I was working on several events still in the planning stage. Year-end events that signalled change since, in the fall, I’d be off to St. Theresa’s High School. At 13, I wasn’t all that good at handling change. It’s still not one of my favourite things even now, in my 30s. That’s especially true if change comes as a surprise or brings bad news. The summer between Middle School and High School was about to deliver surprisingly bad news.
“Mom, Andy’s not dressed,” I shouted, just as my mother came dashing down the hall. “Eau-du-peanut butter” preceded her. In monster hair curlers and a paisley, jersey house dress, she had been in the kitchen hovering over slices of bread laid out like cards for a game of solitaire. I had grabbed one of the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches she was making for our lunches. Not those neat little sandwiches with the crust removed and sliced on the diagonal. Madeline Powers, Maddie for short, made hearty sandwiches, bulging with peanut butter and grape jelly. The ingredients spilled out of the bread meant to contain them. Like Mom lived so much of her life—over the top and bursting at the seams.
“I don’t have any pants,” Mom said, correcting Andy’s sentence and emphasizing each word with the slash of a table knife covered in peanut butter. Raised in the South, her parents insisted she take elocution lessons. Mom’s voice only rarely revealed any hint of a southern drawl. She tried to pass along a penchant for precision in diction and grammar. Andy didn’t hear it or disregarded it. I’m not sure where he picked up that “ain’t” he slid in there along with the double negative.

“You ain’t got no pants, neither? Oh no, now what are we going to do?” Andy smacked his head—his helmet, actually—in a dramatic gesture. Andy was a little over-the-top, like Mom. She laughed at her Cracker-Jack-prize-baby, as she called him. That was just one of her many momisms, as we referred to the words and phrases she made up, despite embracing her “grammar ninja” role as a right of motherhood. Born the year my mother turned forty, Andy had been one of those surprises I mentioned. Not a bad one, but one that brought sweeping change into all our lives. No one had been more surprised than my mother. In her twenties, she had struggled to get pregnant and carry a baby to full-term. Her perseverance paid off when she gave birth to my older sister, Sara, at 30 and me at thirty-two.

Vision of the Heart by Mary Crawford
#1 Bestselling Author African-American Romance
Facing vision loss is hard enough, but it’s causing Julia to question everything she knows about herself, a wife, a mother, and nurse. Can she handle a reunion when she’s a shadow of the person she once was?

Excerpt:

Smoothing down my skirt, and fidgeting in my chair, I wait for my friends to arrive. Alisha and I decided to arrive early so I could scope out the environment before anyone shows up. I asked the waitress to set me in the brightest corner of the restaurant. If the lighting’s right I can still make out large objects. We worked out a few other things too. She brings my lemonade in a dark colored glass to make it easier for me to spot on the table. My peripheral vision will help there. I must’ve set and reset the dark glass on the table more than a hundred times trying to calm my nerves.
Suddenly, my phone starts vibrating. So, I turn on my Bluetooth to hear the text message. It reads to me in a disembodied voice. It’s a message from Alisha, “Mom, relax— you’ve got this.”

I glanced to my left and sure enough there’s Alisha in a hot pink shirt. She’s always careful to clip her hair back on one side and place a brightly-colored hair accessory there. Since my vision has diminished to the point where I can only see large shapes, her funky adaptations makes it easier for me to spot her.

Excerpt:

“Come on gal,” I say to myself, “it’s not that difficult. You know the route, the roads and the stalls. How hard can it be?” Taking a deep breath for courage, I step down on to the pavement.
“Watch out luv! I nearly knocked you over,” a man’s voice shouts in my ear.
Turning in shock, my face starts to burn up with embarrassment. That’s not a good start. Only the first step and I’m in trouble. I can just make out the shape of a person, but he is sitting on a scooter or something. I tilt my head so I can see him better out of the corner of my eye.
“It’s a good job I’m not going fast”, he laughed, “I only travel at tortoise speed or I’d have bashed right into you.”
“I’m terribly sorry; I was in a world of my own. I just stepped down without thinking.” I know I’m gabbling*, but I’m flustered; all hot and bothered.
“No ‘arm done, luv, but you should be more careful. Don’t you use a white stick?”
“White stick? Why would I want a white stick*?” I was backing up to full height, tensing, preparing for flight or fight. “Who are you, anyway?”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you, luv”, he replied in a softer voice, “My name’s Bill. I live just down the road, in those new bungalows by the park. I couldn’t help but notice that you weren’t actually looking at me when you spoke. I realised you can’t see properly. My late wife, Lil, had lots of problems with her eyes, so I recognise the look. She never used her white stick either. Always complained that it was humiliating and degrading, letting other people know she couldn’t see.”
“I don’t like the white stick either. I understand what she meant. It’s like surrendering to the enemy, waving a white flag. If I don’t use it, no one will know and I can carry on and pretend all is okay with the world. Sorry for snapping at you, Bill. What happened to your wife, Lil?”
“Got hit by a bus.”
“Oh my God!”

Bill burst out laughing. “Sorry, only joking. Your face was a picture! No, she actually passed away peacefully during her sleep, nearly a year ago now. I miss her like crazy, but life goes on. Talking of which, if you’re heading down the street I can drive alongside you, be your eyes. I can go at your pace, so don’t worry about keeping up with me. I’m not in any hurry, the day’s my own.”

Excerpt:

Your father was dead.
Duncan Wayland died the same year you were born; he was only nineteen at the time. Mabel said his death rocked the town to its core and nearly every single person in Langford showed up for his funeral. It was anti-climactic and saddening but you didn't let that stop you. This was the era of technology, where you could get information at the tip of your finger, regarding this stranger who shared half of your DNA.
So you scoured the internet for records or images from the year of the accident, hoping to find something, anything that would better piece the story together. You wanted, no, you needed, every minuscule detail. Too bad there was nothing online about Duncan.  Knowing about his life and death may have been vital to you but unless he was a celebrity or historic figure, in the long run, he would have been a fleeting blip on the computer screen of long lasting news.
The glaring sunlight streaming through Dora's stuffy living room window faded down to a warm orange glow as the sun set signifying an end to the day's interviews. She asked you to stay for supper, her voice was almost pleading, so you reluctantly agreed. That night you dined on overcooked pot roast with under cooked carrots and potatoes on the side. Each bite took five minutes of deliberate chewing to be able to swallow it down with a cold glass of lemonade but Dora did continue talking, sharing more details of a young Mallory and Veronica in her heyday.
"I remember one time, I went over to deliver a party invitation and Mallory was scrubbing the floor of the entry way. I remember it clear as day. Marble flooring with intricate designs all over it. Anyway, she was just scrubbing away with a tooth brush just like Cinderella! She kept her head down the entire time but you could still see little droplets of water dripping on the ground. It was either sweat pouring or tears falling, I couldn't tell."

The Illusion of Happiness by Neva Squires Rodriquez
Divorced and having lived under the illusion of happiness, for 30+yrs, Graciela struggles to find strength. With her fiftieth birthday and Mother’s Day weekend approaching, a surprise visit helps put things into prospective.

Excerpt:

“Mom, you weren’t okay with it.” Rosalyn said. “I remember sitting at the top of the stairs and watching you crying for hours as you sat on the sofa looking through old picture albums. You might not have thought you were a strong person for putting up with daddy, but the fact that you dealt with him and with all of us children to spare us from having to change our lifestyle made you super mom in my eyes. I can only hope that one day I’m as strong as you and that my girls will look up to me the way I look up to you as one of the most incredible role models that ever lived.”

The Day Before Eclosion by Adrienne Ruvalcaba
Sharon's daughter, Gracie, is moving out. What should be an exciting transition is complicated by Gracie's disability. Can Sharon learn to accept Gracie's need for autonomy before irreparable damage is done to their relationship?

Excerpt:

Sharon had no idea how to reason with her daughter on this matter. How could she tell her that an ability to perform the practical tasks associated with daily living did not mean that she had the cognitive ability to meaningfully engage in complex emotional relationships? How could she even begin to go about explaining such a thing? Gracie probably had no concept of the idea that a young man could want to pay attention to her for the sole purpose of sleeping with her and then moving on to the next girl before things got too serious. Gracie equated feelings of love and attraction with marriage and stability, not with dating and having fun as other people her age did.
Carefully, Sharon approached Gracie and sat next to her on the picnic bench. "He'll never marry me now," Gracie said in a whisper that broke Sharon's heart.
She refrained from telling her daughter that twenty-two year old college boys rarely ever had marriage on their minds when they kissed girls.
After Martin returned home, he managed to convince Gracie to spend the night in her old bedroom. The happy, smiling young woman who had helped with dinner multiple times over the last few weeks had been replaced by a sullen, heartbroken person whom Sharon did not recognize. The niggling feeling that she might have done something wrong tickled at the fringes of her consciousness as she went through her entire night time routine. It wasn't until she got in bed and turned out the lights that the magnitude of her actions fully occurred to her.
The next morning, she padded out to the living room to find that Gracie was gone. Before leaving, she had taken the time to write a note and leave it taped to Sharon's computer screen.
"I am HUMILEATED!" the note read.

Sharon's eyes skimmed over the misspelled word several times before she broke down in tears. What had she done?

The Light We Found by Q.D. Purdu
1st Place Romance—2014 Texas Writers' League
Calla has survived divorce and developed a crush on Ben, the special guy in her dance class. Life is rocking until her ex confesses a long-hidden betrayal, and Ben reveals the most hurtful secret of all.

Excerpt:
As always happens when I’m near him, I start inhaling more deeply. Some rebellious part of me is desperate to draw him in, even if it’s only the warm, masculine scent of him. The beating pulse at the base of his neck is a magnet for my attention. What would it feel like to place my hand there…or my lips? I guiltily allow my eyes to close while I get lost in the sensations he triggers in my body.
He reached for my hand. “But with you there’s a light I haven’t had before. It doesn’t diminish my life with Amy. But it’s special….different…”
I squeezed his hand as he trailed off, and I finished his sentence: “It’s the light we found just for us.”
The music starts. I’m in the moment. Our movement together is more than the sum of the dance pattern and aligned notes. His lead, his touch, his scent are richer than foreplay.
I read softly, “It’s not my dead dad. It’s that I killed him and my mother let me do it. She could have stopped me, and she didn’t do anything. But if she had stopped me, I’d be dead instead of him. And I’m glad that he’s the dead one instead of me.
Silence blankets the room. Cody’s thin body, all angles and knobs, tenses as if he’s holding a hundred-pound weight on his back.

I love to travel, but I also need to work. Being an author allows me to combine both of activities and has the added bonus of life being an adventure. I never know where I will be sitting writing from one year to the next. As I write this, I am in Africa, in spring I travel to Europe for a few months and later in the year to the USA and Canada. It is a great life, if you don’t mind a little insecurity.

I try to bring a little of my adventurous personality into my stories. Being a 'mature aging gracefully' woman, I feel akin to the problems of aging and relationships. I spent many years on my own before finding my truly remarkable and very patient partner who I happily gave up my whole world for. My stories are about mature relationships with mature people. People who have character and humour, who have a history; people just like us.

After spending most of her life in New York City, Tamara Philip decided to let love lead her on an international adventure, where she's met many amazing people and ate entirely too much. Tamara and her English-born Husband, Chris, now split their time between the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago.

Writing has been her secret passion since childhood. Quirky female leads are her trademark.
On any given day you can find Tamara telling people what to do, dodging adulthood, and working hard on her next novel.

Other works by Tamara Philip are The Trouble with Playing Cupid, The Trouble with Romance and two holiday short stories, Romancing the Grinch and This Season...Have Love/Have Faith with fellow author, Neva Squires Rodriguez.

Neva Squires-Rodriguez was born and raised in a neighborhood located on the North Side of Chicago. Mother, Wife, Expert at multitasking, when she’s not writing newspaper columns or finishing up her latest novel, she is dispatching calls for her city’s 911 center. Perhaps this is what helps Neva create electrifying stories with a twist.

Neva Squires-Rodriguez earned her Bachelor’s Degree from American Military University (APUS/AMU) and her Master’s Degree from National University, a feat which she worked very hard to obtain and says she will work even harder to pay off.

She claims to be a typical American, full of dreams that will hopefully get her to a more comfortable lifestyle one day. She says, "God has a plan and I will follow wherever it is that He takes me."

Adrienne D'nelle Ruvalcaba was born and raised in Southeast Texas. After high school, she joined the U.S. Army and served four years at Fort Campbell, KY. After her army days, and one failed attempt at marriage, she and her two children relocated so that she could enroll in the Engineering program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. While there, she completed her Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in structural analysis. Also while at SIU, she was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. This diagnosis significantly changed her life.

Since the onset of SLE, she has learned a lot about those close to her and even more about herself. After a few years of struggling to accept lupus as part of her life, she has come to a more peaceful place, and no longer lets her disease define who she is.

Adrienne has had a love of writing since grade school, and she often takes solace in the many worlds she creates in her imagination. She writes women's fiction and romance, and her books are meant purely for emotional fulfilment, enjoyment, and sweet escapism. Real life is difficult enough, and she believes that we all need a little break from it sometimes.
