Guest Blog & Holiday Giveaway: Poison Kissed by Erica Hayes

Today we have a fabulous holiday giveaway from author Erica Hayes. She's offered to give away a copy of her latest book in the shadowfae chronicles-Poison Kissed.

Being part of this holiday season giveaway got me thinking about what my characters would do for Christmas. What does your everyday shape-shifting gangster or kick-ass banshee do when the holidays come? Do demons even have Christmas? If so, what do they think of it? How do they celebrate?

I guess it's a little different to think of a demon Christmas party. Then again, the holidays are a little different around here, because it's summer. No snow-shovelling or Yule logs (what's a Yule log, anyway?) or mistletoe. It's hot, sometimes stinking hot. Christmas dinner, if you celebrate it, is often an outdoor affair, cooked on the barbecue because it's too hot to run the oven all day inside. We eat barbecued lamb and salad and pavlova, as well as turkey and mince pies. And it's the summer holidays, which means the kids get the whole month off…

Some people go to the beach for Christmas, and eat ice creams and prawns (no, they're not shrimps) and go surfing. And the next day, there's cricket on TV! (Think a baseball game with only two bases, that goes for five days. Once you've gotten your head around that, get back to me J)

It must seem a little topsy-turvy when you're used to a winter holiday season. But we like to pretend. We still have Christmas trees and coloured lights and carols, and tell our kids that Santa wear a fluffy red suit and drives a sleigh pulled by reindeer, when it's ninety-five degrees in the shade and the kids probably haven't ever seen snow.

Which is just as insane, when you think about it, as a demon throwing a Christmas party. But hey, why not? We all have reason to celebrate, no matter our beliefs. No reason why the bad guys should miss out on the fun. So I think my characters probably do what everyone else does at Christmas – they crack a beer (or a nice cold lemonade!) and kick back in the sun, have a slice of pavlova and maybe forget about killing each other, just for a few hours.
