Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone!

I hope you've been having a hauntingly good time all weekend.

I've been a little under the weather and unable to enjoy all the parties and events I had planned on attending but I made it through pumpkin carving and will be taking the kids trick or treating.

Good thing many of the Halloween events were before this weekend, like the Vampire Ball. I would have hated to have been sick during that.

Anyway I am trying to keep the icks away with vitamins and Dayquil- so far I am up and moving for what needs to be done.

So I decided to drop by and quickly say a Happy Halloween to everyone.

Now I'm off to take some more medicine so I can make it through trick or treating with the kiddies tonight.

Giveaway: A Discovery of Witches

Here's a fun Halloween giveaway for you.

I have a set of buttons from the upcoming book A Discovery of Witches

by Deborah Harkness.

The winner will also receive a copy of the book once it is available the beginning of 2011.

Here's the book desription:

A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together. Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series-with an extra serving of historical realism.

Want to win it along with the buttons pictured above?

Leave a comment on this post telling me which you prefer: humans, vampires, witches, or demons?

This contest open to US and Canada Residents

Talking Halloween with Yvonne Navarro

Happy Hallo Randomness!
by Yvonne Navarro

It's three days to Halloween, so it seems only fitting that I write about ghosts, goblins, ghouls and pumpkins. I don't write many full blogs (not to be confused with quirky little Facebook entries I manage or the annoyingly intelligent essays my husband, Weston Ochse, posts on his page), so you, dear readers, are going to be treated to random Halloween thoughts. Why? Because that's the way my mind works, and sometimes the only thing to do is let it wander at will. Besides, it's fun to see what kind of cobwebs you sweep out of there.

Ghosts. Do I believe? I'd have to say yes. I've lived in a haunted house. I'm not kidding, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it wasn't amusing or fun. In fact, it was downright terrifying. There was a reason the man who managed the property for the estate that owned it couldn't keep a tenant for more than six months. That's about how long I lived there, and it was undeniably the scariest six months of my life. Sure, I was young and the worst times were when I was in the house alone (or as alone as you can feel when you have a professionally trained guard dog at your side at all times). But I wasn't the only person (or animal!) that house scared the you know what out of, so it wasn't an overactive imagination that made me move out with a single day's notice to the landlord. I know plenty of people who also believe in ghosts, and I just finished a writers' retreat at a haunted mansion in September that brought back all those unpleasant old feelings. This makes me feel pretty good about the fact that the house I live in is less than a decade old and has no uninvited ethereal inhabitants. The only Ghost around here is my deaf white Great Dane.

Goblins. Can't resist adding this one. The only Goblin I know is my big Mama's boy of a merle Great Dane. He has the spooky golden eyes to go with his name, but as my Dad is fond of saying, "He's about as dangerous as an orange."

Ghouls. Ah, another word for zombies! Popular nowadays, aren't they? Those drippy, decomposing, flesh eating seekers of our brains and bodies. Historically I felt nice and safe, because really, who couldn't outrun a grunting, stumbling creature or three coming at you at the speed of a really clumsy snail? Yeah, and then they went and made them fast. Really, REALLY fast. Hell o Day of the Dead remake directed by Zake Snyder. I used to feel confident I could survive a zombie apocalypse, just wait it out until they all rotted away. Now I think "Oh, sh**!" and try to imagine ways to barricade myself on the second floor, hoping to heck they can't climb, too. But we do have a Ghoulie in the house. Yes, it's another Great Dane, a year old blind girl who I admit with a little shame faced humor tends to throw herself at people with all the grace of one of those original George Romero walking dead.

Pumpkins. I have no idea why I included them, other than they really are a Halloween thing. I've carved plenty in the past, although it's been years. Being a perfectionist, I always have visions of carving bigger and better. Then along comes the Internet and freaking Martha Stewart. Right, like I can do stuff like that. And while Martha Stewart's squashes are suitable for family and those trick or treaters you don't want to scare too badly, I prefer the ones that really go for the Pumpkin Fright Rule (I just made that up), the big monsters you look at and say, "Wow that's incredible!" while inside you hope you don't dream about them later that night. Curious? Brave? Check them out at Patrick Moser's http://www.grumpkins.com.

For the first time in years, we have a party to go to the weekend preceding Halloween, one where costumes are "encouraged" (adults say that; kids just assume you're going to dress up). I've had some fine and fun costumes over the years, most notably the wedding dress I bought from a thrift store, then splashed with fake blood. (That one got me both a stop by the Chicago cops because I was also carrying a small axe, and a bottle of champagne as a bar prize.) There have been homemade pumpkin outfits, a Countess Bathory ball gown, and a skeleton bodysuit. But I'm not sure what to do this year. Togas seems so seventies, zombies so common, pumpkins so... orange.

Say... maybe I'll go as a Great Dane.

Halloween Guest Blog and Black Cat Beauty Giveaway with Savanna Kougar

The Veil Between the Worlds... disappearing?

I contend, as we move deeper into the Aquarian Age, the veil is not only thinning, it is disappearing, or lifting permanently. Nearly everywere you look these days, there is evidence that is occurring. That evidence, includes, of course, all of the paranormal romance subgenres that many readers want and can't get enough of, these days. Thank goodness! Because that's what I love writing.

Consider, also, that traditional media is reporting on ghosties and high-strange events more often than in the recent past. Plus, the giggle factor is being left out, at times. Oh, and not to mention all the ghost-hunting shows on TV.

Perhaps, I'm biased in this view, that The Veil is parting on a permanent basis. After all, I do spend lots of time listening to paranormal internet radio shows. Still, where else are you going to get a well-rounded look at the truth? Mainstream media has it's own narrow agenda.

And, as someone who is endlessly fascinated by the mystical and everything paranormal, I've spent a lifetime reading about and researching these topics. As well, I've had my own collection of experiences, including a UFO sighting. No, not some bright light in the far away sky. But, heck, the thing was hanging just above the treetops. What? fifty feet.

It was utterly silent. I'd gone outside at about eleven at night. I looked up at the sky as I normally do. Okay, yeah, my heart threatened to stop for seconds. Shock shot through me and I remained rooted to the spot, staring at the thing. I questioned what I saw. However, since it didn't leave and I didn't leave. There it was, real. All too real. And, you know what, I'll never be the same.

Since it makes sense to me, personally, that beings of every type populate our world, including extraterrestrials, I mentally talked myself into remaining calm as I watched this UFO. I did my best to analyze it, as well.

What did it look like? It was blacker than the sky. It was triangular. Not one of those huge black triangles that are often spotted and reported. No, this one was small, and most likely an anti-grav craft of some kind. Eventually, it moved, a silent straight path that took it just above my trees, and due south.

Eerie. More than eerie. Unnerving, yet spectacular. It felt out of this world. Only it wasn't out of this world. When it came into full view, I'd worked up enough courage to raise my hand and wave. I said, hi, both mentally and out loud.

Hey, why not?

Okay, as far as I know, there was no response. But, I'd bet about everything they, whoever THEY are, knew I was there. Maybe, they were laughing at the pitiful human woman, having a good ole time spooking me out.

What struck me in particular was how perfectly rectangular the strips of white-yellowish light were on the two sides. The pointed end of the triangle faced me the whole time. So, as I reflected on this stunning event, I had to ask myself, was it a black ops craft? And not anything alien at all. Or, a design based on alien technology? Or.... ?

But, back to The Veil. I don't think my increasing intuitive/psychic abilities are based solely on growing older. They certainly aren't based on any kind of dedicated practice or training, since I haven't done any of that. I don't even meditate.

Certainly, a case could be made that my constant exposure to paranormal topics has contributed to my own increasing abilities. And, yeah, I think that's true because it opens the mind to the possibility. However, I don't think seeing tiny white glowing orbs raining down and flashing around... sometimes blue, red and golden ones... and seeing other ethereal phenomena around me, especially at night... and, darn, I can't even explain it all to you because I don't have the descriptive words.

And, nope, in case you're wondering, my eyesight is just fine, normal in every way. So, I say the quantum energies of the Aquarian Age are here, dissolving the veil between the worlds. ~What's your opinion?~

Okay, this isn't the best intro for my shapeshifter erotic romance, BLACK CAT BEAUTY, since no black cats were mentioned.

Excerpt ~ Sable Kiki and Devon Zant meet ~

Sable flipped her ear forward, noticing Devon Zant had halted high on the stairway, his attention clearly on the “accident” commotion. Although concealed by shadow, the bold strength of his physique could easily be seen. His dark shirt and pants skimmed his superbly muscled body as if the materials had been poured over him.

“Every inch the superhero,” Sable whispered, wondering how he would look flying on screen as the son of Super Ace. She hadn’t bothered with the movie trailer or the website. Especially since she’d only learned about the assignment late yesterday afternoon. A catnap in the sun had seemed much more enjoyable.

“Of course, I haven’t viewed those meaty ‘inches’ yet. So who knows if his cock is supercharged and heroic in action?” Sauntering unimpeded to the stairs, Sable briefly scanned her surroundings. Evidently Mr. Rising Superstar didn’t require beefy cow muscle to protect him ... just PETA to protect him from wandering pussycats. Maybe I should offer him personal protection from all pussies ... if he’s worthy.

Once she placed her foot, encased in the supple black leather of her sleek shoe, on the first step, his gaze fastened on her. Slowly she smiled at him. She lingered her Mae West smile on him as she provocatively swayed up the stairs.

Riveted, almost standing at attention, he trained his gaze on her.

Sable drew in his scent, careful not to overwhelm herself--easily done in this topsider culture. Ignoring the expensive men’s cologne he’d used, she inhaled his virility, raw and rivers-of-lava volcanic. Give me some more of him--yum.

Sliding her hand along the polished wood banister, she gradually mounted the stairway. As his gaze smoldered over her, Sable swayed even more teasingly. Her breasts rounded, becoming heavier, her nipples peaked into tight buds, and she knew they were outlined by the black gleaming stretch fabric of her costume. For a human male, his allure was far more ferocious than she’d ever experienced.

Smiling seductively, she tipped her face upwards, keeping her gaze beneath his as she approached, and halted one step away from him. Instead of blatantly perusing his masculine assets--yet--she studied his classically carved features through her half-lidded gaze. The god Hermes and the half-god Hercules, blended as one--and definitely more handsome than either--that was Devon Zant’s face.

From on high, his gaze scorched over her. Glints of lightning sparked in the depths of his eyes, and she was surprised to see how blue his eyes truly were--not sky blue. Not Paul Newman blue. No, they were deep iris blue, and so brilliantly luminous that for a moment she thought she observed an aurora of color slide over them.

No wonder a movie camera, even in the age of digital, couldn’t completely capture the actual color of his eyes. Nor could any camera do full justice to his hair. His auburn mane just brushed his shoulders and was nearly black, with fine streaks of burnt gold and bronze. She could analyze by the smell he hadn’t dyed the color. It was all natural, and obviously, a hairdresser’s dream.

Flirtatiously Sable smiled widely, then flashed her gaze over him admiringly.

“Sable,” she softly rumbled her name for him.

Excitement skittered along her skin like electrical currents as she waited and wondered if the sound of his smoky strong voice would be beyond the capacity of digital mikes.

“Your hair?” His gaze broke away from hers, moving pointedly to her own auburn tresses, which were not quite as dark as his and flamed with reddish tints.

“Not colored and like my name.” She enticed her voice over him, then languidly moved her hips back and forth so the thick waves of her hair rippled over her back and bottom. The Cat Goddess, Bastet! His voice was smoky and sinfully rich--yet pure as a clear mountain stream. If she had willed it, Sable could have orgasmed over his voice. Right there on the steps. In full view of him.

Excerpt - encounter with a witch ~

Warning ~ x-rated language

...the woman suddenly appeared, stepping in front of her.

Halting instead of gliding around the woman, Sable ran her gaze up from the stiletto black heels she wore, to the woman’s gaunt face, decorated like an Egyptian cat statue. Unblinking eyes that reminded her of dirty pool water analyzed her face.

“What black arts’ technique did you use?” The woman’s tone spiraled around her, cast from a cauldron spell.

“And why would I share anything with you?” Sable didn’t bother disguising her utter disregard. When she moved to walk away, the woman stepped in front of her again.

“He’s mine.” The sinister woman’s voice coiled like a serpent in Sable’s belly.

Placing her fist on one hip, she faced the woman fully. “Is that so?” Sable seized the attacking energy, then twined it around the woman’s throat.

Sinister woman blanched for a moment, her eyes dilating mummy-style before she dispelled the energy, and scowled ruthlessly at Sable.
“I knew it.” She growled, her voice like an inner-world gargoyle.

“Knew what?” Sable envisioned batting her head around like a play toy, but didn’t throw the energy at her.

Narrowing her eyes, then pointing a bony finger with a dagger nail that could slice open many a sardine can, sinister woman intoned, “I’m not done, if you’re smart you’ll get out of my way. Everyone gets out of my way...eventually.”

Sable idly slid her gaze over the woman’s scarecrow features, her enraged glints for eyes. “If Devon was interested in fucking a woman with a body designed by Skeletor, I would be more than thrilled to send you in his direction.” Casually, she regarded her own nails, popping out one claw. “As it is, I would advise you to express your sorcery talents elsewhere.”

“Everyone in Hollywood bows before me. I’ve ruined countless careers, and decreed countless others into existence. You’re no match for my sorcery talents, you fat ugly toad.” A sparking black cloud emanated from the center of sinister woman’s forehead.

Creating a gale-force wind in her third eye, Sable blew it, dissipating the nasty soupy stuff before it could cause a second’s harm. “Since I have no wish for a career in Hollywood, your dire threat is just so much jibber jabber to my ears.” Sable remembered not to flick her ear. Or her tail in haughty satisfaction.

“Do you think your amateurish use of magick can stop me from getting what I want? I can enslave you to my will as easily as crooking my little finger.” Demonstrating, sinister woman thrust her Grim Reaper hand in front of Sable’s eyes.

“A big ole’ oops, witchie poo, but you’re too late.” Sable languidly tossed her waves of hair. “I’ve already been enslaved. Any advise for removing this collar?”

For an instant, mean ole’ witchie poo gleamed her gaze directly on the collar, then stared at the matching bracelet.

“Want to give it a magickal try?” Sable held up her wrist twisting it in front of the woman’s eyes. To further taunt sinister woman, she glittered the bracelet in the spooky illumination of the neon disco lights. “Maybe a tiny bolt of lightning. Want to try?”

Silent long enough for Sable to hear the lyrics ‘love to love you, baby’ of the sensual disco chant behind her, witchie poo finally looked up from the bracelet. “You’ll regret angering me, you cunt stupid bitch,” she snarled, her eyes gleaming greenish streaks of demonic hatred.

Sable smiled widely, her most I’m-going-to-make-you-prey grin. “Spells at dawn? Since I’m the challenger you can choose your favorite weapon from your black arts’ bag of tricks.”

Guest Blog and Giveaway with Kalayna Price

Thanks so much for having me here at Fang-tastic Books, Roxanne. As it is nearly Halloween, the day when legend says the veil between the living and the dead is the thinnest, and as my newest book, GRAVE WITCH, features quite a bit of the Land of the Dead, I thought I’d take this opportunity to talk about ghost stories.

Now, there are a couple different kinds of ghost stories. There are those that are purely fictional for entertainment. There are those meant to terrify. And then there are those based on legend. While the first two are fun (and right up my alley as a fiction writer) it is the last type I find the most fascinating—especially around this time of the year.

I’m not saying that I do, or that I don’t, believe in ghosts, but I think anyone who has ever passed through an unnatural cold spot or heard a door suddenly creak open for no apparent reason has probably wondered about the existence of ghosts. Stories and legends have been told throughout time and across nations. Some legends portray ghosts as malicious, others altruistic, and still others seem completely uninterested in the living. Some are stories of revenge, or warnings, or messages. No matter where you’re from, you’ve probably heard stories of haunting. You might even know someone who knows someone who’s seen a ghost.

As I’m from the Carolinas, one of the ghost stories I grew up with is that of the Grey Man. If you’re not familiar with the Grey Man, he’s a specter who haunts the beaches of Charleston, SC and is usually portrayed as a benevolent spirit whose presence warns the residents of deadly hurricanes. Many people have reported seeing the Grey Man wandering the beach prior to storms. It is also said that those who see him and heed his warning to flee the island tend to fair better in the storm—sometimes to the extent that their house might be the only house surviving on a street. A helpful ghost? A warning omen? I’m not sure, but I’ve met people who swear they’ve seen him!

Question:

What ghost stories and legends did you grow up hearing? Any favorite legends?

A Review of Love Bites by Adrienne Barbeau

.5
4.5 Fangs for Love Bites

Author Adrienne Barbeau has taken her knowledge of Hollywood from her years of acting and used it to create a wild read where paparazzi are werewolves, agents are monsters and actors and actresses are ageless vampyres.

Hmmm...not much of a fictional stretch is it? LOL.

Book description from Amazon:

With her customary wit and dead-on satire, Barbeau skewers Hollywood and vamp lit alike, casting the paparazzi as werewolves and certain Hollywood “monsters” as the genuine article

Ovsanna Moore is a Hollywood siren, horror film legend, and cut throat producer. She also happens to be a 450-year-old vampyre.

In the follow-up to the much acclaimed Vampyres of Hollywood, Adrienne Barbeau paints a wonderfully sly portrait of cinematic vampyres, as well as the nature of celebrity, and the entertainment industry.

Her “Scream Queen” credentials make her the only author who could combine such a fastpaced, edgy plot with tongue-in-cheek references to the inner workings and vanity of Hollywood. A whirlwind of action, Love Bites is a clever take on vampyres readers will never forget.

If you love vampires and you love reading about Holywood, old movies and old time actors then the combination of all those in this book will surely charm you.

Ovsanna isn't a sparkly Twilight vamp and there are no teenagers running around in this book. In fact the story takes center stage over the romance making this book more of a horror novel than a paranormal romance.

I liked the charm and wit of the characters.

Detective Peter King is just my type of guy- macho, sexy, and half Italian (just like my hubby). Too bad his macho cop part makes him think that even though Ovsanna is a centuries old vampyre she still needs a cop with a gun to keep her safe.

Cute huh? Ovsanna thinks so. So did I.

Ovsanna is a kick ass and ask questions later kind of vampyre who knows how to take care of herself, good thing too since she's always getting into trouble. But that's what happens when you are the head of the Vampyres of Hollywood others always seem to be out for your head.

I found her amusing when she speaks about vampyres not loving or caring like humans yet she seems quite attached to Peter and willing to risk everything to be with him and keep him safe. Perhaps she just never met the right person before that actually made her feel such longings and emotions. Of course she hasn't realized that yet even if the reader sees it coming.

No the vampyre is still in denial.

Love Bites was a fang-tastic read I couldn't put down until the very last page was finished. Now I have to go back and read the first book in the series Vampyres of Hollywood which I never read because I mistakenly thought it would be a fluffy bunny vampire read.

After reading Love Bites, with it's nod to true horror novels (and movies), I realized there's nothing fluffy about this series and I can't wait to read more.

Love Bites takes old world vampire myths and legends and meshes them into a new style vampire that will leave you wanting more.

4 Basic Web Tips for Authors

The past couple weeks I have been slammed with work and web stuff.

Halloween seems to be my busiest time of year.

That's how it is when you promote the paranormal I guess :-)

Since I have been busy I have been trying to save time or make time wherever possible. In doing this I have noticed simple things that waste time- like having to search for things or repeat myself.

Authors please don't take any offense to this I am an author myself and am guilty of some things but as you progress you learn.

Here are some tings I've learned that make promotion easier for you and the websites and blogs that you work with.

1) Post your email address on your site and blog. Bloggers, promoters, reviewers, publishers, etc might wish to contact you. Your email address needs to be visible and easy to find on all of your websites and blogs.

Create an email that is strictly for business and set up spam filters. You might have to deal with some spam but you might also make some great connections that can boost your career.

If you can't be contacted your career may not flourish.

This is the most important thing you can do and one of the simplest things that is often overlooked. Just this week I searched three author websites and blogs and couldn't find an email address anywhere.

2) Have a professional author email address. This means create an email address that is your author name (if you write under more than one name, have a separate account for each pen name makes things easier believe me). When I have to contact an author I search through my address book under their name. If it doesn't come up I have to dig through emails trying to find them. Don't use cutesy stuff like sexywriter@whatever.com or crazywriterwoman or anything like that.

Simply use yourname@whatever.com- this is something else that makes it much easier for you to be contacted.

3) Research online author and book promotion. If you are going to promote online do your research. Check out sites and see what they offer.

If you want to promote at a site read through the site before emailing them and asking what they offer because 90% of the time if you check out the site it'll be clear.

Every day I am asked- what do you offer? what should my guest post be about? what is your site about? And I repeat myself every day (as I am sure hundreds of web mistresses and bloggers do)- and no I am not being bitchy :-)

Save everyone a little bit of time and research your target. All you have to do is scan through a site and see what other authors have guest blogged about, what type of giveaways have been offered, etc.

4) Don't be a diva. Every site does things a bit differently, everyone has their own way of doing things don't nit pick and request that your stuff be posted differently or crazy stuff added. If your name is wrong yes ask that it be fixed, if your links are wrong request that they be fixed. But don't ask for stuff to be rearranged or added or anything like that. If you are too picky bloggers and promoters will start labeling you as a diva and not want to work with you.

Those are 4 simple and basic web tips that can make author promotion so much easier. And these are coming from me and author and book blogger so I know both sides of the coin and I have learned from my experiences.

When I started out I had no idea what book blogging and online book promotion was all about. I figured if you write it people will buy it. Well they aren't going to buy it if they don't know it exists.

Book bloggers and book promotion websites are the bread and butter of writers- especially ebook authors.. These sites are what can make or break your success.

Do your research, know which sites to pitch to and appear on, and above all else make your author persona easy to find on the web- this means have a blog, have a Twitter account, have a Facebook account and above all else make sure your email address is easy to find.

DEAD AMONG THE LIVING
By Jo Ramsey

The day that many of us celebrate as Halloween comes, at least in part, from Samhain, an ancient harvest festival, still celebrated today by some, which marks the end of the half of the year when daylight hours are longer than darkness and the beginning of the half when dark hours outnumber light. It was also believed to be a day when the separation between the world of the living and the world of the dead thinned, allowing the dead to reach out to those they’d left behind. A day, possibly, when one might communicate with the dead.

Then again, some people believe humans can do that any time

In my Reality Shift novels, Jonah Leighton and Shanna Bailey don’t exactly communicate with dead spirits. Instead, they have guides, beings that speak directly into their minds to offer advice and help them solve problems. Those beings include spirit guides, human souls that have stopped incarnating either by choice or because they’ve learned all the lessons they intended to learn and no longer need to incarnate. Now they act as guides for other humans.

Some people believe that all humans have guides, which is what Jonah tells Shanna in the novels. There are also people who believe they are able to speak to dead spirits, and even that the dead are still with us until they choose to incarnate again, if they do.

If the dead are with us all the time, either as guides or as spirits, maybe there’s something to the belief that the dead are able to reach out to the living on Samhain or Halloween. So pay attention on October 31, because you never know what you might see or hear.

Blurb for Connections:

At the start of high school, Shanna Bailey doesn’t imagine her life will change. She’s always been the one everyone else puts down, even her own mother. Shanna is positive high school will be no better. But when she meets Jonah Leighton, everything changes. Though most other kids make fun of and even fear Jonah, Shanna finds him to be kind and thoughtful, and he amazes her with the things he knows. Even more amazing, he wants to teach her what he’s learned, and he wants to be her friend.

When Kaylie Sturbridge, one of the popular crowd, starts acting strangely, flipping out in school and shouting about a dark thing following her, her friends shun her. Only Jonah seems to know what’s going on, and he persuades Shanna to work with him to help Kaylie. But can the two of them rid Kaylie of the entity that wants to take over? And can Shanna trust herself enough to do what Jonah needs her to?

Blurb For Filtration System:

Jonah Leighton never expected to have a close friend, especially one he met at his school, where he’s usually either picked on or ignored. A few weeks after meeting Shanna Bailey, he’s realized that she’s a kindred spirit. Intelligent, funny, and interested in the things he can teach her, Shanna is the first person with whom Jonah’s ever been comfortable sharing his knowledge.

However, Shanna’s frequent injuries cast a pall over their friendship. Jonah suspects that Shanna’s mother abuses her, but without proof, he can’t do anything. And his concerns about Shanna take a back seat when he becomes aware of a threat to our universe: An entity from another reality wants to cross over into ours, and the resulting energetic backwash will vaporize our world.

Faith in Fae: The Origins of Faery Lore
By Madeleine Drake

In pagan times, belief in faeries and elves was widespread throughout Europe: everywhere you find Celtic and Teutonic culture, faery lore shows up in folk customs and tales. But why faeries? What's the origin of the belief in the Hidden People?

One of the earliest "explanations" for faeries comes from the saga of Beowulf, which contained a mixture of both pagan and Christian beliefs. In Beowulf, faeries are lumped into the same category as monsters like Grendel and other demons, who are described as the descendents of the Biblical Cain.

Starting in the Middle Ages, proponents of Christianity argued that faeries were fallen angels whose sins were lesser than that of Lucifer's, so God cast them down to Earth instead of sending them all the way to Hell. It's not surprising that Christianity equated faeries with demons, given that the early Church divided the entire world into God's forces and Satan's forces.

A delightful exception to the Church's view--Scottish minister and seer Robert Kirk wrote a detailed treatise on faery civilization, in which he explained that there were other realms beside the human one, and that the inhabitants of these other realms were as much a part of God's creation as we are.

But as the fledging sciences of anthropology and archaeology developed, other explanations for the popularity of faery faith arose.

There was the "souls of the dead" theory, which said that belief in faeries was an outgrowth of ancestor worship. This theory makes a lot of sense when you consider the traits of faeries:

• They live underground, often in burial mounds.

• The dead were often reported as seen in the company of the Fae (especially in Ireland).

• The Wild Hunt is a faery rite where Fae emerge into the human realm and snatch up the soul of anyone unlucky enough to cross paths with the hunters.

• There are a number of traditions which say being killed in a certain way can cause you to become a faery (dying before your time, dying in a war, being a druid who was not saved by Christ but who was not wicked enough for Hell, or being stillborn are just a few examples).

• Faery food and drink, like the food and drink of the underworld, cannot be safely consumed by a living human—if you dine with a Fae, you're there to stay.

The mythological theory was born from the new discipline of comparative religion. This theory proposed that faery lore and practices are the half-remembered remnants of a more ancient pagan religion.

To support this theory, its proponents pointed out that:

• Many pagan gods were closely associated with faeries, and faeries sometimes bear the names of ancient deities. The Book of Invasions, a medieval document which describes a succession of races invading Ireland and portrays the Tuatha de Danann as gods who were eventually supplanted by the Gaels, supports this theory.

• Sacrifices offered to the faeries were practiced: ritual sacrifices of blood and food in northern Europe, "gifts" of food, drink and household items in southern Europe.

• Faeries perform some of the same functions as nature spirits in so-called "primitive" religions, and faery practices resemble those of other Stone Age shamanic traditions.

Yet another theory – the anthropological theory – was popular among the Victorians. This theory stated that stories about faeries were actually garbled history of a time when sophisticated Iron Age humans settled in Europe, conquering the small-statured, dark-skinned race of aboriginals and literally driving them underground (in Britain, the Picts; in Germany, the descendants of the Celts and the Wends, often referred to Kleine Heiden, or Little Heathens).

The evidence?

• Faery fear of iron was considered symbolic of the aboriginal people of Europe having only Stone Age technology, inferior to the invader's swords and axes.

• Stone arrowheads dug up by archaeologists (another new scientific endeavor) were said to be elf shot or faery darts, and other Neolithic artifacts were sometimes said to be items left behind by the Fae.

• The Book of Invasions, interpreted as garbled history rather than as a religious document, is sometimes invoked to support this theory too.

But maybe you'd like a more modern theory of faery origins? One more fitting for this modern, high-tech, space-faring era? You're in luck.

In 1908, an Irish tailor told scholar Walter Evans-Wentz that faeries came "from other planets." Many UFOologists since have pointed out the striking similarities between stories of human encounters with faeries and modern reports of alien abduction. And Robert Kirk's theory of "other realms" sounds remarkably like a pre-modern-physics suggestion that the universe contains dimensions that we can't detect.

Fallen angels, forgotten gods, conquered peoples, alien visitors—in every era, we remake the Fae in our image. When Christianity dominated Europe, we squeezed the Fae into our religious worldview. When imperialism was all the rage and the resulting clash of cultures inspired us to study other people's beliefs, we reshaped the Fae to fit our new ideas about politics and comparative mythology. In our current scientifically-focused era, the idea that Fae could be visiting aliens—or even colonists—is intriguing.

How do you like your Fae? Would you rather imagine them as pagan gods or pointy-eared aliens?

Faery's Bargain

A witch gets more than she bargains for
when she lends her magic to a sexy Fae warrior

Tara's witchcraft has failed to save her naga-bitten nephew: the only cure is a rare Faery herb, impossible for a human to obtain.

Kane, a warrior of the Morrigan tribe, is bound to a baigh-duil. He needs a witch to help him send the soul-devouring monster back to its own realm, and he's willing to bargain.

It seems like a fair trade -- the herb for help with a single spell. But what will Tara do when she realizes Kane can only perform sex magic and death magic?

Excerpt:

First time in a thousand years the oracle's been wrong, and it's my question she blows. Kane glowered at the occult shop across the street -- a refurbished Victorian painted lemon-drop yellow and trimmed in white, with all the hand-carved flourishes picked out in gilt. Its windows swarmed with faceted crystals that sparkled like drunken pixies in the San Francisco sunlight.

It was too damned cheerful for a woman reputed to have faced down a naga in its own lair.

He stomped down his frustration, focusing on the cool air against his face and the scents of the ocean and car exhaust. The witch inside that candy house might not be the one he sought, but Kane had to admit she was skilled for a human. He could feel the thick, electric buzz of her wards even from across the street. She'd layered the shielding into the walls and powered it with the ley line that ran right beneath the building. Clever, but also dangerous. Tapping straight into the line for spell-work was like drinking from a fire hose. It required excruciating precision to siphon off just the amount you needed without drowning and heroic strength of will to resist the temptation to drink too deep. Kane had seen a mage lose control of a ley line in mid-spell once. The mage had suffered an agonizing death, and the damage wreaked by the botched spell had taken weeks to clean up.

Pain seared through him. The amulet tucked under his shirt flared hot against his skin, its fiery glow visible through the fabric. He hissed out a cantrip, repeating the chant until the pain dulled and the amulet cooled. I won't be able to maintain the binding much longer.

If the witch in the lemon-drop house couldn't help him, he was dead.

Time-yellowed pages slithered against each other as Tara folded the grimoire closed, letting her fingers explore the arcane symbols embossed on the cracked leather cover. Another ancient tome, another chunk out of her rapidly dwindling savings, another dead end. Meanwhile, Jimi continued to weaken under the care of his confused doctors. She didn't blame them, of course. Even if she could make them believe her, what could they do? My nephew was bitten by a half-man, half-snake monster straight out of Hindu mythology. What do you mean you don't have the right anti-venin?

Even more frustrating, she'd found a cure for the naga's poison -- crith-siol, a plant rumored to be cultivated by the Tribes of the Fae -- but it had proven impossible to get. For the last three months, she'd scoured book after book, hoping to find a substitute for the faery herb. As she searched, Jimi grew weaker. Tara had snatched the boy out of the naga's coils before the monster could eat him, but she hadn't saved him. She'd merely postponed the inevitable, and now she could do nothing but watch her nephew deteriorate, his body shutting down one system at a time. The last doctor had given Jimi a couple of months more, at best.

I wish Gran was alive. Gran would have found a cure by now. Or she'd have found a way to get the crith-siol, no matter what it cost.

Gran wouldn't have let Jimi get caught by the naga in the first place.

The brassy jangle of bells signaled the arrival of a customer. The jangle was cut short by a loud thump and a metallic crash -- the front door slamming shut. An impatient customer. Tara sighed, caught between irritation at the interruption and guilty relief for the distraction. She stepped into the front room of her shop.

The man in the black leather duster frowned at a rack of hand-crafted candles as if he found the colorful cylinders of beeswax offensive. He was tall, dark, and too beautiful to be called handsome. His long black hair was pulled back into a sleek braid, the severity of the hairstyle contrasting with the sensual planes of his face -- sloping cheekbones, amber-brown eyes under upswept brows, and a wide, full-lipped mouth over a strong chin. He was the sexiest man she'd met in ages, and if the humming in her head was any indication, a powerful mage. That delicious hum reverberated down her spine, lighting up her nerves as it went.

He looked up, and his frown evaporated in the flash-fire of another emotion -- something so intense it made Tara want to squirm.

Can I help you? she meant to ask. But when she opened her mouth, what came out was, "Mine."

Horrified, she barely managed to stop herself from clapping her hand over her mouth. Mine? Where did that come from? It had been a long time since she'd dated, but was she so lonely that the mere presence of an attractive man was enough to scramble her brains?

Apparently so.

The corner of his mouth twitched as if he were fighting the urge to laugh.

Tara flushed. "I mean, I make them. The candles."

He licked his lips, a deliberate, sensual motion, and Tara found herself mirroring the action before she could stop herself. What's wrong with me?

"Um." She cleared her throat and tried again. "Can I help you?"

The stranger smiled. "I believe you can, Bandraoi."

* * * * *

The oracle had been right after all. The witch's aura had responded to him at once, flaring in intoxicating reds and purples the moment she'd emerged from the back room. Her eyes widened with surprise, and the power he sensed sleeping within her stirred, brushing against his aura like a curious cat. He fisted his hands against the near-overwhelming urge to reach out and pet her. She had a touch of the Tribes in her. His body's reaction to it was sharper than a knife to the heart and hotter than a Beltane bonfire. It was like his first fight and his first orgasm squeezed into one frenzied moment.

His witch was short and curvy, and she'd wrapped her luscious figure in a clingy black dress that emphasized her hourglass shape. When she pursed her lips, his cock expanded as his imagination burst open, spilling one wicked fantasy after another into his brain. He pictured her moss-green eyes half-shut with delight, sweat gleaming on her skin, while her wavy gold hair clung to her bare shoulders. He imagined all that power crackling through him as she trembled in the throes of it, her silken voice raw with ardor.

She'd sensed the rousing of her Fae nature; he could tell by the slight quiver of her shoulders, the heat that bled over her cheeks, the pink tip of her tongue wetting her bottom lip. She was perfect -- except for the wariness that glimmered across her face when he'd addressed her by her proper title. Surely she knew Bandraoi was a term of respect among the Tribes? Or hadn't she recognized him for what he was yet?

From Under the Veil: Guest Blog and Giveaway with Kayden Mcleod

Thank you so much, Fang-Tastic Books, for having me here today!

Halloween is just around the corner, and with it, traditions both new and old come into play. Kids go trick-or-treating and there are parties galore. Creatures crawl out from under their hiding places—escaping the veil that we, humanity create with our costumes and tendencies to explain away the unbelievable even more than we usually do.

We don’t trust our senses, and something otherworldly could walk right in front of us—smelling different, looking obscure—and we do nothing more than nod at them, moving on to whatever activity catches our attention next.

My Halloween erotic romance, Masquerade encompasses that. Abigail takes what’s in front of her at face-value, when it’s anything but. She thinks Cyrus Jericho is just an everyday vampire, and her friend Dina is just another werewolf. But are they?

Join Abigail on a misleading adventure filled with vampires, werewolves and zombies on All Hallows Eve, where she learns that many things she has come to believe about her home are all shrouded in a masquerade—what lies behind the façade isn’t always what it seems…

Abigail claimed the land of North Vancouver as her own, sharing it only with a clan of vampires, the Jericho Coven, who accepted the werewolf into their territory without qualm. Within their numbers is one, Cyrus Jericho; a suave, brooding vampire who isn’t quite as he appeared. He declares Abigail for his own the moment they meet, despite the fact that another werewolf pack is in British Columbia looking to claim Abigail into their midst, no matter what they must do to see that goal complete.

Guest Blog and Giveaway with Berengaria Brown

Hey! Who’s writing this book?
by Berengaria Brown

My very first Werewolf story, "Dogged Pursuit" is coming from Torquere for Halloween. Releasing on October 30, it is Dwyer’s story.

Dwyer is a two-hundred-year-old werewolf currently working as a limo driver. He’s enticed by the scent of a man he has to take into the city. The man’s smell overwhelms him and calls to him “mate”. Yet he thought only a male and a female could mate and he is gay.

Nelson is equally attracted to Dwyer and the two spend a very hot night together.

However their second date is on Halloween and Dwyer is really struggling to keep his wolf under control. Nelson’s scent is giving him a permanent hard-on and his wolf is demanding to be let free, to bite and mate with Nelson.

Their new relationship is derailed by a group of wanna-be vampires robbing an elderly couple and the elderly couple strongly believe Dwyer is their pet dog come back to life, because it is Samhain.

How is Dwyer going to get himself out of this mess? And what will Nelson’s reaction be? Can they possibly have a future together now?

I have been quite surprised to find myself writing paranormal stories. I saw myself as writing contemporaries, about ordinary people who find their very hot happily ever after.

But when I thought about a Halloween story, a werewolf just appeared in my head and started talking to me. Which is pretty much how my first paranormal book happened. I was writing “Intensity”, Keziah’s story, when a ghost just appeared out of nowhere and took over. John Smith told me “Intensity” was his story as much as Keziah’s. Of course, I was hardly surprised when I sat down to write Tia’s story, set in the same world as “Intensity”, and another ghost arrived. Gillian explained she was a relative of John Smith’s and she needed Tia’s help. What’s an author to do? Some days I think I just take dictation!

The third book in that world, “Eternity”, will be out in December. Like “Intensity” and “Complexity”, it is an MMF ménage. But this time both heroes are vampires. One of them has been a minor character in both previous books, and when I was thinking about the possibility of writing a third book, he told me he was a vampire, and it was time I gave him a happy forever after. Fortunately, the perfect woman for him and his partner was available. I’d hate to annoy a vampire! Or a werewolf. Or even a ghost!

Want to win one of my books?

Go to my blog or my webpage, look at my book covers, and email me with the title of one OTHER book I have written. Put the book title in the subject line of an email to me at berengariabrown at gmail dot com and one lucky winner will be able to choose one of my backlist as my Halloween gift to them.

Happy reading.
