Vampires: Good Guys or Bad Guys?

Happy Holidays, everyone. It’s great to be here as a guest at Fangtastic Books where there are so many like-minded readers and authors. I’ve been looking forward to getting your feedback on one of my favorite topics: vampires.
I’ve often wondered what it is about vampires that makes them so appealing to our imaginations. Danger, elegance, eternal life. Vampires represent such a mixed bag of hopes and fears. I’m sure that whether we view them more as a threat or as tragic, romantic figures depends on our exposure to literature, films, and television.
For example, my first impression of vampires was comprised of the curious yin yang of Bela Lugosi’s Count Dracula in the old 1931 film (seen on “Creature Features” at a very young age) and Al Lewis’s portrayal of Grandpa on The Munsters. That contrast really left me wondering what to think about vampires! As an adult, the strongest influences that shaped my perspective were Anne Rice’s Interview With The Vampire and Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. Rice’s Louis and Lestat have stayed in my imagination as much as Whedon’s Angel and Spike. (I’ve got to say that Lestat and Spike tickle my fancy the most, though.)
In my writing, I still go back and forth on my views about vamps. In Rise of the Wolf, my first book for Eternal Press, the werewolves are the good guys and the vampires are the bad guys, but of course that didn’t stop me from writing the vampire as sexy and desirable. Take the scene where my heroine Hilary first sees the vampire who’s on her trail.
Excerpt from Rise of the Wolf:
...she nonetheless noted his wavy black shoulder length hair and the ample pecs playing peek-a-boo beneath his unbuttoned white silk shirt that glowed and glistened—both the shirt and his pecs—in the bright moonlight. He also sported some mighty tight black trousers and an impeccably tailored black coat that reached past his well-muscled thighs to end mid-calf. The quality of his clothes shouted serious money although his fashion sense was just as seriously stuck somewhere in the 1800s...
...She couldn’t seem to stop staring at him. After all, he had such dark, deep glowing red eyes. What? Wait a minute.
But why should you wait? Your skin in the moonlight looks as soft and radiant as pearl. Do you not yearn to be caressed?
She would have sworn his lips didn’t move. His voice was so gentle, warm, sensuous, intimate as though he were inside her thoughts, her soul.
Then somehow, without moving, he had covered the space between them and stood next to her, pressed against her, leaning over her. His soft hair tickled her cheek. His breath whispered across her lips as he parted them with a flick of his hot tongue. The kiss was light, soft, then firmer and deeper, the deft movement filling her with the promise of such delights to come that her knees actually began to give way. He caught her, one of his arms bracing her at the deepest curve of her back, the other wrapped so that he cradled her neck in the palm of his hand....
...His chest muscles were sculpted white marble in the moonlight, like some statue from the ancient world, but he was warm to her eager touch. His muscles rippled as she snaked her nails under white silk and up his back. She grasped his shoulders, desperate to make them fit together as one.
I’m currently working on a sequel, tentatively titled “April’s Moon” where, once again the Vamps and Lycanths will duke it out. Vampires are still the bad guys, but I couldn’t stop myself from writing the full gamut of vamps from a super-evil vampire clan leader to a newly-made vampire who is definitely not cut out for the full-evil lifestyle.

Zen went up front. She was surprised to see the same man who’d been at the bar in O’Connor’s the night before. This time, instead of a blue suit, he wore a gray pin-striped button-down with the sleeves rolled up, and gray pants. He wore another pair of Gucci shoes that matched just as perfectly. He smiled as he examined a row of herbs: anise seed for love potions, to stir up lust; mistletoe, hung above door and windows to banish nightmares; yarrow to increase one’s psychic abilities, hawthorn for protection from evil spirits, and bloodroot for love potions. It seemed to Zen that he was even sadder tonight than he’d been the night before.
"Welcome to Light and Shadow," Zen said. "May I help you?"
He nodded slightly, not looking up from the potions. "The cocktail waitress at the bar up the street said you’re a witch."
"That’s me," Zen said. She noticed, for the first time, the cross that he wore around his neck. That wasn’t so unusual. Half of her customers were very religious. "I should warn you that my powers are very limited. So if there’s anyone whom you wish to turn into a toad, I can’t help you."
He laughed. "But you tell fortunes, don’t you?"
"Yeah, that I can do," she said. "I can’t tell you exactly where you’ve been, or where you’re going, but I can give you a general idea of how things are, and how they should be."
He thought about this for a moment. "That’s good," he said. "How much?"
"Forty," she said. This was twice what she usually charged, but he looked like he could afford it. He took out his billfold and handed her a fifty.
She went to the cash register to get him his change, but he said, "Keep it."
"Thank you."
"So, where do we do this thing?" he said, adding, "I assume you’re just going to read my palm or something. I hope this won’t involve chicken blood or anything unpleasant like that."
"Through the golden door," she said, pointing. "And the chicken blood service is forty dollars extra."
As Zen and her customer entered, Gillian picked up the last of the tarot cards from the floor and stood. "Hi," she said. "I’m Gillian, the assistant witch. Do you need any help, Zen?"
"No," Zen said, "unless you feel like running to the coffee shop for a couple of lattes."
"Bring me one, too," the customer said. He handed her a ten-dollar bill. "Please."
Gillian nodded. "What do you like? Caf or decaf? Sugar or artificial sweetener?"
He laughed. "I’ll make it easy on you," he said. "I’ll have whatever you ladies are having."
"You got it." Gillian went outside, the door’s chimes jingling behind her.
"Zen?" the customer said, turning from Gillian’s departing form back to Zen. "That’s a really unusual name."
"It’s short for Zenobia," she said. "Mom read it in a Hawthorne novel or something. Please, sit down. And you are?"
"Orlando Parisi," he said.
"Could you be any more Italian?" she joked, taking the seat across from him.
"Actually, yes," he said. "I’m only half Italian. Dad was from Milan; Mom’s from Slovenia. I was born in Slovenia—well, Yugoslavia, technically. Why am I telling you all of this?"

I’m especially proud of "Spicy, Earthy, Sweet," the story I wrote for Ravenous Romance. If you’ll pardon the pun, it puts the "nookie" in "Hanookkah." (I’m bad with puns; too much Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as a child.)

Today's Guest Author is Barbara Bretton
Today our guest author is Barbara Bretton. Her most recent novel is Casting Spells, about a quaint little town that seems perfect to the outside eye-but really it is home to all kinds of paranormals. The main character is a sorceress with no magic who owns the knitting shop and acts as major of the town- Chloe.
Today Barbara discusses ideas.
Ask a writer where she gets her ideas and you always get the same answer.
Everywhere.
And it's true. Ideas really are everywhere. They're in the produce aisle of Shoprite. They're in the local diner. Sometimes they're even on some gorgeous tropical beach, hiding at the bottom of a pitcher of lovely margaritas.
I'm a writer. Over the course of twenty-something years, I've published almost fifty books and that means I know a little something about ideas and where they come from.
Which is why I'm going to tell you exactly where I got the idea for CASTING SPELLS.
My dentist's waiting room while I was preparing to die.
Now I hate dentists. Okay, not the actual dentists themselves. Some of them are very lovely people. But, let's be honest here: the things they do to our poor unsuspecting mouths are probably against the laws of the Geneva Convention. Needles, drills, all manner of sharp instruments the Marquis de Sade would have loved.
So there I was, sitting alone in the waiting room, trying not to hear the cries of pain coming from the other room. (Yes. I'm exaggerating.) I had already flipped through back copies of the American Dental Association journal when my gaze landed on a fancy display of brochures for (hold on) dental implants.
Not exactly the kind of reading that puts you in a relaxed frame of mind but I'm one of those people who'll read the backs of cereal boxes so I grabbed for it. To my surprise it was kind of interesting. You could still eat steak without worrying that your teeth will land on the table. I could see the benefit. No wonder he had the stack of brochures placed next to a back issue of AARP's Modern Maturity.
Suddenly a question popped into my head, "But what happens to an aging vampire when his teeth start to go? Do they make uppers and lowers for the undead? Is there a dentist out there who would fit a vampire with implants?"
I pretty much giggled my way through my time in the dental chair, thinking of the possibilities.
And then I forgot all about it for almost four years until I was chatting on the phone with a knitter/writer friend of mine. We were talking about what makes one yarn shop better than the rest and I said, "I wish there was a magic knit shop where your yarn never tangled, your sleeves always came out the same length, and you always, always got gauge." (If you're a knitter, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.)
Well, the next day my imagination was on fire. It was Labor Day 2006. A cold rainy September Monday. I'm not sure how the two ideas came together but they did and in a few hours I suddenly had created the magical town of Sugar Maple, Vermont with its resident vampires, werewolves, witches, trolls, house sprites, shapeshifters, mountain giants, and Chloe Hobbs, the half-human half-sorceress owner of the knit shop of my dreams. Toss in a murder, a Fae enemy, and a hunky human cop who comes to town to solve the crime and you have CASTING SPELLS which, I'm happy to say, is still available. And I'm even happier to say that the sequel, LACED WITH MAGIC, will be on the stands August 4.
(And yes I do have some retired vampires in my book who zip around in Rascals and don't let dentures slow them down.)
