Setting the Scene: I’ll Be Damned by Casey Keen

Setting the Scene… Savannah, GA

When it comes to writing a novel, the setting plays an important role in creating the tone/theme of the book and how the characters interact with it and one another. When I first developed the plot of I’ll Be Damned, I knew Savannah, GA would be the perfect city to add some depth into my storyline and characters, especially the lead, Anna. What about Savannah felt right? Well, the first time I visited this city (and I visit here a lot), it was love at first site. The minute my foot touched the cobblestone street I parked on, it felt like I stepped back into time. Homes, statues, squares, street lamps, architecture, etc.—most mimicked a time when true beauty was treasured and grace was sought after. Savannah radiates historical elegance and enchantment.

Another factor was familiarity. I wanted the main setting to take place somewhere I’ve visited. What’s the importance in that? Since I knew I would have more than one fictitious setting intertwined throughout the novel, I wanted the main point of reference (or the “heart”) to be “real.” Savannah is a city I’ve seen with my own eyes and created experiences in. Because of this, I can share my deep love for it in my writing. This allows me to help the reader envision the world I created in their perspective.

Settings in novels can either be a character or embody character; sometimes both. In my novel, I wanted Savannah to be a place the characters can retreat to, but act as an influence at the same time. Throughout the book, the reader can see how Anna is heavily influenced by this city (for reasons I won’t give away here!) and in turn, how she interacts with it and what it has to offer. So, when writing, be mindful of the important role your setting(s) plays in each scene and with each character!

About the Author:

I was born in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in the suburban outskirts of this amazing city. I love anything paranormal and/or supernatural - seriously I live in Philadelphia! For those of you who don’t know, this city is an awesomely haunted place! This healthy paranormal addiction has provided me the motivation to write my first book, “I’ll Be Damned.”
