Basil is the son of the evil vampire king Avadur, who he banished into the Dark Realms. Chaos was Avadur's second-in-command and is working to bring Avadur back so the time of darkness, of vampire ascendency over humans, can begin. In an effort to protect his mate, Trinity, from Avadur, Basil tried to drive her away, but they can't stay away from each other (leading to some scorching interludes). With the help of their human friends Jonah and Dante, Basil and Trinity try to protect humanity and prevent the darkness from overtaking the world.

While I enjoyed the story and world building, the writing was a bit rough in spots and sometimes a tad melodramatic. I think more editing would have helped smooth things out, too, since there were multiple instances of the wrong word or wrong word form being used. However, since this was the first book in the multi-book Darkness series, I have every hope that the writing has continued to improve and smooth out over time. I do want to read the next book, since things were not completely resolved by the end of this book.

Surrender to the Darkness is a free (and very hot) short story about the night Basil made Trinity into a vampire.

As a personal bit of weirdness, I found it disconcerting to read about a character named Trinity - since seeing the Matrix over ten years ago, there's only been one Trinity (or Neo or Morpheus) in my mind. Your mileage may vary.
