Guest Author Kendra Leigh Castle Talks About Vampires and Wild Highland Magic

Today We Have A Chat with Guest Blogger
Kendra Leigh Castle

Hi, and thanks so much to Roxanne for having me over today to talk about my new release, Wild Highland Magic.
I’m totally co-opting the “story strumpet” description for myself, by the way…it’s got a lot more flair than plain old “romance writer.”

So I know I’m in good company when I show up at a blog with the word “fang” in the title. I may write Scottish werewolves, but my love affair with vampires goes way back. In fact, that’s why the hero of my new book, which is the final in a trilogy about a pack of Highland werewolves and their otherworldly counterparts, the Drakkyn, is kind of a semi-vamp. Why “semi”? Well, Bastian an Morgaine is the only male ever born into a nomadic tribe of beautiful, blood-drinking demi-goddesses. He got the good looks, and the fangs, but unlike a traditional vampire, Bastian doesn’t have to drink blood all the time. It’s required to fuel his power, which is considerable, but the need is only sporadic. Otherwise, he can go out in the sun, eat regular food, and all that other good stuff. But for his kind, biting is an extremely sensual experience, and usually leads to…er, other things :-) Though because of circumstances out of Bastian’s control, he’s never been able to enjoy the full force of that sexual power. That is, until he meets Catriona MacInnes, a she-wolf determined to help him defeat the secret curse that has stalked him most of his life. Bastian has always had perfect control…he’s had to…but as it always is with the MacInneses, Cat is a lot more than he bargained for!

I’m sure Bastian’s character owes a lot to my early fascination with David in the movie Lost Boys, if only because it started my affection for spiky-haired blondes with fangs. That was, in fact, one of the only horror movies I've ever liked...and I'm pretty sure it doesn't qualify as anything but a horror movie of the fluffiest variety, considering the Coreys were in it. Still, I expended plenty of valuable brain power debating whether I liked Kiefer Sutherland or the dark-haired vampire (his name, if he had one, was not nearly as important as the fact that he never seemed to be wearing a shirt) better. And I don't even like horror movies. It sometimes makes it hard for a girl who loves her supernatural creatures, because a lot of times, when Hollywood does blood, they've got it coming out of everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink. I don't faint at blood or anything. It's when the skin starts coming off that I have issues. My sister, the mild-mannered dental hygienist, loves that sort of thing, so I don't know what's wrong with me, the writer of strange things, that I can't deal with actors and actresses pretending to have limbs ripped off in interesting ways. But I can't. War of the Worlds scared the crap out of me, and it wasn't just because Tom Cruise was in it.However, to this day, if the movie is full of hot vampires, I will brave a certain amount of gore to check it out. I’m glad vamps are less into flaying people alive and more into brooding and biting, though!

Anyway, here’s the blurb for the tale of my semi-vamp Bastian, Wild Highland Magic:

Bastian an Morgaine has always been a man apart. The only male ever born into the Dyadd Morgaine, Tribe of the Goddess, his unusual powers and silent strength have kept him a mystery even to those closest to him. But Bastian hides a terrible secret, one that drives him to isolate himself on the remote Highland estate of the MacInnes Wolves: he carries a terrible curse, one he knows he must either find a way to remove, or make sure that it dies with him alone.

Catriona MacInnes, the daughter of the powerful Pack Alpha’s long-estranged brother, has only just begun to discover her family’s rich legacy. Worried about her father’s increasingly strange behavior, Cat hopes that Scotland might somehow hold the answers to all of her family’s problems. But upon Cat’s arrival, it’s the reclusive stranger with the face of a fallen angel who consumes her thoughts and fires her blood. Cat soon begins to suspect that her father isn’t the only one with secrets. If only her every instinct wasn’t telling her that Bastian must be hers alone, no matter the cost…

In the western Highlands, as the Wolves gather, an ancient evil watches, waiting to reach from the shadows and fulfill its dark destiny. A daemon’s curse has terrible power. But the love of a Wolf might just be stronger…and as Bastian and Cat are about to discover, the Highland moon has a magic all its own.

I’ve got werewolves, half-wolves, semi-vamps and dragon-shifters, not to mention some thoroughly nasty characters with black magic and very sharp teeth (yes, I can write horror movie characters, just can’t watch ‘em…sad but true). And if any of that tickles your fancy, I hope you pick up Wild Highland Magic and check it out!

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I’ll be around to chat all day! So here’s my question to you: who’s your favorite movie vamp? Hmm, I realize I’m inviting a barrage of “Edward Cullen” responses here, but still…:-)

Billy Worth was the hot, dark haired vampire in Lost Boys who never said much but looked so damn good. I remember him well. Drooled over him back then too.

I'm anxious to read this one Kendra, but my B&N and Borders didn't have it. LOL! Maybe it was sold out!

*goes to add book to TBR list*

This question's a challenge since I really haven't seen that many vampire movies or TV shows. I'd have to say about 1/2 of the Lost Boys, since that was the very first vampire movie I ever saw.

Billy Worth! YES! Thanks, Roxanne. Wasn't he something? Thanks for having me here today.

Cheryl, hey! LOL, I can only hope, right?

Hi Chris! Really hope you enjoy the book:-) Yeah, for me it was the Keifer/Billy half of the Lost Boys. The blonde one never did much for me, and the other guy will just always be Bill S. Preston, esq. (from Bill and Ted). Not a bad thing, but not exactly screaming "Sex-ay!" either;-)

Kendra,
As you know, I really love your Hot Scottish Were's. Just loved Rowan and Gabriel. But, I also have read a few of the other Vampire series. S.K's Dark Hunters, I'm working my way through J.R.Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. And I really love Lyndsay Sands' "Argeaneau" family of Vamps who use Bagged Blood from Blood Banks by the way. And I have many more favorites Vamp stories that I've read in the last 2 yrs. Too many to name.
I've seen Dracula 2000. So being that my Scottish Heart Throb Gerard Butler was the really sexy Vamp "Dracula" in that movie. He gets my vote of course.
I'm waiting to see the HBO series True Blood. We'll see if any of those Vamps are any good.

I love your books, I was lucky to be able to read them and do the reviews. After I read the first one I requested that any you wrote be sent to me for review. Can't say how much I like your books. My fav vamp would have to be Eric in True blood. Dvd comes out on the 19th.

Hi Donna! Man, I NEED to see GB as a vamp. That would have to be delicious. Great book picks! And you know I love that you love my characters!!:-)

Robin, that's such an awesome thing to hear...thank you! It's things like that that keep me writing away at midnight, you know? And that make it worth it. I really have to check out True Blood! Thanks for the DVD date...we don't get HBO (*sniffle*) so that's what I've been waiting for. Sounds like it would be RIGHT up my alley!

I have never seen a vampire movie., or tv show.
Your book sounds like a good read.

Yay! True Blood on DVD. I don't get HBO either and have been waiting for the DVD's to come out. Hope my video rental place gets them in.

As far as other sexy vamps- most of my faves are from TV shows not movies- David Boreanaz that played Angel was always a fave-still loving him in Bones. And the guys from Moonlight and Blood Ties were pretty hot in their vamp roles.

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Hi Estella! If you check the books out, I hope you enjoy them!

Roxanne, I'm glad I'm not the only one without HBO! I'm really interested in that series. I was SO bummed about Moonlight. Mick was hot. Josef was hot. And it was kind of cheezy, but in a fun, good way. So of course, it got canceled. *sigh* I'm with you on Angel, but I have this thing for Spike that will not be denied, LOL:-)

Oh I know, after Angel left and Spike and Buffy hooked up that was sooo hot!

I loved Spike's unapologetic bad boy ways. Angel sometimes was all boo hoo I am a vampire. Suck it up and deal! Pun intended. :-)

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

I know, Buffy and Spike were completely hot! And I just love the Billy Idol thing he has going on. He was snark instead of angst, mostly, which I preferred:-)

I love vampire books. I've never read one set in the Highlands. Sounds good! My favorite vampire is Jean Claude from Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. So sexy!!!! My favorite movie Dracula is Frank Langella. Gorgeous!

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Hi, She:-) You know, you're not the first person who's told me I need to check out Frank Langella as Dracula. I'm going to have to! The hot brother from Prison Break (not Wentworth Miller, the other one) played Dracula in some movie too, and THAT was worth watching!

Roxanne Rhoads said...

Yeah, that's right he was Dracula the first bad ass vampire in the last Blade movie, what was it Blade Trinity?

I forget all the movies and characters sometimes. Plus I don't always watch the vampire movies because like you said Kendra, Hollywood loves the Blood and gore.

I hated 30 Days of Night. The Lost Boys the Tribe was totally DUMB and nothing at all like the original, the classic Lost Boys.

I like the more laid back and not overdone vampire movies: Interview with a Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula with Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves, and I admit it- I like Twilight.

Thanks so much for having visiting Fang-tastic Books Kendra, it's been a pleasure chatting with you and having you as a guest.
