Love And The Undead by E.B. Black #99centsale

The Top Eight Greatest Fictional Zombie Characters

I love zombie stories. I recently finished writing a reverse harem zombie apocalypse romance novel where all the main characters battle zombies.

In some stories though, the zombies aren’t just mindless monsters, they are deep and interesting characters. Here are the top eight greatest zombie characters of all time (written in no particular order):

1. Liv Moore from “iZombie”

A zombie who helps fight crimes by eating brains. It’s always entertaining finding out what weird personality quirks she is going to develop each episode as she takes on another dead human’s personality traits. It often leads to disastrous or hilarious results.

2. Frankenstein’s Monster from “Frankenstein”

Yes, I am aware that Frankenstein is the scientist and not the monster. Thank you very much.

Mary Shelley was writing about zombies before there was a word for them. She invented the science fiction genre. Reading about the monster’s journey as he tries to find his place in the world is one of the saddest and deepest things I’ve ever read.

3. R from “Warm Bodies”

I will probably never write a romance novel where a zombie is one of the main characters because zombies don’t usually make me swoon. R is the exception. He’s sweet, lovable, funny, and endearing. I read “Warm Bodies” in a day. Reading a book from his perspective was refreshing and wonderful.

4. Randall Skeffington from “Ugly Americans”

One of the most entertaining television shows I’ve ever seen. I was sad it was canceled after just one season.

5. Sheila Hammond from “Santa Clarita Diet”

She kind of scares me, but that’s what makes her interesting.

6. Angel Crawford from “Even White Trash Zombies Get The Blues”

Angel had a bad life and has been through a lot. Becoming a zombie changes
everything for her.

She’s a really well developed and interesting character that you can’t help but root for. You want her to triumph over all her struggles.

7. Ghoulia Yelps from “Monster High”

Yep. I’ve enjoyed watching some Monster High stuff and even have collected some of the dolls.

I think it’s interesting that they took a zombie who speaks in only moans and made her into the nerdy, smart character. It’s all about how appearances can be deceiving.

8. Zombie Hulk from “Ultimate Fantastic Four”

If you haven’t read these comic books, you need to. Reed Richards accidentally stumbles upon an alternate universe where all the superheroes have been turned into zombies. If you think normal Hulk is terrifying, imagine Zombie Hulk. He has the strength and rage of normal hulk, but with an incurable craving for human flesh.

What other characters do you think should be on this list?

Excerpt:

“Let me see.” Derrick had gathered some supplies from Jed, who still carried my backpack. There were unused rags leftover from Nick’s gunshot wound and a sewing kit in his hands. The doctor had gotten down on one knee, set his supplies aside, and was staring at my injured hand.
His jaw and fists were clenched. I could see on his face that he was holding a part of himself back as he drew near me.
I rolled my eyes. “I’m fine. I’m sure you have more important things to do. My wounds aren’t deep.”
The muscles in his forearm tightened at my words. His voice sounded strained. “That’s for me to decide.” He grabbed my hand and turned it over impatiently before dropping it. “Flex your fingers.”
I did so easily.
He nodded his head. “Good. The cuts don’t appear to be deep enough to have done damage to your nerves. I don’t think you need stitches.”
I raised one eyebrow. “Told you I’m fine.”
“But that doesn’t mean you don’t need my help.” His dark gaze met mine as his voice grew hoarse. I could hear whatever he was holding back coming through. “You’re making a big mess with all this blood. Have I told you how much I hate messes?”
“You didn’t have to, I could tell.”
My words were nonchalant, but my heart was pounding loudly in my ears as he licked his lips. He looked ready to either throw me off the edge of this barn for offending him with my uncleanliness or like he was the real zombie here and ready to eat me...
“We need to clean you before I bandage you up.” He lifted one of my hands towards his face. “It stopped raining and we don’t have any water to spare, so I’ve been left with no choice. It’s not the most sanitary option, but...”
He parted his full, sexy lips and popped one of my fingers into his wet mouth. I wanted to protest, but I was paralyzed. He sucked the blood off like some kind of ravenous vampire. I gasped in surprise, feeling weak in the knees. His mouth was so soft, warm, gentle, and slow. He sucked on each of my fingers in turn until I shut my eyes, ready to give myself over to him.
He moaned as he continued to suck and I couldn’t help imagining that mouth exploring other places. We would-
“Stop!”
The moment was interrupted as Nick grabbed him by the shoulder and yanked him up and off of me. Nick punched him in the stomach. Derrick grunted and hunched over, almost collapsing to his knees again.
“I told you to keep your hands off of her,” Nick growled the words. “If you touch her again, I’ll hurtle you off this roof and let the zombies take care of you for me.”
