A Review of Wages of Sin

Five Fangs All the Way and Then Some for Wages of Sin by Jenna Maclaine

Jenna Maclaine's debut novel, Wages of Sin is a fantastic fast paced book that you won't want to put down until it is finished. I know I didn't. What an amazing blend of paranormal elements, romance, danger, and all placed in a historical backdrop.

Dulcinea Macgregor Craven appears to be the average debutante member of the ton in Regency England, except she's not. She's a witch, one of the Macgregor witches from Scotland.

All is pretty wonderful in Dulcinea's world, the only thing she has to worry about is unwelcome advances from a suitor she doesn't care much for. Then one night on the way home from a ball her parents are killed. Then suddenly Dulcinea's world is turned upside down. Her powers overwhelm her as her mother's power is passed onto her and mixes with her own awakening power. But the magic is the least of her worries after she is attacked by a vampire.

Soon her world is filled with vampires, demons and even a werewolf. Danger is everywhere and she's fighting for her life while trying to save the lives of those she holds most dear. Can she save them all and save herself? Or will she have to make the ultimate sacrifice to battle a demon that just won't give up?

Wages of Sin is a fast paced thriller, a totally engrossing novel I couldn't put down. I almost devoured it in one night but finally had to put it down at 2 am and get some sleep.

Jenna Maclaine has written a captivating tale that hooked me on the very first page. Smoothly written, well flowing, and completely riveting this book is a must read for all those into books with passionate paranormal appeal.

Dulcinea Craven is a charming witch, a strong protagonist that women can relate to. Innocent yet brave, sweet yet sexy. A blend of everything wonderful and womanly. And Michael, her vampire love interest is red hot and completely charming with total fang appeal. All of the characters are well written and alive (though most are undead).

Wages of Sin is a definite keeper. Maclaine writes with such fluidity, the story absorbed me right into Cin's world. A total page turner.

This is a series that is going high on my priority list. Maclaine's writing style is completely addictive and I want more.

At the end of Wages of Sin, there was a sneak peak at book two in the Cin Craven series, Grave Sins. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy and read the entire book.

A Review of Wicked by Any Other Name

Four Fangs for Wicked by Any Other Name

The third book in Linda Wisdom's Hex Series, Wicked By Any Other Name, totally rocks. I love that good witch Stasi breaks out of her neat little nice shell and learns to fight for what she believes in and stand up for herself.

In Wicked by Any Other Name, there is something going on in Stasi's beloved town. Everyone there knows she and her best friend, Blair, are witches but now they are treating them like they are evil. It all started when one of Stasi's regular human customers accused Stasi of using bad magick to make her husband leave her. The human Carrie was so mad she went to a Wizard lawyer, Trevor Barnes. Now she's causing major trouble for Stasi, suing to have her powers stripped from her.

When Trevor shows up in town, Stasi can't believe the cruel joke fate and that pesky Cupid have dealt her. Trevor has dancing hearts over his head, meaning he is her true love though they are sworn enemies-on the wrong side of the courtroom not to mention the fact that wizards and witches just don't mix.

No matter what Stasi does things just keep getting worse, the whole town seems to be against her, people that used to be her friends are now treating her like she's the devil-sweet Stasi, the good witch, the devil?

Jazz and Nick show up to help with Irma, Fluff and Puff, and even Krebs and his new vampire girlfriend Leticia in tow. They arrive just in time to be bombarded with a complete magickal mess. The whole town is under a spell along with the lake, but it's magick none of them can penetrate or even figure out what it is. There is definitely more going on than just Mercury in retrograde and an upcoming lunar eclipse. Samhain just isn;t going to be the same this year.

Can they stop the evil that's spreading before it is too late and the whole town is consumed by hate and rage? If they don't figure out what is going on the 21st century may end up looking a lot like the 17th century when it was common to burn witches at the stake.

Wisdom's third book in the series explores more characters, more character relationships with each other and gives a much more complex look into their world than the previous two books. As wildly entertaining as the first two with more plot and story line, it's great. A magickal romp you'll love.

Horace the gargoyle is a total scene stealer and what's up with the border collie? You'll love it once you figure it out. I just wonder why the witches didn't figure it out when all the guys knew what was up.

You'll love how Fluff and Puff get even with Cupid at the end of the book, too. It's wonderful. I love those scary, crazy bunny slippers.

I really love how Wisdom brings all these crazy characters to life, like Fluff and Puff and Horace. They are something totally different and unexpected. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series featuring Blair and I am guessing, Jake. Hmm...we'll see how that goes.

I Admit it, I am an Author Groupie

My first love was words, my best friends were books...still are. I love nothing better than curling up and escaping with a good book. My choice of genres...paranormal...usually listed as paranormal romance or mystery or whatever. I don't read the genre labels I just read the books.

And then there's the authors...Being a writer myself I know how hard it can be to write and to write well enough that people adore it...well that's got to be something amazing. It is what I strive for. Of course I actually have to write a full length book to even try to get there (so far I've made it to a novella, but not a full length novel yet). Anyway, back to the writers...I love them. I adore them...I love the characters and worlds that they create.

Movie stars are OK, rock stars are beautiful, but I am an author groupie. Authors are my rock stars. I stalk their blogs, surf their websites, wait for new books to be released, pray for ARC copies, and wish to no avail that they would come to Flint for a book signing (no one ever comes to Flint).

That's why I started Fang-tastic Books, to help showcase what I love-the books and their authors. And I am glad others out there love books and authors as much as I do.

My husband calls me a book slut, I totally am. I will do a lot for a book. I am a book slut, an author groupie, a writer web stalker. I should make a sign "Will Work for Books". Of course my husband would probably kill me since he prefers I work for money.

To all my book loving friends out there that feel like I do, there will be authors and giveaways and goodies in the future on Fang-tastic Books that you are going to love. Make sure to drop by and give the authors proper adoration. :-)

Interview with Linda Wisdom

OK, continuing on with Linda Wisdom Tuesday we have an interview for you all to enjoy.

Are the Hex books your first paranormal books or have you dabbled into the realm before?

I’ve written several paranormal books before in category romance and I felt it proved I needed to continue with my favorite genre. .

A lot of paranormal writers admit they have always had an interest in vampires, witches, ghosts, etc. while some just stumble into the genre with an idea along the way. Which is it for you, have you always been a lover of all things spooky or did inspiration entice you into the web of the otherworld?

Definitely loved anything and everything that goes bump in the night. To me, it’s a genre of infinite possibilities.

In another interview you mentioned you hope to have at least 16 books in the series, is that a definite or just what you have planned to write?

It’s what I have planned since there are 13 witches in the class of 1313 and I had at least three books planned for Jazz.

I also read that there may be TV shows or movies featuring your characters in the future, any definite news on that?

No definite news on that yet, but the producer is out there pitching them.

Do you plan your books in advance or let the characters lead the way?

The characters are very much in charge, even to who goes next. And it seems the stories go the same way because the story has to fit that particular witch.

Where do you get the inspiration for your characters? I know this can be hard question because mostly ideas just pop into a writer's head (thank the muse) but I am curious about some of your "out there" characters like Fluff and Puff, Dweezil and the horrid Foulshadow- any interesting stories behind those characters?

LOL! Mine are definitely out there and more out there coming. Fluff and Puff popped into my head as in I could see Jazz in her Happy Bunny pjs and wearing bunny slippers that talk and have razor sharp teeth. Fluff and Puff are so special to me that they’re tattooed on my ankle and the artist did an awesome job of inking them and their personalities. I have no idea where Dweezil came from but he was very fun to write. He’s so politically incorrect, given to drama and has some odd quirks. Foulshadow is a bit Jabba the Hutt in looks, but with the noxious farts. I wanted something that people would go “euww!” when they read about him, and they did.

Will all the books have Jazz and Nick in them or will they branch out? The third book features one of Jazz's fellow banished witches, Stasi, yet Jazz and Nick are supposed to make appearances, will that be the theme for most of the books? The stories wil focus on one of the other banished witches while Jazz may pop in from time to time?

Not all the books will have Jazz and Nick, but she could show up in a few of the future books and I see a third book for her.

How many books in the series have you written so far? Stasi's book, Wicked by Any Other Name, is the third- how many others are finished or currently in the works?

Four books are written and a few more are drafted along with a few other witches chattering away in my ear.

Do you know when your next book is scheduled to be released? Is there a working title yet?

Hex In High Heels will be out in October and features Blair.

So can you tell the readers a little about your current release, Wicked by Any Other Name?

Stasi is being sued in Wizards Court and now dealing with the plaintiff’s wizard attorney who’s revving her hormones and vice versa. It doesn’t help that red hearts are over both of their heads. Cupid’s way of telling them they’re meant for each other. But the town of Moonstone Lake is also in danger from some very olde magick that’s affecting the humans in the town. While Jazz, Nick and Irma are there to help out, Stasi knows it’s her problem and she has to be the one to fix it before something really bad happens. And look for a Fluff and Puff extra at the end of the book and Horace, a gargoyle with total attitude.

You've had a rather prolific writing career with very little rejection, that's unusual in the writing world. Any secrets or advice to share with struggling writers out there?

Some of my rejections later ended up in sales because I had faith in the story and I wasn’t going to give up on it. You have to have faith in your work, be willing to do what it takes and realize it doesn’t always happen overnight.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the readers?

Just that I hope readers enjoy Stasi’s story as much as they enjoyed Jazz’s and keep demanding more of the series!

Well Linda, thank you so much for taking the time to do an interview with Fang-tastic Books and Paranormal News . I look forward to reading any and all upcoming books in the series. So far all the ones I've read have been a mystical romp on the wild and witchy side of life.

Thank you for joining us at Fang-tastic Books!

~Roxanne Rhoads

Want more Linda visit her at MySpace, read another interview with her at Darque Reviews, and check out this fun snippet about Wicked by Any Other Name where Horace the gargoyle chats with Stasi. You may also find Linda at Witchy Chicks and Wickedly Romantic.

A Review of Hex Appeal by Linda Wisdom

Four Fabulous Fangs for Hex Appeal by Linda Wisdom

Hex Appeal is Linda Wisdom's second book in the Hex series starring sassy and sexy witch Jazz Tremain and so dark and gorgeous vampire boyfriend Nick. All seems well on the surface of Jazz's life until her bunny slippers get accused of eating a were-weasel and she starts having the most awful nightmares.

All hell breaks loose when Jazz closes her eyes, nightmares torment her every sleeping moment, leaving her with feelings both physical and emotional that stay with her long after she wakes up. Things she doesn't want to talk about, not even with Nick.

Jazz can only attribute her bad dreams to too much junk food for so long before admitting something is seriously wrong and it stinks of bad magick. When she finds out those closest to her are also being affected she knows someone has put a target on Jazz and the ones she loves, but who and why? Sure Jazz has made some enemies over the centuries but who would come at her like this? In her dreams?

Life goes on nightmares and all, Jazz has to save Fluff and Puff from a bogus murder rap, drive for Dweezil, and help Nick with his private investigator cases...so much to do on so little sleep. Will Jazz be able to save her precious bunny slippers or will she lose them forever? Will she and Nick find out who is behind the bad dreams before they tear them apart of Jazz finds herself in a nightmare she can't wake up from?

What a great book. I love the complex and entertaining world Wisdom has created with magickal characters and creatures of all calibers-all co-existing with humans- in Southern California. The Hollywood area is the perfect backdrop for Wisdom's magickal world though soon we'll see how life is for Witches outside of Hollywood in her upcoming books.

Wisdom's characters are fun, quirky, dark, dangerous, sexy and so much more. Jazz is such a feisty, sassy witch with fun quirks and Nick...well he does dark and brooding vampire so well. Then there's the annoyingly lovable ghost Irma and the cute and carnivorous bunny slippers Fluff and Puff. What a bunch of fun, out of the box characters. I hear there are more crazy characters on the way in books to come. The unusual and fun unexpected characters sometimes steel the show and make for very fun reading.

Hex Appeal is one book that definitely has appeal. Wickedly entertaining and "hexy" as hell. It is paranormal chick lit at its best. A page turner you won't want to put down.

I am glad I already have book three, Wicked by Any Other Name, in my hands so I can continue with the story. I have already started in a little bit and so far quiet, sweet witch Stasi is so mad she's shooting sparks and hiccuping bubbles. I can tell Wicked is going to be a wild and hilarious read.

A Review of The Kitchen Witch by Annette Blair

Five Fangs for The Kitchen Witch by Annette Blair

Annette Blair is a genius, this is another fang-tabulous read. Laugh out loud fun, some scenes are so funny I was laughing so hard my son asked me what my problem was.

In this book Melody and Logan are the two destined to be together but think they have to stay away from each other because it just isn't "right".

I love how Blair throws children into the mix, adds how they can interrupt things, but not really hamper romance if you are persistent. In The Kitchen Witch Logan Kilgarven is a single dad trying to do what's best for his four year old son Shane. Melody is a high spirited witch and even though she is great with Shane and Shane loves her, Logan can't seem to think of her as mother material (idiot).

This is a wild romp of magic, mayhem and romance, what ifs and total stupidity that mere mortals and wonderful witches both seem to suffer from. Poor Melody thinks she can't handle being responsible and Logan thinks a good mother has to be boring to be stable. Humph. Will they ever figure it out and get together. It sure doesn't look good. These two are so stubborn they might not let the light of clarity ever shine.

What a great blend of magic, romance, and tender love. The scenes with Shane (the four year old) will tug at your heart and the steamier scenes with Shane's sexy dad, Logan, will surely tug at other things.

Annette Blair spins magic tales that are completely engrossing, hip, fun and wickedly hilarious at times. Love them. I can't wait to read the rest of her witch books. I hope they are all as funny.

Vampire Poetry Monday- Drained by Roxanne Rhoads

For all my poetry loving vamp fans out there, I have decided to post some of my vampire poetry once a week in between books reviews and other news. Hope you enjoy.

Drained
Sinewy steel and marble grace
stilettos clicked across cobblestone
She moved in and out of the shadows
She stalked me, my soul on her lips
Surreal passion drenched me in sex swirled thoughts
Desire bubbled and boiled, I couldn’t say no
Her grip was a silk covered vice
Pleasure penetrated my weakness
I tried to fight, I screamed at the blood covered moon
The liquid eclipse only mocked me
I flowed like a fountain into a river
Drained I gave into her embrace
Eternal beauty stopped my heart
As I stared into the lifetime of her eyes

A Review of My Favorite Witch

Five Fangs All the Way for My Favorite Witch

I was right My Favorite Witch by Annette Blair is a fabulously fang-tastic book. I finished it last night and can't wait to get started on the rest of the Witch books by Annette Blair.

The characters are so...magically, full of life, full of hurt and just completely real...then add magic. Makes for a fun and totally sizzling read.

In My Favorite Witch the magical witch is Kira, a spurned young woman who was going to marry a jock, until she found him in bed with her sister. So it's off to a new life, a new job and a new place to live. Then in walks Jason Goddard just as she is casting a spell. Hockey superstar, Best Kisser in America (reality show winner), and her new boss he's enough to make any girl fall at his feet because he is so damn gorgeous. It's amazing that man didn't melt the ice.

Too bad both Kira and Jason have sworn off the opposite sex and all complications that entails. Too bad they can't seem to stay away from each other. However the instant attraction has other problems. Jason's only home for six months until his knee heals and he's back on the ice...and far away from Kira.

Magic brought them together, but will it be enough to hold them together or will it tear them apart?

I loved this book. Sassy, sexy, sensual and totally seductive...I wanted Jason. What girl can resist a wolf with silver eyes?

I also adored Kira's character. I can totally relate. Good thing I don't have a sister but I have had a jack ass ex who thought my friends were fair game. Thank goodness he's so long gone.

My Favorite Witch is a fun love story with a magical twist you're sure to love as well. Now I am off to read The Kitchen Witch also by Annette Blair, then after that the rest of her Witch books.

Update on Dead of Winter by Sean Harris

I received an email from the author of Dead of Winter, Sean Harris. I just love when an author takes the time to connect with reviewers, it's nice.

She gave me an update on the story and stories to come. I am glad there will be more Allysen and her ghostly escapades. Now that I know there are more books to come I won't be like "huh, what about that?"

Kim Harrison does that a lot in her Hollows books but you know there will be more books so eventually it will be cleared up. That's th lure of a good series, give them enough to make a complete story but keep them in the dark enough to make them want to know more, it keeps the fans reading.

Anyway here's the note from Sean:

"Roxanne, I just wanted to drop you a line and say thanks for your review of my book Dead of Winter. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Since you mentioned it in your review, I thought I'd clear things up a bit and say that, yes, I do have plans to make it a series. I, too, hate loose ends and plan to tie them all up. The second book is currently in the works. Thanks once more for the great review! Best wishes, Sean Harris"

Annette Blair Witch Books

I am currently reading Annette Blair's Witch Books. I have both the Accidental Witch Trilogy and the Triplet Witch Trilogy. My mother has already read all of them and loves them, surprising I thought they might be a little too "racy" for her but I think she's getting over all that.

I'm on the first one, which I actually started reading out of order, I thought My Favorite Witch was the first book but the first book is The Kitchen Witch. Doesn't seem to matter too much, they stand alone with different characters so it's all good.

I am loving Blair's style though. Right from the beginning the dialogue is snappy, the content is current and the vibe is fun. My Favorite Witch is full of quick wit, sizzling double entendres , dripping sarcasm, and filled with snarky humor and sexual innuendo. Love it, love it, love it.

I haven't even finished reading the book and I am giving it a fang-tastic review, 5 fangs all the way. If all her books are like this I am really looking forward to them.
