Angie Fox and The Tale of Two Demon Slayers

Hi, my name is Angie Fox and I write the Accidental Demon Slayer series. It’s about a preschool teacher turned demon slayer who has to run off with her grandmother’s gang of geriatric biker witches. It happens every day, right?

The series has been a blast to write and I think I’ve had some of the most fun coming up with demons. Yes, they are scary. Yes, they are out to take over the world. But they have to have their own personalities and problems too.

In The Accidental Demon Slayer, Vald the demon has been imprisoned by my heroine’s ancestor, who was one of the greatest demon slayers. But has he spent his time in the fifth level of hell just moping? No-sir-e-bob. Vald is a bit of a mad scientist. He’s coming up with ways to beat demon slayer technology.

And then there are the sex-on-the-brain succubi in The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers. They’re out to conquer the world, one man at a time. Problem is, no one seems to take sexy creatures seriously. The magical bureaucracy has ignored the succubi problem in Las Vegas. After all, they’ve added a certain “what happens in Vegas…” charm. But demons, left to their own devices, will get out of hand.

Finally, you have the old family friends turned demonic in A Tale of Two Demon Slayers. This one was fun because they figured out how to use my heroine’s magic against her and it really forces her to take a look at her abilities, her powers and just what she’s willing to do to protect the people she loves.

Tell us about the most interesting demon you’ve read about/seen in a movie and you’re entered to win a copy of one of my books (winner’s choice).

Or if you already have the Accidental Demon Slayer series, you can have a Kiss My Asphalt t-shirt like the biker witches wear in the books.

Please include email contact info with your comment.

This contest is open internationally.

Interview with Honoria Ravena

Please join me in welcoming author Honoria Ravena to Fang-tastic Books today.

Thank you for joining us today.

Q; So Honoria, how long have you been a writer? What was your first published work?

A: I've been a writer since I was about twelve, so about eight years. I'm only recently published. My first release was Fear of Darkness, from Red Rose Publishing. My second release was the following day. It's Biohazard, and its out from Breathless Press.

Q: Out of all the stories/books you’ve written, which is your favorite?

A: Probably Of the Night, which isn't out yet, and I don't even have a release date for it. It will be published by Red Rose Publishing. Nyx, the hero, is just a really vivid character for me. And the chemistry between him and Pagan was incredible.

Q: Do you have a favorite character that you’ve created? One that is especially close to your heart?

A: That would have to be either Nyx or Macon, who is the vampire king. They both have very interesting back stories, and overwhelming personalities. I have to be careful. They tend to take over whatever scenes they're in. And it was very hard to find a heroine who didn't complete get trampled my Nyx's personality, but I think I did. It's going to be equally hard to find a woman for Macon.

Q: Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

A: I've tried to work by a schedule, but I can never stick to it, so now I just try to write everyday. I work better at night, so I usually write after dinner.

Q: Do you need to be in a specific place or atmosphere before the words flow? Do you have a ritual that you do before sitting down to write?

A: I always write at my desk. I like sitting upright, instead of sitting in bed. And I got a new computer chair so now I can sit Indian style, which is my favorite way to sit. I do have a ritual. I always drink green tea when I write. I'm a coffee girl, and writing is the only time I'll drink tea. I light incense and/or candles, and I listen to music. Usually female voices like Niyaz of Within Temptation, but lately I've been listening to Mindless Self Indulgence. Archer, the hero of my work in progress, seems to like that band.

Q: What is the strangest source of inspiration you’ve had? Maybe something weird that ended up in one of your books or short stories.

A: Oh gees, its hard to say. I get ideas from everywhere. One sentence can open the flood gates. Most recently I got an idea from my World History class just from hearing about the Vestal Virgins. That idea has basically kicked off my fantasy series.

Q: If you could offer one tidbit of information for new writers, what would it be?

A: Find a good critique group, preferably containing some already published authors and learn the mechanics of writing.

Q: Do you have a “day job” or do you write full time?

A: I'm the Acquisitions Manager of Breathless Press, and I go to college, but I pretty much write fulltime. Lol, well, if you can call it that. I pretty much think I watch TV fulltime and write on the side. I'm trying to fix that.

Q: Name one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you.

A: I wear my socks inside out. I don't know if that's surprising, but its weird. I don't like the fuzzy part on the insides of socks.

Q: Do you have a favorite book or a favorite author?

A: Gah, you want just one? Okay, well right now, if I have to pick one, my favorite author is J.R. Ward. But I love so many others, its hard to say that she's my all time favorite.

Q: Could you tell us about your current work in progress?

A: My current WIP is a vampire novel. Just to get your interest it has vampires (duh), witches, zombies and demons. It's been truly exciting to write, and I'm no where near done.

Q: What are some of your hobbies besides writing?

A: I like to travel, dance, and read of course.

Q: If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would you spend the money on?

A: A trip to Europe.

Q: Which household chore do you abhor and why?

A: Cleaning. My room is a mess. I just cleaned my desk the other day, but it's already a mess.

Q: What’s your favorite comfort food? Your favorite drink?

A: Comfort food...Probably chocolate. Favorite drink is diet wild cherry pepsi.

Q: Do you have a food that you absolutely will not even taste one little tiny bit of?

A: Liver. I never EVER want to try liver. I've smelled it cooking and it makes me nauseous.

Q: What started your love affair with the paranormal?

A: I've always been interested in the paranormal, ever since I can remember. I guess the obsession started when I was seven and watched Buffy for the first time, but I think it was going on before that.

Q: In closing, tell us a bit about your latest release. Feel free to share an excerpt.

A: I actually had two releases in December. I won't share excerpts because that would get insanely long, but I will share blurbs and buy links.

Interview and Giveaway with Author Jude Stephens

Please welcome author Jude Stephens to Fang-tastic Books today for an interview and a great giveaway. Thanks for joining us today, Jude.

Thanks for having me.

So let's get into this interview.

Q; How long have you been a writer? What was your first published work?

A: I’ve written all of my life but have never shared my stories with anyone. I was very nervous to let people see my work. But last year I made a resolution to at least let some family and friends read some stuff. They were very supportive and last year I published my first novel Scent of a Vampire.

Q: Out of all the stories/books you’ve written, which is your favorite?

A: So far I’d have to say the last book I just finished Touch of a Vampire because it’s a story about facing truths and embracing your destiny. All of my stories in the world of the Evolved have a grain of the real world running through them. An underlying theme is about accepting those who are different and finding the common thread that every living being shares.

Q: Do you have a favorite character that you’ve created? One that is especially close to your heart?

A: I have a few favorites but I will have to say Orenda Sherman mainly because her character goes through such amazing transformations from average woman to the possible savior of many species. I think it’s something we can all relate to. Don’t we all go through life transformations as we grow older? Hopefully not in such a drastic way as Orenda does though.

Q: Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

A: I have no set schedule. When I write, it’s because I feel the urge to so do. That urge hardly ever makes an appearance if I’m tired or stressed over something.

Q: Do you need to be in a specific place or atmosphere before the words flow? Do you have a ritual that you do before sitting down to write?

A: When writing, I become immersed in my character’s world and I really need to be left alone. Not necessarily by myself. I can write in a crowded coffee shop as long as no one talks to me. I tend to be very focused. My teenage daughter loves it as this is the perfect time to ask me for money.

Q: What is the strangest source of inspiration you’ve had? Maybe something weird that ended up in one of your books or short stories.

A:I think the whole premise for the world of The Evolved came form a strange source. I was at my local Borders store having a cup of coffee and some kids at the next table left a book lying on the table about bats. The picture on the front was interesting so I picked it up and started reading facts about bats. The story for Scent of a Vampire immediately came to mind. Of course what’s strange is this was a children’s book for ages 7-12. My story is definitely for adults only.

Q: If you could offer one tidbit of information for new writers, what would it be?

A: Write for the love of the story that lives inside of you. Don’t write for any other reason.

Q: Do you have a “day job” or do you write full time?

A: I am lucky to have a day job that I love. I’ve worked in the healthcare industry for the past 15 years. Everyday I get a chance to connect with people in my community and hopefully make a difficult time a little less stressful.

Q: Name one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you.

A: I love to study different cultures and religions. I believe the world is a fascinating place full of wonder and we all have more in common than not.

Q: Do you have a favorite book or a favorite author?

A: From the first day I picked up a Stephen King novel I was enthralled. He opened a world which had been previously forbidden to me. Thus I pay homage with my own pen name of Stephens. Long live the King!

Q: Could you tell us about your current work in progress?

A: Still in its early stages, I am working on a book for the character of Leeds who’s appeared in my previous two Evolved novels. Though his appearance was brief in each novel he made quite an impression with readers. Leeds’ character is based on the legend of the Jersey Devil and in this book we will learn his sad life story and see if he’s destined to live alone as a “devil” in the Jersey pine barrens.

Q:What are some of your hobbies besides writing?

A: I love old movies. I mean the really old movies. Not Jaws and Rocky. I’m talking masterpieces like Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious. I will take David O Selznick’s King Kong to Peter Jackson’s version any day.

Q: If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would you spend the money on?

A: Of course I would love to help family and friends and people in my community. So many people have lost their jobs. A lot of community programs have suffered just when there is a greater need. After that I would love to travel. I dream of seeing some of the things I’ve only read about.

Q: Which household chore do you abhor and why?

A: Cleaning our cat’s litter box because it’s a litter box.

Q: What’s your favorite comfort food? Your favorite drink?

A: Potatoes. Mashed potatoes, French fried potatoes, scalloped potatoes, boiled potatoes….I kind of sound like that guy from Forrest Gump when he talks about shrimp.
My favorite drink is coffee. Black coffee…no cream no sugar no fancy syrup.

Q: Do you have a food that you absolutely will not even taste one little tiny bit of?

A: Shrimp.

Q: In closing, tell us a bit about your latest release. Feel free to share an excerpt.

A: Touch of a Vampire is the story of Orneda Sherman who six months ago was a normal woman, a divorced physical therapist trying to get back into the dating game. A trip to Atlantic City with her best friend altered her life forever. She learned she is part of a world that hides from humanity. They are The Evolved, species that look human but have altered DNA. They are the stuff of legend, vampires, dragons, centaurs and others who have remained hidden among us.

Orenda is a Sensay, a rare evolutionary breed. She has heightened abilities of taste, touch scent, sight and hearing. It has been foretold that she will be the one to unite all of mankind. This prophesy has made her a target for elimination. In order to protect herself, Orenda must learn how to control her powers. To do this she trains with Cheve a handsome Native American who dedicates his life to making sure she fulfills her destiny.

Excerpt:

Alex lifted the man’s arm and rolled his sleeve up baring his wrist. Without ceremony, his fangs slid out and he bit into the man’s wrist. Alex didn’t drink long and when he was done he licked the wound. He rolled the man’s sleeve back down and lifted him into a nearby chair. Alex’s eyes met mine. “Now you know the reality of a vampire’s life. It’s not either all good or all bad. It’s life trying to survive.”

I had to admit it was kind of anticlimactic. I had expected mesmerizing eyes and commanding words and had gotten bite, drink, done instead.

“Will he be okay?” I asked as Alex opened the door and escorted me back outside.

“He’ll be fine. He will wake in about fifteen minutes feeling a little groggy that’s all. I didn’t take much from him.”

When we got back to the cars both Mark and Cheve were waiting. Cheve pushed himself off of the SUV and said “I think it’s best if Alex rides with Mark again. There’s no way of knowing if he gets into the same condition again.”

I began to protest when Alex interrupted “I agree. At the moment I’m fine but I don’t want to test it. I apologize to everyone for the hold up.”

Mark shrugged “Bullet enjoyed taking a walk.”

Alex looked at Mark and nodded. I was surprised at Mark’s show of support for Alex.

I wrapped my arms around Alex. “See you soon handsome.” Alex kissed my forehead and grinned his lopsided grin at me “That’s right. You called me handsome before. You think I’m sexy…don’t you?” He wagged his eyebrows at me and hopped in the car next to Mark.

Monday Musings January 25, 2010

Wow!! Pictures, Images and Photos

So I spent another weekend without Internet access thanks to AT&T. You know having high speed is great- when it's working. At least with dial up it was always there. Now...

And even though I now have Internet again I have no wireless so I can't use my laptop, my teenager is having fits because he can't use his laptop or iTouch... arg. I guess I have to buy a new router.

So onto happier notes, I wrote over the weekend when I wasn't bitching about not having web access and when I wasn't dealing with AT&T tech support- we spoke with I think, six different ones over the weekend.

I didn't get a whole lot of writing done though because I was gathering info and adding up stuff so I can do our taxes.

Yes, I do my own taxes. TurboTax.com is a godsend. I've been using the software for years and highly recommend it. Simple, easy, and it guides you every step of the way. (And no they didn't pay me to say that, I honestly love them and have been using them for 8 or 9 years now).

So this week we have some great stuff going on: an interview and giveaway with author Jude Stephens, an interview with Honoria Ravena, and Angie Fox will be here Friday for a guest blog and some goodies to give away.

Be sure to drop by Roxanne's Realm this week if you like erotica books- I have two big giveaways going on this week- 5 copies of Single Husbands by HoneyB and 2 copies of Sex, Love and Valentines a collection of Valentine erotica from Xcite.

This week three of my stories are up at The Better Sex Erotic Fiction contest so please drop by and vote for your favorite. Thanks.

I think that's all for now, have a great week everyone.

Vampires, Michele Hauf, and Her Upcoming Books

Michele Hauf Q&A (from Michele's latest press release)

Tell us about yourself:

I’ve always told stories in my head, but decided to start writing them down after my son was born (19 years ago).

The first story I wrote was about a rockstar vampire and featured a pissed-off ghost, time-travel, fringy leather rockstar pants (this was the early 90s) and even the kitchen sink. I hadn’t realized I’d written a romance, but after it sold, I went on to write more romance (historical, fantasy, paranormal), and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve been delightfully surprised that others like to read the stories that entertain me!

Why paranormal romance?

I’m not sure why that first book had a vampire in it, but I found him to be incredibly sexy. The immortal bad-boy image works for me. For a story to hold my interest it’s gotta have something not-normal in it. And writing heroes who have lived for centuries allows me to indulge my love for history with their backstories. And the sky is really the limit when it comes to creating characters. Vampires, werewolves, faeries, mermaids, chimeras. What’s not to
love?

Most of your books are set in Minnesota and Paris. What’s up with that?

Well, obviously, I am not writing what I know because I don’t drink blood. But I do like setting stories in places I’m familiar with. I’ve lived in Minnesota all my life, and what better place for a vampire to live? It’s provides six months of dark winter for him to thrive! And the werewolves really do love the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. I got to visit Paris a few years ago. I loved the city, but was a little disappointed it wasn’t the 18th century. No queen parading by in a gilded carriage? Where were the sexy fops in frockcoats? I think I must have existed in Paris sometime during that century. In proof, Versailles felt like home to me. Hmm...

Are all your paranormal books in the same series?

I’ve done a few paranormal series for the Nocturne line: Bewitch The Dark and Wicked Games. The first series focused on witches and vampires; Wicked Games focused on vampires, werewolves and a few other paranormal types. But all my paranormal stories are set in the same world. So my vampires in one book are going to be the same in another book. Same methods of surviving; same methods of destruction. I’m introducing angels in June and yep, still the same world. I like to write each story so it stands alone, and readers won’t feel like they’ve missed something from a previous book.

What’s up with the VampChix blog and Bite Club?

VampChix was started because I love vampires. I wanted a blog that celebrates the vampire by featuring guest authors who write about vampires, also movies, books, and anything else vamp-related. Bite Club was born from that blog. It is an online book club that reads only vampire stories. Each month we select a different title. HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND will be the featured title for April. Anna Dougherty is the Bite Club moderator and she keeps the blog buzzing with posts related to the books and excellent discussion questions. Authors also stop by to chat
when we discuss their book.

What’s next from you?

In April I have HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND, as well as an electronic short story, “The Vampire’s Tango” from Nocturne Bites. Tango features a secondary character from HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND that I hope readers will want to learn more about (and it’s set in Paris; whoda thought?).

May finds me indulging my love for writing action-adventure with THE BONE CONJURER, written under the Alex Archer pseudonym (Gold Eagle).

In June I have ANGEL SLAYER from Nocturne (angels and demons) and “Halo Hunter”, another short electronic story from Nocturne Bites. Watch for more stories from HQN in 2011!

Review of The Accidental Demon Slayer by Angie Fox

.5

Imagine one day you are a boring preschool teacher that maps out a timed route to a restaurant you've been to several times, everything is planned to a T, lists are made, life is planned.

Then on your 3o birthday a crazy geriatric biker lady who claims to be your grandmother shows up and tells you that you are a demon slayer - then all hell breaks loose. Literally. A demon ends up on your toilet trying to kill you.

That's what happens to Lizzie Brown. Not only does she find out she is the chosen demon slayer, her grandma's a biker witch, and now her terrier is talking to her.

One minute Lizzie's ready to go to her 30th birthday party the next minute she's on the back of a Harley with only her dog and what could fit in a backpack- her old life is history.

The Accidental Demon Slayer is a wild ride ride at mach speed on the back of a Harley on a bumpy road full of twists and turns...and I couldn't get enough of it.

This was a super fast read that I couldn't get enough of, I devoured book 1 and now I'm onto book 2 and can't wait to get my hands on book 3.

The roadkill magic totally grossed me out but the rest of the magic and the witches are just hilarious. The descriptive wording is so detailed I could picture these crazy old ladies in their tight pants and (ewww push up bras).

What I liked best was the sexy shape shifting griffin, Dimitri ( go figure). Too bad he started the game with ulterior motives- but hey don't all guys?

In the end he turns out to be a sexy guy that has Lizzie's heart and I can't wait to see how their relationship progresses. If she don't want him I'll take him, though the feathered part might creep me out. I am a fur girl not so much into the feathers, I know a griffin has both but...don't know.

Anyway if you like your paranormal urban fantasy books filled with humor and craziness this series is for you. Fox has filled it with wit and charm that you can't possibly resist.

Where Do Vampires Come From: Guest Blog with Gina Maxwell

For as long as parents have been making up strange explanations to the awkward question “Where do babies come from?” paranormal authors have been conjuring their own interpretations to the question of “Where do vampires come from?”

In my opinion, creating a plausible supernatural world is not an easy task that should be taken lightly. It’s not enough for the author to just say that the impossible simply is. I want to know how and why it is. To create plausible fiction is to suspend one’s disbelief. In other words, make the impossible sound possible.

Today I’d like to share with you a couple of my favorite examples of authors creating extremely unique origins for their vampires. These women didn’t settle for the stereotypical explanations, nor did they go anywhere near them. They did, however, come up with ideas that prompted me to mutter a very ineloquent, “Wow. That’s so cool.”

First up is Lara Adrian. Her Midnight Breed series is an exciting ride of danger and alpha-male eroticism. Her vampires are called Breed and hail from a lineage made up of otherworldly aliens that crash landed on our planet thousands of years ago. They were gigantic, vile beasts that basically devoured humans with the exception of the women who they apparently mated with as well. Most of the women died, but a certain number of women had a unique combination of blood and DNA properties that complimented the aliens’. Those women were able to become pregnant and bear (only) sons, which is how the Breed race began. The women that have that unique trait are each marked with a birthmark in the shape of a tear falling into a crescent moon somewhere on her body. While these women have no idea of the Breed or what their role is within the race as a Breedmate, they find out quickly when one of those luscious men discover the birthmark (usually after lusting after said woman, which then scares the man shitless to think he could get seriously tied down if they go any further). I absolutely love it.

My second example absolutely blew me away when I read it. Lynsay Sands has an amazing series called the Argeneau or Rogue Hunter series. Ms. Sands didn’t like the idea of writing romances between humans and dead people, so she made up this elaborate and original back story for her characters that fits perfectly.

In these books, vampires (who refer to themselves as immortals) are actually just regular people who came from the lost city of Atlantis, before it was “misplaced” (i.e. destroyed and now on the bottom of the ocean never to be seen again). The natives of Atlantis were eons ahead of the rest of the world in everything, especially technology. They had created a special type of nano that, when injected into the body, would cure any sickness or damage. What they didn’t count on was the nanos taking their jobs so seriously, they ceased to age past their late-twenties and even what little damage they incurred from the sun on a daily basis was repaired. Another benefit -- they also get to eat as many chocolate bon-bons as they want and never gain a pound! That’s all they’d have to say to sell me on the life! However, the drawback – the nanos need additional blood to keep working, otherwise, they cease to work and the body rapidly deteriorates. How about that for an original vampire? Genius.

Before I leave you today, I’d like to give you a taste of where my vampires come from. It’s from my recently-finished manuscript for my first ever novel, a Paranormal Romance involving angels and of course, vampires. I knew I wanted my vampires to be different in some way, to have their origin be something very much out of the ordinary. So, without further ado, here is an excerpt from my book that begins to explain the origins of my vampires.

Dom crouched on the narrow ledge of the roof of the old apartment building. He instinctively hid in the shadows, allowing the darkness to cloak his large frame and keep him hidden against the night. The frigid wind whipped around him in fierce patterns as though it were angry he was unaffected by its wrath. The sounds far below combined to create the theme song of the city: the constant sounds of the cars fading in and out as they sped by, horns sounding, dogs barking, and people conversing. They bustled to their destinations, blissfully ignorant of his existence and of those like him. They were just as naive as he had been before that fateful night that had plunged him into this world of everlasting darkness.

It was a little over six years since Dom had his lights punched out that night, mercifully sparing him from a life plagued by the guilt of draining the innocent couple in the alley (and who knows how many countless others) had he been allowed to succumb to his bloodlust.

Damien, a centuries-old vampire, had sensed a fledgling vamp consumed with the torments of turning not far from him that night. Damien was also a Hunter and it was his job to track and kill the soulless vampires that terrorized Mortals in the name of their lord and master, Lysander of the Diabolus Umbra.

For reasons Damien couldn't explain, the self-proclaimed loner and honor-bound warrior decided to save Dom that night instead of delivering the swift justice of his broadsword as he normally would have done. After rendering him unconscious he had taken Dom back to his home and gotten him through the rest of the change under his constant supervision and with physical force when necessary.

The process of turning had been horrific. Not only had Dom been consumed by the fires that licked him from within, but in his brief periods of lucidity he had been terrified of Lysander finding Angelica before he could get to her. He had cursed Damien six ways to Sunday during the change for preventing his hasty and irrational rescue mission.

When at last the internal flames of pain no longer scorched his body and hindered his mind, Dom's new mentor had enlightened him with the history of the Dark Race he now belonged to. A race that, up until a week beforehand, he had believed to be the stuff of myths, legends and overactive Hollywood imaginations.

In a million tries he never would have guessed the truth: that vampires, also called Keepers, had been originally created by God to play the shepherds to the humans' role of sheep.

“Most people know of the tragic story of Cain and Abel, the first sons of Adam and Eve,” Damien had told him. “Cain grew up to be a crop farmer and Abel became a shepherd. The story says that when each of the brothers brought an offering of their labors to God, Abel's blood offering of a fatted lamb was greatly accepted, while Cain's crop offering of wheat was not. Cain became insanely jealous and plotted his younger brother's murder. During an evening walk through the fields, Cain bludgeoned Abel with a large fieldstone and left him for dead. When God saw what had happened he questioned Cain about Abel’s whereabouts, to which he viciously replied, ‘Am I my brother's keeper?’” Damien had paused, taking a drink of the thick, red liquid in his glass before he continued.

“Abel's death at his brother's hands was the first murder in the history of the world. At least it would have been, had that version been entirely accurate.”

“What do you mean it’s not accurate?” Dom had asked.

“In reality Abel was indeed a breath away from death when God appeared to him. He gave Abel a choice. He could take his last breath on Earth and return with Him to the glory of Heaven for all Eternity, or he could take his last breath on Earth as a human and live as an immortal shepherd to help God watch over the human race. Essentially making him ‘his brothers' keeper.’”

I hope you enjoyed this look into the imaginary origins of the vampire as much as I enjoyed writing about it. You can find more excerpts to my book and follow my trials and tribulations as I attempt to get published this year at my blog site www.gina-maxwell.blogspot.com.

I’d especially like to thank Roxanne for this guest spot on her Fang-tastic blog and giving me the opportunity to reach out to her faithful followers. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend. Ciao!

Vampire Appeal with Linda Robertson & A Chance to Win An Autographed Copy of Hallowed Circle

I’ve been pondering this guest blog for a week or so now and throwing around ideas of what to write for it. Being that this blog is called Fang-tastic, of course, I’ve been thinking on vampires—a subject I certainly don’t mind daydreaming about. I’m sure the majority of this blog’s readers share that little guilty pleasure with me.

Reasons for the vampire’s appeal are surely as varied and unique as we individuals who indulgently read all we can about them. So, I’ll share one of my favorite reasons below, but first…here’s an excerpt from the second installment of the Persephone Alcmedi series:

----------------------------------------------------------------

…from HALLOWED CIRCLE:

The vampires strode toward the dais. They were handsome men wearing fashionable clothing that combined I’m-hot-and-I-know-it with I’m-going-clubbing-to-find-a-piece-of-ass-worthy-of-me. Not that design and style could say all that alone, it was inherent in the very fabric of their beings. From their squared shoulders to the self-assurance of their gait—everything about them radiated confidence.

They looked over us witches with what elsewhere would be taken as lascivious intent. One exuded conceit with the lift of his chin and the firm set of his unimpressed mouth. The other made me think of a delighted frat boy who’d just strolled unnoticed into the ladies locker room.

“Eldrenne, Madam Elders,” said the unimpressed one. His voice was deep. Tall and muscular, he had the disproportionate chiseled features of a comic book hero. Even his blond hair, trimmed business short on the sides, was styled so that three perfect tendrils of the longer top fell forward in a trademark-rugged way. He did not bow his head, but rather turned it sideways a fraction while cocking his head. It might be construed as a slight bow, but vampires were not ones to show obeisance to any mortal. “I am Heldridge and am pleased to participate in your Eximium.” He signaled the other vampire.

“I’m Sever.” He flashed them each a flirty smile, but didn’t bother to offer them any pretty words that probably weren’t true.

Sever had golden brown curls that hung past his shoulders.

“Welcome,” Desdemona said to them. To us contestants, she said, “The test will entail the—”

The other Elders all reacted to her sudden stop, sitting straighter as their notice drifted beyond the line I and the other contestants had formed before the dais.

A trembling resonance began low on my spine then fluttered upward like fingernails scraping over each vertebra. The fine vibration slid around each rib only to rejoin in my sternum where heat began to build between my breasts. My mind flashed on images of the darkened living room, of Johnny’s face before me while our bodies were entwined. My nipples hardened.

I blinked hard, willing the images to stop, willing this reaction to stop, but the heat dropped down, gliding under my skin to my navel and lower, between my legs. A rush of desire swept through my body—

The southern doors burst open behind me. Without looking, I knew who was there.

“Ladies—and my fellow vampires—please permit me to interpose myself.” As the contestants around me turned, I did, too, and saw Menessos come striding in, projecting his innate patrician polish. “My presence may not have been solicited, but I trust it is not unwelcome.” His walnut-colored waves brushed his shoulders as he moved. The thin beard, trimmed to balance his square jaw perfected his image as a manifestation of Arthur Pendragon, the warrior from centuries past and from my dreams. However, the elegantly cut modern suit that draped from his strong, broad shoulders and the white shirt—sans tie and fashionably unbuttoned—branded him as a New Age warrior, Lord Executive of the Boardroom. In my eyes he was a time-transcending champion, cunning and adaptable, trained to win at any cost. A man to be wary of.

----------------------------------------------------------------

So what is it about vampires? I’d like to offer you my take on one tiny little piece of that enormous puzzle that is vampires. Let’s go back to a line from near the top of that excerpt.

“… everything about them radiated confidence.”

If you’re a writer, you’ve probably been to the mall and spent some time sitting on one of the centrally located benches just watching people. It’s easy to combine a person’s looks with the way they move, act, and sound and thereby come up with an imaginary personality. Mall-walkers aren’t quite like the businessman at the jewelers during his lunch, or the weary-eyed mom with toddlers at the kiddie play area hoping the little ones get tired enough to nap so she can get a nap.

But even if you’re not a people-watcher, if I say, “Confidence has a look,” you know what I mean. It’s in a person’s posture, the set of their eyes, tone of their voice, body language and the fluidity of their gait. Who do you find yourself imagining? Someone famous, gorgeous, and wealthy perhaps? Maybe an actor or actress?

I imagine it would take a lot of confidence to stand in front of the cameras and risk the criticism of the media as much as actors do, although vanity could certainly be a motivating factor. That sounds like a vampire to me.

Then there’s the part about walking the night forever youthful. The young are known for being cocky. They don’t have joints that creak and crack when climbing the stairs so they don’t know what aging feels like. A vampire may never have lost that cockiness. Or maybe they did, but got it back.

Aside from providing time to acquire wealth (a flavor of confidence all of its own), immortality also implies the defeat of death itself. No wonder vampires often have boosted egos. (Let’s not tarnish this happy little discussion with the evil underpinnings, the implied spiritual ramifications for the soul, or the nasty nuances of day-time lifelessness and rot. This little blog piece isn’t about the negative impacts of the vampire’s existence.)

Not to say that vampires who lack confidence can’t be interesting and fun all the same, but the magnetism of the charismatic vampire is—to me—very appealing and those particular qualities are built from the bedrock of self-confidence.

And on that note…

How about that contest now?

Monday Musings January 18, 2010

Wow, I'm exhausted. It's been a busy weekend. I worked on both my novels a little bit, though I feel like I stared at the screen more than I actually typed so I ended up steering clear of the computer for awhile and made a big mess in my kitchen with an art/craft project I've had tickling the back of my mind for awhile.

Too bad it didn't exactly turn out how I envisioned it would. That's OK at least I have a prototype and an idea of where I went wrong and what I need to do to make it turn out right next time.

Since the craft project didn't turn out so good I found other things to keep me busy, like cleaning and cooking. I made cabbage soup, coleslaw, lemon pepper chicken, and chopped up a ton of fresh veggies so I'll have ready to go healthy snacks for the next couple days. Plus I went through a bunch of cookbooks trying to plan out new meals that my whole family may enjoy (which is harder than it sounds, believe me- 3 picky kids and a picky husband...)

I know sounds like I was avoiding writing-actually I was clearing my head and working out the frustration. I've been forcing it lately and getting nowhere. Add restlessness into that equation and I was on a fast track to sucky writing.

So now I can start out today with a whole new outlook and some great ideas. It is amazing how the ideas and inspiration can flow once I remove the pressure of sitting in front of the computer.

After I cooked and cleaned I settled in for some relaxation time with hubby...and the DVR. We had an Angel marathon again watching episodes the DVR has recorded all week, with a few Buffy's thrown in here and there. We also watched another episode of Demons on BBC America. Still not impressed. They need to bring back Being Human, now that was a good paranormal show.

We have a pretty busy week here at Fang-tastic Books. Keta Diablo will be here tomorrow discussing vampire movies and giving away an e copy of her newest book. Thursday Linda Robertson will be here, and Friday I have a great Free Book Friday sponsored by Caridad Pineiro.

The 500 Follower Prize Pack is building. So far I have a Fang-tastic Books tote bag, T-shirt, and magnet along with lots of bookmarks and promo materials from other authors, a set of Blood Ties Season 2 DVDs along with a copy of the book Blood Price. And the pack will continue to grow as the numbers get larger. We're a little over half way there so spread the word, once we hit 500 Followers, one lucky follower will be randomly chosen from the list.

If I Had One Wish, I’d Be a Witch

Photo Credit under Flickr Creative Commons- Pin up witch postcard by foxtongue
When I was little I wanted to grow up and be a witch. I was so sure that when I turned thirteen I would come into my powers (I read that in a book) and I was so disappointed when my thirteenth birthday came and went and no powers came my way. I kept hoping that maybe I was just going to be a late bloomer but no such luck.

See I really loved the show Bewitched and the books…I devoured anything and everything that had anything supernatural in it. Even if it just hinted at being supernatural, like the old Gothic romances that would lead you into scary situations that always ended up having a human element. Didn’t care, I loved the spooky story.

My own scary ending though, well, to this day I can’t really say that I’ve come into my powers. Now if you ask my husband he’d probably say something totally different. He would comment on my seemingly unnatural scent capabilities or my acute hearing (I chalk that up to supersonic mommy hearing, we have to be able to hear our babies wherever they are, the scent thing maybe I’m part bloodhound). Or he might even mention how I always seem to know things, things I shouldn’t know like when he’s planning a surprise for me or what gift he’s buying. Honestly there’s nothing supernatural there either he just really sucks at keeping a secret. LOL.

Even if those are my super powers or my witch capabilities I personally was hoping for something a little flashier. Like being able to twitch my nose and the house is clean or wave my hand and dinner is ready. Now those are powers that would come in handy to a super busy mom of three who also happens to be a writer and would much rather be writing than cooking or cleaning.

Anyway there’s that old saying about “those who can’t, teach”. In my case it’s “those who aren’t, write about those who are.” J So most of my stories are of the supernatural persuasion-ghosts, werewolves, demons, and most of all vampires and…witches.

A Review of Real Vampires Have Curves by Gerry Bartlett

.5

Imagine being offered the choice to become a vampire...today - remember you'll be stuck forever with the body you have right now.

Would you say yes?

Five years ago I would have. Today...uhm "can I work out for a few months first?" would be my answer (damn third baby fat has never left).

Vampire Gloriana St. Clair didn't say no and now has to deal with a very curvy body for eternity.
I have read rave reviews about Gerry Bartlett's funny vampire series all over the place so I finally caved and got the first book.

I do not regret it at all. It was hilarious. What a wild read.

Poor Gloriana laments about her excess curves and lack of vampire abilities and her on again off again relationship with hot Highland lover and vampire sire Jeremiah Campbell III, aka Jeremy Blade, aka Jerry (which he hates). Most people just call him Blade.

The book opens with Glory moving to Austin,Texas in her old beater of a vehicle with her trusty talking dog, who is more than just a dog, Valdez. Along the ride Blade meets up with Glory to let her know a vampire hunter is on the loose and has killed Blade's best friend, Mac. Now Blade wants Glory to come back and live with him so he can protect her.

Glory, refuses. She wants to be independent and make her own way in the world. She already has plans of opening a vintage store in Austin, Vintage Vamp's Emporium. Perfect, because who knows more about antiques and their authenticity that a vampire that has been around for centuries. Plus all her vamp friends can contribute by cleaning out their closets.

Poor Glory is surrounded by powerful vampires...and even a werekitty, that can read her mind because she thinks she can't block or isn't powerful enough to do all the vamp tricks they can all do and boy is Glory's mind a fun spot to stay and play in, her thoughts are sometimes hilarious. But she has to get serious when she realizes the hunter is after her and all her friends. It's time Glory took being a vampire seriously and learned some of the tricks of the trade...if only to save her own well cushioned hide.

This was a very fun read, a humorous look at the lighter side of being a vampire while still tossing in the dark and deadlies. Being immortal isn't always all it's cracked up to be.

Now I can't wait to sink my fangs into the rest of this series.
