An Interview and Giveaway: The Null City Books by Barb Taub

EIRIE: Hello and thank you for joining us. I'm Eirie Danu and this is Null City's number one Talk Radio. Today I'm very excited to welcome special guests Leila Rice and Gaby Parker from One Way Fare, Null City Book 1. In addition, we have Lette Simoneau from Don't Touch, Null City Book 2. Ladies, since it's New Year's Eve, I'd like to ask each of you for your resolutions for the coming year. Gaby, let's start with you.

GABY: “Sure, but I wonder if I could just get Lette to switch places with Leila first? She's so tall that if she goes in the middle there will be a better balance for the seating arrangement. And while she's doing that, I'll just rearrange the coffee tray so that the three cups are in front, and the coffee carafe is anchored on either side by the milk jug and the sugar bowl. Now, where were we? Oh yes, my resolutions. I'm not sure there's anything I need to work on. Leila, stop coughing “OCD” into your sleeve. I'm a harmonia, you demon-spawn, which means I need balance, preferably in groups of three or five, if I'm going to see the hidden patterns behind things.  I promised Dad before he was murdered that I'd give up the breaking and entering, so I suppose my resolutions could be to save Null City, and then to just chill, or whatever crap it is that people say when they don't have properly organized lists of what to do next. Speaking of which, I'd better update my Resolutions list, so Leila why don't you go ahead?”

LEILA: “Hey, y'all. Leila Rice here.  Yes, our Gaby is a list maker. Whatever you do, don't let her start reading that list out loud or we'll be here all day. [Dodges Gaby's elbow with practiced ease...] My resolution is the same one I've had ever since I met with that stick-up-his-butt lawyer in London who thinks Gaby is all that. He asked me if I wanted tea with biscuits and a case of jewelry from my birth mother. And her chateau. In France. But all I've ever wanted is to make it back to my adoptive parents in Atlanta and break the news to them that they raised a sort-of demon whose boyfriend is a kind-of angel. Only I guess there are a few things I have to worry about first—Gaby and I have to save Null City, there's that whole prophecy about me ending the world, and also I'm going to miss my first day of college by about 125 years. And if somebody had mentioned at the beginning that the angels were going to be on the other side, I think it would have been... Pretty. Damn. Helpful.”

EIRIE: Yes, well... Leila are your eyes glowing? Maybe you should take a moment to... calm down and get centered or whatever demons do to avoid meltdown, especially with that whole ending-the-world thing you've got going. Maybe we should move on? Lette, can you tell us about your resolutions?

LETTE: “Well, if Leila thinks her inheritance is trouble, she should try having fingertips that change whatever I touch into something different each day, from bunnies to bubbles to bombs. That's why my resolution for next year is to move here to Null City. Stefan says that after one day in Null City, those with extra gifts turn into their closest human counterparts. For example, imps become baristas. (Of course, they’re now ex-PhD candidates in literature or classics who claim to be experts on third-world coffee blends and obscure world music groups. But hey – there is only so close to human that hellspawn can get…) There is this annoying ex-angel who says that won't work out for me, but I still want to give it a shot.

EIRIE: I see you brought your charming little cat with you. Do you have a resolution for him too?

LETTE: Why am I the only one who gets that George is actually just an adorable tail attached to eight pounds of pure mean? Technically he belongs to my mom, but I accidentally touched him into a cat-shaped s'mores once, and he had to stay in the freezer for a while. And even though I managed to touch him back into a cat, he has to stay near me or he freezes up again. Now he's more like a disgruntled roommate. If my resolution was for him to be happier, would that make him gruntled? Since it's George, we'll never know.

EIRIE: I'm afraid that's all we have time for today. If you'd like to learn more about Null City, or about my own story, please tweet @barbtaub  or email barbtaub (at) gmail (dot) com, and I'll send you a free copy of They Fight Crime! Hope flares each morning in the tiny flash of a second before Lette touches that first thing. And destroys it.

Her online journal spans a decade, beginning with the day a thirteen-year-old inherits an extreme form of the family ‘gift’. Every day whatever she touches converts into something new:  bunnies, bubbles, bombs, and everything in between.

Lette’s search for a cure leads her to Stefan, whose fairy-tale looks hide a monstrous legacy, and to Rag, an arrogant, crabby ex-angel with boundary issues. The three face an army led by a monster who feeds on children’s fear. But it’s their own inner demons they must defeat first.
