The demon is not what she expected. Elita is soon swept up in his power… and her own.

Renata

The residents of the sleepy little town of Flushing, Michigan had no idea a vampire lived among them, seducing and drinking from all the men in town. She had no way of knowing he was a vampire hunter and was there for her.

Sea of Blood

Liana made Nerissa a vampire centuries ago in the islands of Greece but she’s never tired of her companion or the way she hunts her prey.

Book 1: The Community: Existence

This first book in a new series finds Forsythea Daniels as she has just left her simple life in the small town of Lake George, N.Y. to start anew on Long Island as a freelance photographer for a local newspaper. While on her first crime scene she meets a man named Edric, who saves her life more than once; but is this man her savior or a part of something else; something that has learned to survive over the centuries? The Community lives in the shadows and the human population pretends it does not exist. But as Forsythea is about to discover, there are indeed things that go bump in the night, and she has fallen in love with one of them.

Edric has rules within his Community, rules that have thus far kept them safe and out of the light of the human world. But when child vampires begin to mysteriously show up around the town he has no other choice but to step in and find out who has gone against their code. When he meets Forsythea, he feels the demon inside of him struggling to be set free and possess her. Can he keep in control of his humanity, or will he allow his darker side to take over?

Book 2: The Community: Lunar Attacks

In the second volume we meet Jonathan, who has come a long way to find his ex-fiance Thea; and he has a terrifying agenda in place for their reunion. Forsythea is just starting to get used to the idea of the existence of vampires, that is, until she goes to photograph her first murder case and sees the horrific mauling of a young woman. That's when she realizes that there are worse things out there in the night besides her new lover Edric and his Community.

Coming Spring 2011

Please Welcome New Author Sarah Gilman

Please welcome new author Sarah Gilman to Fang-tastic Books today. Her novel Out In Blue will be released by Entangled publishing this November. If anyone is interested in hosting Sarah at their site please contact me, I am her Entangled publicist.

Demons and archangels fill the pages of my debut novel, Out in Blue, an affectionate paranormal romance set on a dark and violent backdrop. For the most part, I developed the world without the influence of research and let my imagination arrange the details. But one figure familiar to both the secular and the religious inspired the groundwork for more than one character in the novel: the archangel Raphael. One character, the hero’s father, retains the name.

Angels as a whole are popular the world over. Independent of culture or age, many people find angels fascinating. Angels grew from their religious roots and became a part of the human psyche.

The archangel Raphael is known in general as an angel of healing and is often depicted with the ability to spontaneously heal humans. Because Out in Blue’s archangels are very humanized, I had a lot of fun developing Raphael as a character, fleshing out his personality and mannerisms. Coffee or tea? Tea. Short or even tempered? Very even, unless his family is threatened. What would he name his son? Wren. Would he be a distant or an affectionate father? Highly affectionate.

Also interesting for me was the development of the novel’s hero as a man who grew up with the archangel Raphael as a father. How would such a parent influence a child, both positively and negatively? As an adult, what would be the biggest differences between Wren and his father? And of course, how would these issues affect the romance between Wren and the heroine? These questions were difficult to answer, and I stumbled a lot in the first draft. But everything came together, and I’m very pleased with the results. I can’t wait for Wren’s story to reach readers. Many thanks to Roxanne hosting this guest post today!

Interview and Giveaway with Eliza Gayle

Welcome to Fang-tastic Books, Eliza. Let’s get started by learning more about you, what would you like to tell us about yourself?

I’m an avid reader and writer of paranormal romance with a crazy love for shapeshifters and witches. That’s not to say I don’t love other paranormal creatures as well because I do, but I think shifters and witches are my favorites. Now if we get into a discussion on fantasy then we’d be talking about faeries and dragons. J I like my romances extra spicy and I think my writing reflects that with some scorching hot scenes that fling that bedroom door wide open.

What was your first published work?

My first published work was a fantasy ménage between a witch, a faery and a dragon titled Taken by Tarot. I love my faery world and hope to revisit it again soon. Unfortunately, Taken by Tarot is currently out of print but is being revamped and will reemerge later this year bigger and better than ever.

Tell us about your current book?

Malcolm, the third in my Black Cougar series is my latest release. The series has followed the three shapeshifting Gunn brothers through family politics, love, sexual exploits, and a mating call that can’t be denied. Now it’s bad boy Malcolm’s turn. Here’s the blurb.

He can run be he can’t hide. Not from duty. Not from danger. And especially not from the woman who forces him to face the truth.

Malcolm Gunn’s time is running out along with his ability to shift. When confronted with his past he thinks he’s found a solution. With the help of a little rope, he can let nature takes its course. Unfortunately the woman who is the key to his existence harbors a powerful secret that will destroy them both.

Cheyenne’s been hired to track and retrieve Malcolm at any cost. Her only plan is to get in, get out and keep her sanity intact. In that order. But she’s been warned…If he catches her, he will stake his claim whether she is willing or not.

Deceit and lies bring them together. Murder puts them on the run. Their enemies are closing in and there’s only one, irreversible way out. Some choices can never be forgiven and one man’s anger can destroy it all…Malcolm.

Can you give us a little glimpse into the book, perhaps a part of one of your favorite scenes?

There are so many favorite scenes to choose from but it’s really hard to pick one that doesn’t involve one of the many twists I’d rather keep secret—for now.

I do however love the opening chapters and the immediate clashing these two characters go through. Here’s a brief snippet of one such scene.

“Looking for me?”

He whirled at the sultry voice behind him in time for her to deliver a kick to his stomach, catching him off balance and sending him flying backward to sprawl on the floor. Air whooshed from his lungs and his head cracked against the hard floors. Pain exploded in his head, little shards of sharp, burning sensations that took hold for several long seconds before clearing.

Stunned that she’d snuck up on him, he groped for his bearings. The little minx took full advantage of his delay and pounced on top of him, straddling his legs with her own. He didn’t even see the knife until she had it pressed to his throat and dangerously close to his jugular.

“What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?”

Malcolm slowly dragged the air back into his lungs and wondered what kind of crazy bitch she’d turned into. The power emanating from her came soaked in strength without even a whiff of fear. For a second or two, he felt frozen in time. This woman looked nothing like the Chey he remembered. This woman had obviously trained and his instincts screamed she would not be an easy fight. Interesting.

Her white blonde hair was tied up in a braid but a few strands had come loose and curled around her face. His fingers itched to brush them from her cheeks. With the anger in her eyes and the stern shape of her mouth, she reminded him more of the women from his clan than ever. In an act of aggression, she bore resemblance to the cougar more than ever.

“My tongue’s just fine, Chey. Want to find out?”

What are you working on now?

I am currently working on a new witch book that I started a while back and hope to finish soon. It involves a witch having to turn to a warlock for some very creative lessons in controlling her new magic. Fun Fun!

What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

Most readers are pretty surprised when they find out I’m a former Marine. (although there are no former Marines really, just Marines.)

I loved my time in the Marine Corps and will forever treasure the training and memories of those years. I also met my husband in the Marines so that’s a special bond we’ve shared for twenty years now.

Just for fun lightning round:

Black or white - Black

Red or pink - Red

Angels or Demons - Demons

Vampires or werewolves - werewolves

Coke or Pepsi - definitely Coke

Coffee or tea - Sweet Tea (I’m a southern girl.)

Wine, beer or mixed drinks - mixed drinks.

Casual or Formal - Casual

Backyard barbeque or gourmet meals - Backyard Barbeque

Paperback, hardcover, or digital - digital all the way!

Where can your book be found for sale?

My book is currently available in digital format at most booksellers. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, All Romance, and soon Sony, the iBookstore and Kobo. It will also be available in paperback August 1st.

If readers would like to learn more about you where can they find you on the web?

I’m never far from Twitter or Facebook and my website has lots of info and goodies on it at http://elizagayle.net

Lee Mather Talks About The Green Man

What’s in an Intro?

I am something of a novice when it comes to writing—I have a couple of stories published and I keep a blog and a website updated—that’s it. No great shakes in the grand scheme of things. But I have a passion for writing, for stories in general and it feels like writing has woken something in me. My latest story is a supernatural horror, The Green Man, published by Damnation Books. It is available to buy as an e-book from Amazon.co.uk. It tackles themes such as family, grief and faith. Real issues we deal with on a daily basis.

Reviews of my work have, so far, been kind, and long may this continue, but I’m still very much at a stage in my career where I’m shaping my voice and trying to improve as a writer. One of the focus areas for new writers in particular is the introduction to a story.

The introduction is pivotal. Firstly it sets the scene for the reader and encourages them to turn the page and keep reading. Secondly if the introduction is no good then a publisher is unlikely to read further and the story will take its place in whichever slush pile is closest, doomed never to see the light of day.

Below is the introduction to The Green Man. I have annotated my thought process, dissecting how and why I constructed the scene as I did. Hopefully I achieved what I set out to do. You be the judge.

***

This is not a story I have told easily; in fact, I have never spoken about it to anyone before tonight. It’s late, midnight almost, and I’ve been sitting here for over an hour, poised in the dark of my study, without a clue where to start. My heart beats quickly, my hands tremble. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. Too much happened that day, and even the eight years that have passed have not been enough to heal me. (a)

I sigh and reach past the clutter of my desk: a sleeping laptop, a charging phone, a mix of papers ranging from VAT receipts to Evie’s latest report card. I pick up the chewed pen I’ve spied trapped beneath the debris and hesitate. Maybe this story should be told face-to-face, but I’m still not ready to look someone in the eye and speak what’s on my mind. That is why I’ve chosen to write it down the old-fashioned way. This is the most human form of expression I can cope with.

There is further method in this madness. Hannah bought me this notebook, some years ago, after Doctor Adams told me that it might help me to start a journal. I never did. In fact, I ended my sessions with him not long after, so it remained blank save for a private message handwritten by my wife on the inside cover. These thoughts don’t belong alongside anything else. I gently rub my fingers across the neat curves of her handwriting in search of the strength to begin. Without her knowing it, her connection to these pages helps me. She is my crutch. I breathe a heavy sigh, and the sound is exaggerated against the eerie quiet of the house. Pen touches paper. (b)

Some context will help you before I continue. Faith had never been something that came easily to me. I grew up in the eighties, part of the cynical MTV generation that questions and derides. I believed in nothing for a long time, no God, no Heaven. Those who did, I thought, were naïve. When you die, that’s the end, was my philosophy. But this was no way to live. In times of grief I was hopeless. I wished I could lose myself in the comfort of knowing there would be something better waiting for me and my loved ones someday. But I couldn’t. Scepticism was ingrained in my nature, and I suspect I was like many people of a similar age, a product of the time. (c)

Why now, you might ask? To answer simply, my daughter Evie has prompted me to sit here in the gloom. My tumult, buried deep over the years, has started to surface. It began two days ago when she came home from school and questioned me about Heaven.

“How do we really know it exists, Daddy?”

“Will we be in Heaven together when we die, you, Mummy and me?”

“If you’re already there, how will you know it’s me, I mean when I die? What if you don’t recognize me? Will I be alone?”

She is getting older, too quickly for my liking, and it seems that with every day she loses another piece of her innocence. Her ever-sharpening mind is quite capable of forming opinions these days, and my word alone no longer seems to satisfy her.

“What do you mean, Daddy? How do you know?”

That is my quandary. How do I explain faith to a child old enough to see through me when I’m not sure of the truth? That’s why I am here. I need to make enough sense of my thoughts so that I can look my daughter in the eye and reassure her about life and death. My problem is that my journey is not something a rational man can easily explain, even to himself. (d)

Strangely, as I think back, the pen tight in my hand, the last remnants of steam drifting from the top of my quickly cooling coffee, it is the ending I remember clearest. Blue is the color I see, not green. It is the flashing blue lights on top of the police car that mesmerize me. The tangle of pain and confusion I feel is like nothing I have ever previously experienced, and I feel hopelessly alone. In that frozen moment in time, I am lost.

A policeman approaches me, grim faced. His jacket collar is pulled up as high as it will go to keep the rain out. I stand motionless in front of him, my saturated T-shirt clinging to my flesh.

“Mr. Jones, can I ask you a couple of questions?” he says dourly.

I stare through him with so many unanswered questions of my own. The stretcher passes me and I cannot bear to look at it. For the first time in my life I am certain that my mother’s premonition was true.

I believe in the Green Man.

At that time, belief should have given me faith, but my grief was too fresh, my nerves too raw. It came later, as time helped to soften the edges. Earlier that day, things had been different. The plane crash changed everything. (e)

***

(a) I wanted the opening to be simple and punchy and to reinforce the dread in the protagonist. From the initial paragraph the scene is set that the story is a confessional told in the first person about a traumatic event that occurred in the past.

(b) The clutter of the desk represents the protagonist’s emotional confusion. The wife and daughter are introduced here and the importance the protagonist places on his family is shown. The importance of family is a theme central to the story, and I use it to create some sympathy for my lead character.

(c) Faith, or more precisely, the protagonist’s lack of it, is critical to both the story and the lead character’s arc, and this is introduced in this paragraph.

(d) This is a recognisable dilemma, a normal situation that hopefully a reader (particularly a parent) would empathise with. The paragraph’s last line subverts this, by revealing the protagonist’s dilemma as something not normal.

(e) The introduction comes to a close and I have attempted to quicken the pace, to create some urgency in the writing. Three crucial elements of the story are introduced here to set the scene. The premonition aspect, the hint that the end results in the death of someone important to the protagonist, and that a part of the story involves a plane crash.

The aim here is simple, for the reader to want to read the next chapter and beyond, to discover how the story ends…

A Review of Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend by Linda Wisdom

.5

Book Description:

A bewitching woman on a mission...

Feisty witch Maggie enjoys her work as a paranormal law enforcement officer-that is, until she's assigned to protect a teenager with major attitude and plenty of Mayan enemies. Maggie's never going to survive this assignment without the help of a half-fire demon who makes her smolder...

A hotter-than-sin hero with an agenda...

Declan is proprietor of an underground club and busy demon portal. No way he'll allow his demon race to be blamed for the malicious acts of some crazy evil Mayans. But he's already got his hands full when the sexy witch offers him a challenge he can't refuse...

My Review:

I was thrilled to learn that Linda's witchy Hex series would finally continue- with a bit of a makeover, a littler repackaging, a little rewriting maybe to give the books more of an urban feel along with a new series name- but it's still the witches we started with. The original group banished to the world so long ago that started with Jazz.

In this installment we get Maggie, the hardcore warrior. She works to bring justice to the world by keeping the bad guys in line. Now her assignment is to keep a teenager safe from Mayan demons- and to do this she has to enlist the help of a sexy man who happens to be half fire demon and let me tell you, Declan is hot, fiery hot, flaming hot...and it's not just because he's a fire demon :-) The chemistry he and Maggie have is hot too. So hot the pages may sizzle in your hands.

But the heat between them doesn't stop them from getting the job done, all with a little help from magic, an interesting cast of supporting characters and one wild little sidekick of a black widow spider who occasionally resides as a tattoo on Maggie's arm.

Demons are a Girl's Best Friend is a great book that'll keep you turning pages, full of magic, mayhem and sexiness along with a few fabulous splashes of humor- it's well worth reading. You'll easily want more of Linda's witches.

Review Hard Bitten By Chloe Neill

.5
4.5 Fangs for Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill

Product Description

"Neill creates a strong-minded, sharp-witted heroine who will appeal to fans of Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series and Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake." -Library Journal

Times are hard for newly minted vampire Merit. Ever since shapeshifters announced their presence to the world, humans have been rallying against supernaturals-and they're camping outside of Cadogan House with protest signs that could turn to pitchforks at any moment. Inside its doors, things between Merit and her Master, green-eyed heartbreaker Ethan Sullivan are...tense. But then the mayor of Chicago calls Merit and Ethan to a clandestine meeting and tells them about a violent vamp attack that has left three women missing. His message is simple: get your House in order. Or else.

Merit needs to get to the bottom of this crime, but it doesn't help that she can't tell who's on her side. So she secretly calls in a favor from someone who's tall, dark, and part of underground vamp group that may have some deep intel on the attack. Merit soon finds herself in the heady, dark heart of Chicago's supernatural society-a world full of vampires who seem ready to fulfill the protesting human's worst fears, and a place where she'll learn that you can't be a vampire without getting a little blood on your hands...
My Review:
The fourth installment of the Chicagoland series is another book filled with phenomenal Chloe Neill writing. Her style is awesome, the detail superb, the characters are so vivid, and the drama keeps you wanting more. I can't get enough of her books.
I was sucked right in to another Merit escapade filled with Ethan angst and vampire drama.
A touch of mystery, a bit of romance, and a lot of action kept this book going at a great pace, right up until the devasting event at the end of the book that left me asking "what the hell was Chloe thinking? How could she do this this?"
No I won't give spoilers, but let me tell you some fans are going to be seriously pissed. I know I was not happy, at all.
Hard Bitten wasn't as steamy or intense as the the third book in the series or as fabulous as the previous three have been, but I think the ending really put me off and fouled my view on the entire book.
I pray that author Chloe Neill makes this situation right in the next book, Drink Deep, coming out in November. I don't know how she'll make it right or if she can, but hey this is paranormal fiction, anything is possible.

“My love, speak to me. Tell me everything.” Neferet went to Kalona, kneeling before him, stroking the soft, dark wings that unfurled loosely around the immortal.

“What would you have me say?” He didn’t meet her eyes.

“Zoey lives.” Neferet’s voice was flat, cold, lifeless.

“She does.”

“Then you owe me the subservience of your immortal soul.” She started to walk away from him.

“Where are you going? What will happen next?”

“It is quite simple. I will ensure Zoey is drawn back to Oklahoma. There, on my own terms, I will complete the task you failed.”

Exonerated by the Vampyre High Council and returned to her position of High Priestess at Tulsa’s House of Night, Neferet has sworn vengeance on Zoey. Dominion over Kalona is only one of the weapons she plans to use against Z. But Zoey has found sanctuary on the Isle of Skye and is being groomed by Queen Sgiach to take over for her there. Being Queen would be cool, wouldn’t it? Why should she return to Tulsa? After losing her human consort, Heath, she will never be the same – and her relationship with her super-hot-warrior, Stark, may never be the same either…

And what about Stevie Rae and Rephaim? The Raven Mocker refuses to be used against Stevie Rae, but what choice does he have when no one in the entire world, including Zoey, would be okay with their relationship? Does he betray his father or his heart?

In the pulse-pounding 8th book in the bestselling House of Night series, how far will the bonds of friendship stretch and how strong are the ties that bind one girl’s heart?

My Review:

Ok I was a little surprised at the steaminess of this book. It was perhaps a little too steamy for YA in my opinion- but I'm a mom of a soon to be 12 year old girl who reads this series.

I just wasn't expecting the book to have that much heat.

Anyway onto the review...I've been trying to catch up on this series. I love that a mother and daughter team write this series. I think that's awesome.

My daughter started reading these books and really loves them so I figured I would give it a try. The first couple books had me hooked. Then the hook started to slip.

By the time I got to this one I'm a little ehhh.

But that could be because I don't read a lot of YA, maybe I just expect too much. Anyway, the characters don't seem to be developing enough for me and the same old same old keeps going on. Stuff gets rehashed and redone but nothing new really gets added.

I want the books to move forward. I want the characters to move forward. I want more, I need something new to hold my interest.

I know my daughter will read this series until it's finished, she has much more invested in it than I. I don't bond with the characters or really get into the story. I doubt I'll finish this series unless the next book really picks up the pace. I wish they'd go back to the momentum they had early in the series. Things moved a lot quicker and new stuff was always being introduced.

Review of The Restorer by Amanda Stevens

Five Fangs for The Restorer Book Description:

My name is Amelia Gray. I'm a cemetery restorer who sees ghosts. In order to protect myself from the parasitic nature of the dead, I've always held fast to the rules passed down from my father. But now a haunted police detective has entered my world and everything is changing, including the rules that have always kept me safe. It started with the discovery of a young woman's brutalized body in an old Charleston graveyard I've been hired to restore.

The clues to the killer—and to his other victims—lie in the headstone symbolism that only I can interpret. Devlin needs my help, but his ghosts shadow his every move, feeding off his warmth, sustaining their presence with his energy. To warn him would be to invite them into my life. I've vowed to keep my distance, but the pull of his magnetism grows ever stronger even as the symbols lead me closer to the killer and to the gossamer veil that separates this world from the next.

About the Author:

Amanda Stevens lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband and a black cat named Lola. She is an avid reader, a fledgling taphophile, and a collector of Alfred Hitchcock memorabilia. When she’s not writing, she likes taking road trips through the South. You can find her online at http://www.amandastevens.com/

My Review: Wow. This book sucked me in from the first page. This is something totally new and differnt in the genre- a cemetery restorer. Interesting job. Great way to throw someone right in the middle of a murder investigation.

The characters were mesmerizing with enough mystery that will make you ache for more books in this series. Each character is shadowed and full of secrets.

What's the deal with Amelia's dad, why doesn't he tell her more?

What's up with her mom, what secrets does she share only with her sister?

Why doesn't Amelia know more about her own life? She's adopted yet she's never asked questions about that, about her real parents? She can see ghosts but she doesn't know why?

Is it because she's a proper southern girl that she doesn't ask questions?

Hell I must be yankee through and through because my life consists of needing to know Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? Of course that could be my journalism training too.

Then there's John Devlin, that man is mystery incarnate and the epitome of dangerously sexy. He's surrounded by ghosts, a secret society and general mystery.

Oh and let's not forget "Tom Gerrity. I have a ton of questions about him but if I ask the questions I'll be leaking spoilers and I can't do that.

This book was riveting, it sucked me right in.

The old south, Charleston and surrounding areas, is a perfect setting for mystery and ghosts.

The setting, the characters, the mystery- everything is fabulous and I am waiting impatiently for the next books in this series so my questions can be answered.

Review of This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Five Fangs for This Side of the Grave

Book Description:

The highly anticipated continuation of Jeaniene Frost's New York Times and USA Today bestselling Night Huntress series, in which Cat and Bones face an enemy unlike any they've met before.

Danger waits on both sides of the grave.

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance...

With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"--the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war. ...to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

My Review:

Cat and Bones smolder on the page. I think they are the best book couple ever. Most books end once the couple gets together or the spark dies and sizzle lessens. Not with Cat and Bones. I'm pretty sure they just keep getting hotter.

There's never a dull moment in their lives- always some supernatural is out to get them, someone close to them, or usually out for Cat. This time the leader of the ghouls wants Cat's head on a platter to serve his own agenda to cause war between the vamps and ghouls.

Cat and Bones have to go to New Orleans to seek help from voodoo queen Marie Leveau. She doesn't say much or give them anything they can use only forcing Cat into something she didn't want. They don't know Marie gave them something valuable- at least not right away. But how can they use it to their advantage? Can they use it to stop the war?

This is probably the best Cat and Bones book so far. There is lots of action, some extreme emotion that pulled some tears from me, and a super sizzling sex scene between Cat and Bones. Oh and some wonderfully placed humor that will make you laugh. I love the scene where a ghost appears and Bones learns it's the ghost that poltergeisted Cat's panties a few books back. In the middle of a serious speech Bones is mouthing silently to the ghost- Me. You. Exorcist. I absolutely loved that part.

I also loved the scene with Cat and Vlad in the graveyard then the slight humor that insues once they get back tot he house. It leaves Cat blushing, well it would have if she had still been capable of blushing.

Vlad is a complicated character and I can't wait to read his book. I love the twists and turns Frost always throws in, things you never see coming. And I love how she keeps everything fresh- with the characters, the story...

I am going to really hate it when this series ends. But there's a few books left.

Book six, One Grave at a Time will be out at the end of August. Yes August that means 2 books in this series in one year. How fabulous is that?

Interview with Chloe Neill and Hard Bitten Giveaway

Please welcome Chloe Neill to Fang-tastic Books today for an interview as part of her virtual book tour for Hard Bitten, the 4th book in the Chicagoland Vampires series.

Let's start with learning a little background about the books, what was the inspiration behind the Chicagoland series?

I guess Merit was the inspiration. She was the first character I "met," and I
was trying to figure out what her story might be. I knew she was going to be smart, sarcastic and stubborn. I also knew I wanted to write about vampires, and I was interested in how they might set rules to keep themselves secret from humans--like in Houses. I eventually put the two of those things together.

Is Merit based on anyone in your life?

Nope. We share the same sense of humor, I think. And I wish I had her chocolate drawer!

Are you as big a fan of baseball as Merit?

I'm not a huge sports fan at all right now, mostly because I don't have much
time to keep up. I do enjoy college football, though, when I have the time.

You mention food a lot in the books, what's your favorite Chicago culinary
delight?

I love Crust in Wicker Park for pizza, and you can't beat a lemon ice at Navy
Pier on a summer day.

Speaking of Chicago, how excited are you that the RT convention will be in
Chicago in 2012?

Thrilled! I've never been able to go before, and it's such a great opportunity to meet readers! Yay, Chicago!

OK onto the book, I was um...lets say pretty surprised at the end of Hard Bitten
(don't worry I give no spoilers)-did you plan that ending all along or did it just kinda happen as you wrote the books?

It has been planned since the very beginning--as have the rest of the moments in
that particular part of the story. :)

What does the future hold for Merit, how many more books are planned for the
series?

We'll get to see more of her in action as a Sentinel, and more supernatural
drama, of course! There are currently 7 CV books under contract. I'd like to write more than that, but it will depends on sales!

Thank you Chloe for joining us today at Fang-tastic Books.

Thanks for having me today!

I have a great giveaway today thanks to Rosanne at Penguin
