I’ve always been a big fan of Mafia movies and
fiction. Mario Puzo is perhaps my
favorite writer outside of the fantasy and horror genres. Being a horror and fantasy writer, with some
sci-fi mixed in here and there, I wasn’t sure how I would ever be able to write
a book featuring mobsters. Although
organized crime isn’t as organized and powerful as it used to be (at least in
Philadelphia where the novel takes place), it still remains a fascinating
subject for me. The Mafia is all about
loyalty, family, revenge; an organization that operates in the shadows with a
code of conduct that doesn’t exist in the rest of the society. To rise in their organization makes you a Man
of Honor. Their tactics are heavy-handed
and brutal. They write their own rules,
and ignore the ones created by society.
I
am also a big fan of vampire movies and fiction, but vampires have been done
and done again, and done again some more to the point where we have to endure
sparkly vampires that drip with angst and fawn over similarly angst-filled
teenaged girls for reasons that completely escape me. I wanted to bring vampire fiction back to
where it should be. Vampires are vicious
killers, not romantic anti-heroes. Vampires
are not your friend. They would kill you
as soon as blink an eye. Like the Mafia,
lives in the shadows in order to survive.
They also have a code of conduct and are built around a family
structure.
What
sparked this novel was the combustible combination these two groups, similar in
some ways yet still disparate in many other ways, could create. What would happen if an organized crime
syndicate locked horns with a brood of vampires? Throw in the FBI into the mix and anything
can happen. The result is the Wild West
in the streets of Philadelphia. Writing
this novel was good fun, something I hope resonates with the readers.

“Alexei chose the wrong neighborhood to claim his latest victim. Now Philadelphia mob boss Enzo Salerno is determined to hunt down the man who killed his associate in such gruesome fashion in his South Philly row home. Perplexed by this unnatural murder, Salerno uncovers clues that lead him to believe that this was not a mob hit, and that a vampire was responsible for this death. Magnus, the leader of Alexei’s brood, must now use all of his resources to save them from both the mafia and the FBI.”
