An Interview with Nancy Haddock and a Chance to Win a Copy of Last Vampire Standing

Hi, Roxanne! How nice to be here!

It's great to have you here, Nancy. I can't wait to check out your series, the books sound phenomenal. I love a good vampire book and your sound like a fun new twist on the typical vampire life. A fun, beach loving, surfing female vampire as your heroine... Gotta love it.

So let's get on with the interview and learn more about you and your vampire books.

Have you always wanted to be a writer or is it something you discovered along the path of life?

I’ve made up stories for as long as I can remember, and my mother tells me I used to ask her to write them for me. Along life’s way, I also discovered a love for teaching, and as there were few writing courses at my college of choice, I first became a Speech & Language Pathologist. I worked in public schools and in a university clinic, and later also taught traditional subjects in a small, private high school.

But yes, much as I love to teach, I always wanted to write and was always pulled back to writing!

How has your writing path evolved? Where did you start?

As a young child, I have no idea what I wrote, but in grade and high school and in college, my efforts were in poetry and short stories. Later I tried my hand at children’s picture books with a good friend, wrote a few scripts after taking a course in writing for television, and worked on comedy sketches a la Saturday Night Live. I was still working on scripts and short stories when I decided to give novel writing a shot.

My early novel efforts are best forgotten, but I learned so much in the process! I started with romantic comedy, and branched into romantic suspense with elements of humor and the paranormal (psychic visions), but nothing completely clicked. My move to St. Augustine provided an unexpected but welcome shot of new writing energy!

I still work on screenwriting, but novels are my primary focus at this time.

Are you a long time paranormal fan or new to the “Other” world?

Oh, I’m a huge long time paranormal fan! My own experiences with the paranormal edged their way into my work even before I wrote in the genre, and I’m thrilled to now be published in paranormal.

Your main character has been described as Gidget with fangs, how did that happen?

Grins, Roxanne! It all started with a peanut butter commercial. Really! In the ad, two little girls are spending the night, and the little hostess says something like, “… we can play Crazy Eights, or we can watch this ‘Princess Vampire’ video.” Now, obviously, I misheard the Princess Vampire line, but it struck me as funny, and then as a funny idea for a book. That’s how my heroine Cesca was conceived.

The Gidget part came up when Cesca informed me that she was a part day-walker, and, hey since she’d been a tomboy in her youth and loved the ocean, I should let her learn to surf. Since the Gidget with fangs idea was even funnier than Princess Vampire, I hopped on board. When a character speaks that clearly, I’m listening!

Do your characters come to life on their own or do you plan them?

Cesca came to life on her own, and many of my characters tend to show up in full form. Not that I know every detail of their lives, but it’s fun to uncover those special things about characters. Other characters I plan, but they can also pull surprises when they flesh themselves out differently than I imagined.

The first book in the series, La Vida Vampire, made you a best selling author, did you do anything to celebrate such an accomplishment?

At first, I alternately pinched myself and did the happy dance, and gave a great deal of thanks. After a few months – you know, when I thought the chance of jinxing myself was over – I bought myself a balloon that read “congratulations!” It’s deflated now, but I still have it.

Tell us a little about your newest book, Last Vampire Standing.

Last Vampire Standing was a stitch to write! Jo-Jo the Jester was one of those characters I planned, but he burst on the scene a bit differently and in fuller form than I had imagined. When he crashes Cesca and Maggie’s housewarming party, Jo-Jo begs Cesca for sanctuary from the master vampire in Atlanta so he can become a stand-up comic. Cesca’s soon learns that Jo-Jo has unwittingly brought more than bad jokes to St. Augustine, and must help her ex-slayer lover solve both a murder and the mystery of what is draining master vampires of their energy force.

If you weren’t a writer what would your career be?

If writing hadn’t kept calling me back, I’d probably have stayed in teaching. I would’ve needed another creative outlet or three, though. Outlets beyond creative lesson planning.

When you are not writing, what can you usually be found doing?

Most of the time when I’m not writing, I’m reading. I’m also known to garden here and there, to paint a bit (acrylics), to do needlework if I get the yen, or to refinish furniture pieces. I’ll also venture out with my surfboard now and then to practice falling off of it.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

How long do you have? Okay, I’ll name some, but understand that for every favorite author I name, I’ll leave out at least 5. Here goes: Lorraine Heath, Rachel Caine, Kelley Armstrong, Jim Butcher, Victoria Laurie, Robert B. Parker, Robert Crais, Jan Burke, Joan Hess, Charlaine Harris, P.C. and Kristin Cast, Lori Wilde, Janet Evanovich.

I just looked over the list. Hmmm. Make that for every favorite author I’ve mentioned, I’ve left out closer to ten more favorites. My blown book budget happily attests to how much and how many authors I read.

Have you been inspired by other authors, if yes, who?

I’m inspired by every author I read, Roxanne! Sure, I notice aspects such as rhythm, pacing, characters, descriptions, sentence structures, word choices, etc., but those aren’t the major sources of inspiration. What awes me every time is the story. Whether I’m thrust into immediate action or invited in to meet the characters first, the stories sweep me away.

What books are currently on your to-read list?

Again, this could take pages, so I won’t name but a few. I eagerly await the new books of every author I faithfully read, and I look forward to debut books and recommendations of friends just to meet authors who are new to me. I’m reading HUNTED by P.C. and Kristen Cast right now, and Charlaine Harris’s DEAD AND GONE is up next.

I have to mention a non-paranormal book that’s been on my snag list for over two years – mystery writer Joan Hess’s newest Maggody book. This isn’t a plug for a friend because I don’t have the honor of knowing Joan. I just love her books! I also don’t trust that I have the title correct, but last I heard, it was something about motherhood in Maggody with a release now of January 2010. Of course, I thought it was June 2009 and about had myself a hissy fit when I learned differently. J

Sometimes I think I need to be medicated in order to wait for the next books by favorite authors. Barring meds, writing my own books is great therapy. On so many levels!

Roxanne, thank you so much for inviting me to the Fang-tastic Book Blog! You and your readers are a blast!

I love the series and can't wait for the next release.

I love the way you describe your character creation. It helps that I'm not crazy when characters pop into my head and start introducing themselves.

Hi Nancy,
Fun interview. Okay, so I want to hear about your brushes with the paranormal. :) I'm intrigued. One woo woo brush I had was when I visited the Witch houses in Salem, Mass. The sensations there were strong.
The more I learn about you, I'm wondering if we're long lost sisters. *G* I love painting, garden and more. If it's artsy, I've probably tried it.
I love your Vampire series. I'm enjoying Last Vampire Standing! *Hugs*

I already have Last Vampire Standing, so leave me out of the list. It's a terrific book, and love the Jo-Jo character. Nnacy, now I finally know the mis-heard line from the commercial that inspired you. It's a great one!

What a very unique and interesting take on vampirism! I'm definitely looking forward to reading this.

Hi Nancy, great interview. I have to admit you had me at Gidget. Add in vampires and well, now you're talking! When your characters introduce themselves so fully formed, do you always know what to do with them right away (as in plot) or does that take some percolating? I've always been a pantser, but I'm trying to create a little more organization this time. My characters often show up like yours, but I have to really prod them to tell me WHY they're showing up.

I love hearing from authors about their process. Some of us are planners others work by inspiration aka the voices in our head. :-)

Hi Nancy, as far as I'm concerned there are never enough paranormal stories, and Last Vampire Standing looks like it would be a kick to read.

Sounds like a fun read! I am always on the lookout for new authors! Plus it takes place in my home state of Florida. Not enough paranormal books take place here!

I have not read any of your books, but am looking forward to doing do.

Hello, All! So sorry to be away from the computer so long, but I had fun late lunch and visit with an author visiting in town.

Eden, Tetewa, CrystalGB, Diana, Edie, Joder, Jen, CathyM, Lesleen, Estralla, Heather B and Elaing8:

Thank you for the kind words about the series! If you haven't yet read one of my books and you give them a try, I hope you'll enjoy them!

Eden, those voices in our heads don't make us crazy - unless our characters drive us there, right?

Edie, grins about hearing the story of the mis-heard line. Goes to show what we all say - stories really can come from anywhere. :)

Lesleen, so you're in Florida, too? Very cool!! Where? (Generally speaking if you don't care to be specific.)

More in a moment to answer particular questions!

Light,
Nancy

Nancy said...

Jen, you asked a great question about knowing what to do with characters who just show up. I do have to ask who they are, why they've appeared, and what story it is they have to tell. If I don't get many details, I get to fill those in along the way as the character reveals more.

So, yes, I have to let the character and story idea cook, sometimes for months.

As for being a pantster, I've been both a plotter (to the extreme) and a pantster, and both methods have merit. Are you making notes on your next WIPs to guide you? Notes as opposed to a longer and more detailed outline? Just curious.

Roxanne, it sounds like you're more a planner. Do you make detailed outlines or write long synopses as part of your planning?

One more post to give a direct answer to Diana, but of course, I'll continue to check in and respond!

Light,
Nancy

Diana, grins about being long lost sisters! Sometimes I think the same thing!

My woowoo experiences started when I was a kid - seeing beings in the woods, having dreams that later came true (at least in part), that kind of thing.

Then there was the time in my early teens when my family visited a Confederate War battleground. I saw soldiers running through the woods, carrying weapons and yelling, and I went to pull my younger brother out of the way. He thought I'd lost it. I sort of did, too, when the soldiers disappeared. :)

I've felt my grandmothers at various times, and felt spirits I didn't know. I still have the dreams, but not as often now. And sometimes, there are those sensations you mentioned. You just feel the otherworldly energy.

Happily, the vast majority of the spirits in St. Augsutine are benevolent!

Ooooh, it's almost TGIF! May you all have a good one!

Nancy

Hi Karen W, Valorie, Kytaira and Donnas!

Thank you for your compliments on the interview, and on the books! I appreciate both, and I'm grateful to Roxanne for hsoting me, and for asking terrific questions!

Valorie, I highly recommend giving PC & Kristin Cast a read. I'm hooked on the series!

Kytaira, you asked about reading Last Vampire Standing before La Vida Vampire. I think you can do it, but the stories might flow better if you read them in order. You'll have the background on how Saber and Cesca got together, and on the Jag Queens by reading La Vida first.

Then again, I've become a huge fan of reading series in order because I've regretted it when I didn't read the series of others in order. :)

Hope that helps!

Y'all have a terrific weekend!

Light,
Nancy

Two of my friends said I have to read your books, Nancy, so I now have the first to read this weekend. It does sound like a fun series when you mention Gidget and vampire, lol.

This series sounds terrific, and St. Augustine would be a great place for vampires! I'm also thrilled to find out Nancy is a fan of Joan Hess, because I am, too!

Hi Nancy,
I am near the Mouse (about 30-40 minutes away). I am a native Floridian (which was unusual way back when).
I love St. Augustine, would love to go back again but will have to wait until my kids are older. So I will just have to get ahold of your books so I can go there in my mind! :)
I love the story about seeing the soldiers at the battlefield. I don't know if I have ever seen any ghosts but I have had dreams that came true. Also loved ones who have passed on have visited me in my dreams to tell me they are okay.
Thanks so much for your time!
Hugs,

~That is neat. My lastest 'dream' was a couple of years ago when I drempt that my husband's aunt who I loved tons. At the time, she was ver sick and she came to me. She had me row her across a lake and as we went, the water grew into whitecapes. We made it to the other side, she thanked me, then stepped onto the other shore. When I woke up the next morning, we learned she'd passed away in the night. Call me nuts, but it was as if she came to me before she said goodbye.
I still love 'seeing' the soldiers!

What a lovely cover! I've seen this book in reviews, but haven't picked it up yet. How many books is there going to be in this series?

I should be reading Hunted by Cast also. I've enjoyed that series so far... You should try Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. I think I like that series even more!

Hi Pam P, Kimberly B, Leslee and Diana!

Pam, my thanks to your friends for recommending my books, and I do hope you'll enjoy La Vida this weekend!

Kimberly, do you read both of Joan Hess's series? I've been on pins and needles for her next Maggody book, so I'm tapping my foot until January 2010 rolls around.

Leslee, I love it that you've had relatives come in dreams to tell you they are well. It's a comfort, isn't it? And, wow, you live close by! Let me know when you get back to St. Augustine - I'll treat you to lunch or coffee or whatever!

Diana, what a wonderful dream of rowing your hubby's aunt to the other side! You might have been the very one - the only one she could reach - to ease her transition. How cool that you could be there for her, even in a dream.

Thank you for visiting, and for popping back in to chat! I'll continue answering posts several times a day, but meantime, go have a great Friday!

Maija, I've been holding off on the Vampire Academy books only due to time, but I'll get to start from the beginning and have several books to read at once! As for how many books will be in Cesca's series, I know there will be one more but am not sure beyond that.

Roxanne, thank YOU for having me here at Fang-tastic books! Your site is FUN, and I'll be happy to check in from time to time. I appreciate the honor of being with you!

And I know what you mean, I love to write and my characters take on a life/dialogue of their own and sometimes surprise even me!

Hi Mary! Thank you for that enthusiastic and most kind congrats!

It is awesome when the characters hop into the driver's seat and zoom, isn't it? I love it when I can barely keep up on the keyboard! 'Course there are those times they slow to a crawl - or must stop for a break. But, hey, they're only human. Sometimes. :)

Have a marvelous weeknd!
