The Girl on the Cover

One of the most important things I want readers to know about The Elementals is how the series should be categorized. In this day and age, where what we see determines how we react, it’s easy to make assumptions. When I first published Book One on Amazon, I noticed something within days. Despite the categories I chose for the novel (Fantasy & Magic and Paranormal), it came up in searches for African American and Urban Fiction. I imagine this is because of the cover and I can see how easy it is to make that mistake.

But the one thing I will continue to express is, while Elemental is about being different, it isn’t about a difference you can see. In the series, each girl is unique. Each family situation, ethnicity, ability and personality is vastly different from the other. But it takes just one thing to make them almost exactly alike.

In order to give you an opportunity to get to know Baltimore (the girl not the face on the cover) she’s answered a few questions.

1.     What is your theme song?

Some days it’s Raise Your Glass. Other days it’s Jar of Hearts.

2.     How would you describe yourself in four words?

Unlucky. Bored. Resilient. Trapped.

3.     Who is your celebrity crush?

Danny, from CSI New York. Don’t ask me why, but I think he’s hot. Bridgett thinks that’s gross.

4.     What’s your favorite book?

Ten Apples on Top. Dad read it to me all the time when I was a kid and it was the first one I read on my own. I used to try to count all the apples on that page after they bump into the apple cart. And I always thought their facial expressions were hilarious.

5.     Have you ever told a lie?

Sometimes I think I’m a walking lie. I lie to myself about how happy I am in Miner. I keep most of my family stuff from my friend and boyfriend. And now that all of this Elemental stuff is out in the open, I’m sure I’ll be lying to a lot more people, for the sake of appearing normal—and keeping certain enemies at bay.

6.     Do you have a best friend? What’s your favorite thing about them?
I have two best friends. One here in Utah and the other lives in New York now. Bridgett makes living in Miner bearable. She’s always been sweet and kind and she gets me. She doesn’t care about my parents’ weirdness. She kind of likes it. Ramon gets me too. We grew up together so my parents’ stuff doesn’t bother him.

7.     Describe the perfect date in four words.

San Francisco. Docks. Chowder. Rain.

Number of pages: 364
Word Count: 71279

Cover Artist: Kelbian Noel

Book Description:

Baltimore Land is a typical teenager whose parents embarrass her completely. She wants nothing to do with her family's beliefs and is convinced their silly rituals only exist to make her life miserable. All she wants is to be normal, but the fact that her parents are witches seriously messes with her social life.

She's doing alright, with a boyfriend who seems to like her just the way she is and an awesome best friend who is fascinated by her lifestyle, but she's not the most popular girl in her small Utah town. In fact, she's kind of the town freak.

When her boyfriend's ex tries to win him back, Baltimore's emotions get the best of her and she soon realizes her parents' beliefs aren't so silly after all--they're just the beginning.

About the Author:

From a very young age, Kelbian loved to read. She found herself engulfed in novels by Janette Oke and L.M. Montgomery, but never seemed to find herself in the pages. At the age of 11 she declared she would write stories that had to do with her own experience, and be the youngest author in history. But life was full of baseball, homework, best friends and boys.

Decades later, having studied writing in college and pursued it as a career, Kelbian decided it was time to get back to her dream. She started writing again, joined a critique group and wrote two novels. Then in March 2011, along came Elemental. This time life's distractions couldn't shake the feeling that the world needed to hear Baltimore's story. At least those who would listen! A year later, Kelbian is excited to introduce Elemental to the world with hopes someone will love the story as much as she does.

Kelbian lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with her two children.
