We could talk about black cats, though. A friend of mine just rescued a little kitten lying in a puddle of rain beside the road. Another few hours and that kitten would have been dead. My friend put him in her car (gender was figured out later) and took him home to a heating pad and some kitten replacement milk.
At first the little guy couldn’t even hold up his head, but within hours he’d begun to show signs he’d make it. Soon he was prancing around and hissing at the dogs. My friend couldn’t keep him – too many pets already – but she found a woman who is thrilled to have him, so I’m happy to report he’s safe in a new home.
My friend thinks the kitten was thrown out of a car window and that his only crime was being born black. Someone was superstitious and thought that a black cat was a really bad thing. So out the car window he went, and only lived because my friend found him in time.
What I have to say to the person who would throw an innocent kitten out of a window is unprintable, but I’m doubly outraged if the reason involved the cat’s color. I love black cats. I live with a black cat named Eve, and she’s my buddy and my muse. She was the inspiration for the magical cat Sabrina in my Hex series.
I love black cats so much that when Anica, my heroine in BLONDE WITH A WAND turned her boyfriend Jasper into a cat, he became a sleek black cat. He looked, in my mind’s eye, like a miniature panther. Black cats are so elegant.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m a cat lover who appreciates other colors, too. I’m in a July anthology called CUPID CATS with Katie MacAlister and Connie Brockway, and the cat in my story is silver-gray with black swirls. He’s a magical matchmaking cat, as are all the cats in that collection.
But I can’t help favoring the black kitties. I know they are often the last to be adopted out of a shelter. Eve came from the Humane Society, and I can’t imagine anyone giving her up, but someone did, and now she’s the light of my life.
I’ve also heard that black dogs don’t get adopted as often, either. Do you have a kitty or a doggie in your life? What are your favorite colors, or does it matter to you?
Let’s talk! Anyone commenting gets a shot at winning an autographed copy of BLONDE WITH A WAND, by the way.
Did I mention I’m ready to party?
