Review
25 years of Anita Blake!
How many series have that kind of staying power? Not many that I've seen.
I confess I haven't been a fan the entire time. I didn't discover Anita's world until I stumbled on a copy of Cerulean Sins at my local library about 12-13 years ago. I brought it home and fell instantly in love. I ordered every book in the series and started from the beginning. So I read 12-13 of the books back to back, one after another...talk about being immersed in a world.
Wow.
And the changes in Anita over the years- she goes from being very sexually uptight and seeing the world in black and white to loving all the sex and seeing that the world is full of shades of gray.
Sometimes it has been hard to keep track of her lovers, of who is who and how they are connected to her (I need a chart, I bet a fan has made one, if they haven't someone needs to LOL) but I'll go back figure it and then jump back into the story if necessary.
I really love the books featuring Edward/Ted. Her relationship with Edward is very unique. He's one man that has never been her lover and probably never will be but they have something solid, real, and incredibly beautiful. A true friendship.
Serpentine focuses on that relationship, in all of its weird glory. Anita, Micah, Nathaniel, and a few of her bodyguards are in the Florida keys on vacation for Edward's wedding.
It should be relaxing, but Micah has a case he's dealing with there, a unique breed of shifter no one has any information about. Snakes. A very creepy case of shifting that is beyond problematic for the family.
Nathaniel is unhappy because for Micah and Anita everything is work. Work, work, work. He wants fun in the sun, like normal couples.
Resentful feelings, mistrust and casual flirting all become sinister as unseen forces play with people's emotions turning loved ones against each other and friends into enemies.
This vacation isn't relaxing at all. Things go from bad to worse when women start disappearing, then showing up dead. Then one of the wedding party disappears and the local police have their eye on Nathaniel as a suspect.
To make matters even more tense, Olaf shows up. Anita is already stressed and now she has to worry about a crazy killer who happens to have a crush on her.
Will the wedding go on as planned? Will they even make it out of this island paradise alive? Things aren't looking good.
A deliciously dark roller coaster of sinister and sexy drama that will keep you turning the pages. Your stomach will tremble and clench with every twist and turn. Murder, mayhem, love, and fear. It's all there on the page for your reading enjoyment.
Be sure to come back for my interview with Laurell next week.

About the Book:
Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, returns for her twenty-sixth adventure. Fans of Charlaine Harris and Anne Rice will delight in this series by Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton. 'A hardcore guilty pleasure' - The Times Anita Blake faces new, even deadlier enemies as she and the people she loves confront major changes in their lives...
Vampire hunter Anita Blake has managed to overcome everything she faces. But this time there's a monster that even she doesn't know how to fight...
A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita's fellow U.S. Marshal and best friend Edward. For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it's the first trip she gets to take with wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it's not all fun and games and bachelor parties...
In this tropical paradise Micah discovers a horrific new form of lycanthropy, one that has afflicted a single family for generations. Believed to be the result of an ancient Greek curse, it turns human bodies into a mass of snakes.
When long-simmering resentment leads to a big blowout within the wedding party, the last thing Anita needs is more drama. But it finds her anyway when women start disappearing from the hotel, and worse--her own friends and lovers are considered the prime suspects.
There's a strange power afoot that Anita has never confronted before, a force that's rendering those around her helpless in its thrall. Unable to face it on her own, Anita is willing to accept help from even the deadliest places. Help that she will most certainly regret--if she survives at all, that is...
