Discussing Vampires with Author Katie Salidas

What are the origins of vampires?

While the word “vampire” is a relatively new term (circa 1800’s), the idea of bloodsucking undead has been around since the dawn of time. Some legends state that simply being buried improperly can cause a human to reanimate as a vampire, Slavic legends for example. Other legends stat that one must have committed a heinous crime to become the undead. There are other legends about animals jumping over a corpse.

Some popular ideas that have been adapted to fiction, have vampires as the children of Cain or Lilith. Still more involve demonic spirits and possessions. If we seek far back into mythology you’ll find the Greeks and Romans believed in demonic spirits themselves and in many ways they were the prototype of the common vampire of today.

That hooked me! I love ancient mythology and happened across some very interesting similarities between creatures of the ancient Greek world and the vampires I wanted to create.

The Keres, in fact were dead ringers for what I had in mind. Daughters of the Greek Titan Nyx, goddess of the night, these creatures are described as winged female death spirits with an insatiable lust for human blood. Perfect!

According to my research they were also one of the evils released when Pandora opened the fabled box. While they sound fearsome and probably would be, they weren’t exactly evil. They existed in a murky gray area of morality. They were agents of the fates, also known as Death Fates. They did not attack people openly or without reason. They did however; hang around battles waiting for someone to fall. That’s when they swarmed, finishing the poor dying man off, savoring their blood as they sent his soul to Hades. They essentially sped a person’s fate on to its course. If you were going to die, they’d be there to do it and drink your blood at the same time.

I fell in love, not literally of course, with the creature and knew I just had to base my vampire legend off of them somehow.

In the first book, Immortalis Carpe Noctem, Lysander explains to Alyssa the origin of the vampire species. He tells her that the first “vampire” was created by a mating of one of the Keres with a dying man she encountered on the battlefield. The resulting child was immortal, like its mother, and carried the same insatiable bloodlust, but had the features of its father. Being a hybrid and the only one of its kind, Nyx (essentially Grandma) cursed it to the night so that she could keep watch and protect it.

The use of the legend doesn’t stop there however. As the Immortalis series progresses we delve deeper and deeper into the history. In Hunters & Prey, we are reminded of the fact that a human-turn-vampire is not a dead creature, they are “changed” but that change must happen properly. If not done correctly it will create a hideous abomination. In the third book in this series Pandora’s Box (Should be in Print Fall 2011), we’ll delve even deeper into the legends origins and learn more about the first vampire and what became of it.

Needless to say I really do love my vampires and the legends they spawned from and I hope you will too.

The exciting sequel to Immortalis Carpe Noctem.

Becoming a vampire saved Alyssa from death, but the price was high: the loss of everything and everyone attached to her mortal life. She's still learning to cope when a surprise confrontation with Santino Vitale, the Acta Sanctorum's most fearsome hunter, sends her fleeing back to the world she once knew, and Fallon, the friend she's missed more than anything.

Alyssa breaks vampire law by revealing her new, true self to her old friend, a fact which causes strong division in the group that should support her most: her clan. Worse yet, her revelation entangles Fallon in the struggle between vampires and hunters and The Acta Sanctorum is ready to attack again, with a new army of hybrid creations: the Frenzy Soldiers.

If Alyssa hopes to survive and keep her mortal friend safe, she'll have to be willing to make a deal with the enemy, and regain her clan's support. It will take everyone working together in a precarious truce to fight against the Acta Sanctorum's new threat.

Author of the hot new Urban Fantasy series, Immortalis, Katie has always had a desire to entertain. Since, early childhood, she's dreamed up fantastical characters and scribbled them into pages of various journals and notebooks. Taking an interest in vampires at an early age, she devoured every book, featuring those mysterious, blood sucking creatures, in any genre she could find. She claims that, of all the monsters out there, vampires had always been the most interesting.

It was only natural that a love of reading about vampires, and a love of writing, turned into a desire to write her own stories.

Question: In your story it revolves around a Halloween party. Why do you think that Halloween has become so appealing to adults? What is it that makes adults feel like dressing up in costume and be something they are not?

Answer: I’ve always loved Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday of the year. I get a kick out of playing around in the costume shops picking out things, not just for my daughter, but for me as well! I’m thinking pirate this year.

When we were kids, we loved to play dress up, we enjoyed make-believe time, and we allowed ourselves to step out of the real world. We were happier then.

Now that we are adults, bogged down with life and responsibility, we don’t have time for silly things like playing dress-up. We’ve lost some of that youth and spirit.

And that, to me is what makes Halloween so special. For kids, it’s all about the candy. They play dress-up every day. But for us, adults, Halloween is the one holiday of the year where it is almost expected of you to play.

Our costumes may have changed. We might don a full-sized chicken suit or something skimpy like that sexy princess Leia outfit (Note to Self, next year!!), but the bottom line is still the same. In dressing up we reconnect with some of our lost youth. We allow ourselves to play like kids again … even if it is just one night a year.

So… what will you be for Halloween this year?

Win a Copy of Immortalis: Carpe Noctem by Katie Salidas

You cannot deny that vampires are HOT in today’s market. Between Urban Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Erotica, and let’s not forget the super popular YA market, vampires are taking over.

Not that I think that is a bad thing. I’ve been a die-hard vampire lover since I read my first novel, The Vampire Diaries, by LJ Smith. I believe I was about 10 years old at the time (Ooh, I’m dating my self. Strike that from the record).

There was just something about those creatures of the night that struck me. Perhaps it was the mystique, maybe it was the ability to be the ultimate bad boy (let’s face it, you know we deny it but we women do love a bad boy.), maybe it was the power and immortality.

I was hooked, plain and simple.

From that moment on I devoured anything, vampire related, I could find.

Combine that love, with a desire to create and that sparked the idea to write my own stories.

And that brings us back to the recent surge in popularity of vampires.

It’s not enough to just write a vampire story. You have to give a little oomph to it. Like it or not the, “sparkly vampires” that were created in Twilight, show us a perfect example of this concept. Whether or not you like them, Mrs. Meyers did something different. She took an old idea and added a fresh twist. The market is hugely competitive at the moment; so, to stand out, you have to have something to give your audience that they might not get with another story.

We all know the standard vampire themes: Vampires cannot handle sunlight, crosses (or any holy relics for that matter) are a great deterrent, garlic is supposed to be toxic, and a stake through the heart makes a good killing weapon.

When writing my story, I asked myself, why? Why can’t vampires handle the sunlight? Why do holy relics bother them? I wanted to give the reader a real, solid reason behind the answers to these questions. I wanted to make my vampires real enough to step out of the pages.

With all that in mind, I wanted to deliver a story that let you experience, with the main character, the transformation from human to full fledged vampire. While reading, you will learn what it takes to be a vampire; you will experience the gut wrenching feeling of blood lust. You will make your first kill. You will feel the high and experience the guilt. If you can get over that, you will learn to hone your new supernatural abilities. In the end, you might even like being a creature of the night.

In Immortals Carpe Noctem, vampires inhabit a world identical to our own. They follow a few of the standard vampire themes and the ones they don’t follow are explained. They live mostly solitary lifestyles and remain secret because they know the danger in being out in the open.

Don’t get me wrong, my vampires are not weaklings, but let’s face it, when your confined to the indoors during the daylight hours, you do have to be careful who knows what you really are.

Because of their nature and need for fresh, live blood, they generally do not live en masse. Too many dead bodies might be a bit of a giveaway, don’t you think?

Not to mention they are, and have been hunted for centuries, by a secret and very powerful organization called the Acta Sanctorum.

Immortalis follows Alyssa, a fortunate (or unfortunate, you be the judge) girl who was rescued from a brutal mugging, by the least likely of saviors; a two-thousand year old loner named Lysander.

Alyssa awakens as a vampire and is soon devastated by harsh realities of her new way of life: the loss of her friends, her independence, and worst of all, her humanity.

As if that weren’t enough to make life interesting, she finds out her “turning”, did not go unnoticed. The Acta Sanctorum has caught wind of some strange activity in Las Vegas and sent their top hunter, Santino Vitale, to eradicate the problem.

Meanwhile, Lysander’s old mate has learned of Alyssa’s turning as well and has a bit of a jealousy problem. Let me tell you this, hell hath no fury like a vampire mistress scorned.

There is no time to whine about the loss of her mortal life, Alyssa has to come to terms with the changes quickly because there at two separate enemies ready to take her new found immortality away.

To survive as a vampire, one must learn to, Carpe Noctem (Seize the Night).

Now that I’ve given you a taste of my vampires, I’d love to hear some of your thoughts. Tell me what your ideal vampires are like. What powers should they possess? What weapons should defeat them … or not?
