Guest Blog & Giveaway with Lori Devoti

Vampires at Christmas...Why They Go Together.
by Lori Devoti

I'm sure your average non-lover of vampires doesn't think of vampires and Christmas as going together at all. In fact a quick Google search on this topic found a couple of blogs by vampire lovers where the authors didn't seem to get the connection either, but personally, I think vampires make the perfect hero for a Christmas tale, especially if that Christmas tale is a romance.

Christmas is about hope and bringing people together. Vampires are known for a lack of hope and frequently, because of the turn, the people in their lives either revile the vampire for becoming a monster (in their eyes) or the vampire himself avoids the people from his human past (due to shame or fear of harming them).

This makes a vampire at Christmas as poignant as a character can be.

Plus Christmas stories are known for featuring redemption. A Christmas Carol, It's A Wonderful Life and The Grinch...all stories of redemption.

Who needs and, in romances at least, craves redemption more than anyone? Vampires.
So, while others may not see Christmas and vampires as going together, I really can't imagine a better hero for a Christmas tale.

How about you? Which classic Christmas story would you most like to recast the main character as a vampire? I think George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life would be wonderful as a vampire. But I could also think a vampire would make a perfect misfit toy in an adult version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or Doris Walker in A Miracle on 34th Street. Who, after, all is more broken or would make a better skeptic than a vampire?

Lori's Vampire stories:

The Vampire Who Stole Christmas, part of Silhouette Nocturne 2008 Holiday with a Vampire II anthology and HQN 2010 Christmas with a Vampire anthology. http://www.loridevoti.com/paranormal-romance/holiday/

There have been so many versions of scrooge, but I think there is room for a vampire version.

I still prefer books I can hold and trade with friends.

I've read the story "The Vampire Who Stole Christmas." It's inside Holiday with a Vampire II. I had chosen it for the cover and of course the "key" word vampire. Then realized, the stories were great too, lol. In the end, I fell in love with Drystan.

Doris Walker as a vampire--that is a perfect fit! It might be a big improvement for the Grinch to be a vampire. I enjoyed your column. (Email in profile.)

I agree, I think George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life would be fantastic as a vampire. I can't think of any classic Christmas stories to add, but I like your examples.
